You can hide the arrow overlay on Windows shortcut icons, but the reviewed guidance identifies no built-in Windows setting that removes only the arrows. The commonly described methods change a registry setting, either directly or through a utility such as Winaero Tweaker. Hiding all desktop icons is a separate built-in option and does not keep the icons visible.
Can Windows remove only the shortcut arrows?
Microsoft’s desktop-icon guidance documents ways to customize or hide desktop icons, but not a control for removing just shortcut arrows. Its “Show desktop icons” option hides or shows the desktop icons together; it is not an arrow-only fix.
A Microsoft Q&A answer from an Independent Advisor says removing the overlay requires changing the registry so the shortcut overlay points to a blank image. The answer also describes Winaero Tweaker as a utility that makes the registry change in the background. That is community guidance, not an official Microsoft product instruction, and using a utility does not make the change registry-free. Read the Microsoft Q&A response.
Choose a method carefully

There is no verified head-to-head test showing that manual editing or a utility is more reliable across Windows builds. Prefer the approach whose exact change you can inspect, back up, and reverse—and for which current instructions specifically cover your build.

Why build and patch level matter
Reports about Windows 11 24H2 conflict. A Microsoft Community Hub discussion includes a March 2025 registry recipe and a January 2026 user report that a patch stopped previously shared methods from working. Those posts are anecdotal: they do not prove that every method fails, or works, on every 24H2 installation. Check recent, version-specific guidance rather than relying on a copied registry value or icon resource as a universal fix. See the Community Hub discussion.
The same caution applies to older Windows 11 reports. A Microsoft Q&A asker described Windows 11 Pro 23H2, build 22631.3447, but that version context is not evidence that a particular change succeeds on every PC running that build.

Back up the change and plan how to undo it
Before editing the registry—or using a tool that edits it—back up the relevant registry state and note the exact key and value changed. Do not remove a registry value just because its name looks familiar: first verify that it is the custom value created by the arrow-removal change.
A September 2025 Community Hub reply suggests that, in some cases, a custom value named 29 under Shell Icons may point to an empty icon; removing that custom value may restore the default overlay. This is community-supplied guidance, not an official or universally validated repair. Confirm that the value is the one you added and consult instructions for your exact setup before changing it. A separate reply offers a batch file that also changes IsShortcut values in other registry locations. Do not treat that broader script as interchangeable with undoing a single overlay change; the reviewed guidance does not independently validate it.
Is PowerToys an alternative?
The PowerToys issue cited in the reviewed material is a closed feature request asking for a shortcut-overlay remover. A feature request does not establish that the feature shipped, so it is not evidence of a supported PowerToys option. View PowerToys issue #137.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 continues to work, but Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided. This is separate from the shortcut-arrow setting; see Microsoft’s Windows desktop-icon guidance.
