To reduce website image size for free, resize each image to the largest dimensions it will actually display, compress it with a codec suited to its content, then check both visual quality and transferred bytes. Use Google PageSpeed Insights to find oversized assets, Squoosh for local one-at-a-time optimization, and ImageMagick for repeatable batch work. After publishing, retest the page and confirm that browsers request the new, appropriately sized files.

What “image size” means for a website

Image size can mean pixel dimensions or file weight. Both affect page delivery. A 3,000-pixel-wide photo shown in a 700-pixel slot may contain far more image data than the page needs; resizing it can reduce bytes before you adjust compression. Then compression reduces the data needed to represent those pixels.

Google says images can account for 60%–65% of page bytes on most pages, and reports that WebP images are about 30% smaller than comparable JPEG and PNG images at equivalent visual quality. These are broad figures, not guarantees for a particular image: results depend on its content, dimensions, settings, and existing optimization. Google’s WebP documentation explains the format and its compression characteristics.

Find which images are costing the most

  1. Open Google PageSpeed Insights and enter the page URL.
  2. Review the image-related opportunities and note the reported image URLs.
  3. For each candidate, record its intrinsic pixel dimensions, transferred bytes, and rendered dimensions. The rendered dimensions tell you how large it appears in the layout; intrinsic dimensions tell you what the browser may have downloaded.
  4. Prioritize images that are much larger in pixels than their rendered slot, or that have high transfer size without a visible need for that detail.

Do not assume every suggested conversion will save space. Google cautions that a transformation can make an already optimized image larger. Compare the resulting file against the original before replacing it. Google’s image guidance covers appropriately sized assets and image delivery.

Resize to the real display size

Choose the largest width and height at which the image is genuinely displayed, including the largest responsive layout or high-density display you intend to support. Avoid a single oversized desktop asset when mobile uses a materially smaller slot. For different layouts or screen densities, create responsive candidates and let the browser select one with srcset and, when necessary, <picture>.

Keep the image’s aspect ratio unless the design deliberately calls for cropping. For a card that crops images, create a crop that matches the card rather than shrinking a full uncropped photograph and expecting CSS to solve all wasted data. Preserve the original source file outside the delivery pipeline so you can export a different size or quality later without repeatedly compressing a compressed derivative.

Choose a format and compression approach

Lossy encoding discards some image information to reduce file size; lossless encoding preserves the source image data while often compressing it more efficiently than an uncompressed or poorly optimized file. The right choice depends on what viewers need to see.

Image type Good starting point What to inspect
Photographs Try lossy JPEG, WebP, or AVIF. Look for texture loss, banding, blockiness, and color smearing. Reduce quality only until defects become visible, then move back to a better setting.
Logos, diagrams, screenshots, and text-heavy graphics Try lossless WebP or PNG, or a higher-quality lossy setting. Inspect fine lines, small text, icons, and sharp edges; artifacts are conspicuous around high-contrast boundaries.
Images with transparency Use an alpha-capable format such as PNG or WebP. Check transparent areas, edge halos, and the appearance against the actual page background.

WebP is an option for many JPEG, PNG, and GIF use cases, and supports transparency. AVIF is another modern format with strong compression characteristics. Format support and delivery needs vary by browser audience and site stack, so use a fallback when you need broader compatibility. Google Search documentation lists JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG, and AVIF as supported image formats; that does not mean every CMS or workflow handles them identically. See Google Search’s image format guidance and web.dev’s image delivery guidance.

Lossy formats can introduce chroma-subsampling artifacts, including colored fringes near high-contrast text. Always compare the encoded result against the original at normal display size—not just zoomed in—and check it at the actual size and background where visitors will see it.

  1. Open the Squoosh app and load the source image.
  2. Enable the resize option if the dimensions exceed the largest real display size. Set the target width and preserve the aspect ratio.
  3. Select an encoder appropriate to the image: test lossy JPEG, WebP, or AVIF for a photograph; test lossless WebP or PNG, or higher lossy quality, for text and sharp graphics.
  4. Adjust quality while using the comparison view. Look for artifacts in fine text, edges, gradients, and transparent boundaries.
  5. Check the output dimensions and estimated file size against the original. Download only after confirming that the appearance is acceptable and the file is smaller.
  6. Replace the site’s delivered asset or add the optimized file to your build/CMS workflow. Preserve the original separately.

Squoosh is especially convenient for interactive work on individual files. It is not a substitute for a repeatable image pipeline when a site has a large library or needs automatic generation of responsive variants.

Serve responsive files and verify the deployment

After exporting, update the asset URL your CMS, HTML, or build pipeline serves. For modern-format delivery with a fallback, use <picture>; for multiple sizes, provide srcset and an accurate sizes value. Example:

</picture>

Replace the example paths and dimensions with files and layout values from your site. Include accurate intrinsic width and height attributes to reserve space in the layout. The sizes value should describe the rendered slot; an inaccurate value can lead the browser to pick a larger candidate than needed.

  1. Deploy the changes and revisit the page in PageSpeed Insights.
  2. In browser developer tools, inspect the Network panel and confirm the new file is requested, not an old cached URL or unexpectedly large fallback.
  3. Check transfer bytes and pixel dimensions, and verify the image at mobile and desktop display sizes.
  4. Compare both bytes and appearance to the original. Keep the smaller file only if it still meets the visual requirement.

Batch processing with ImageMagick

For repeated local work, ImageMagick can make resizing and encoding part of a script. Google’s PageSpeed documentation gives this example route:

convert input.jpg -sampling-factor 4:2:0 -strip -quality 85 -interlace JPEG -colorspace RGB -resize 1200x output.jpg

The example resizes to a maximum width of 1,200 pixels while preserving aspect ratio, strips metadata, applies quality 85, and sets JPEG sampling and color options. Treat those values as starting parameters, not universal optimal settings: adapt the dimensions to the rendered slot and compare the output visually and by bytes before replacing anything. This JPEG command is not appropriate for every transparency, text, or graphics requirement. Run it on copies or into a separate output directory so the original remains available.

Troubleshooting image optimization

  • The new file is larger. The source may already be optimized, or the encoder settings may not suit the image. Compare bytes, try resizing first, and test a different codec or quality setting before deploying.
  • Text or edges look smeared. Lossy compression may be too aggressive or chroma subsampling may be affecting high-contrast detail. Raise quality or use a lossless option for that asset.
  • Transparent areas turn opaque or show halos. Confirm that the output format retains alpha and inspect against the page’s real background. PNG or WebP can preserve transparency.
  • The page still downloads the old or oversized image. Check the Network panel for the actual requested URL and responsive candidate. Verify deployed markup, srcset, sizes, CMS cache, and any CDN cache.
  • Mobile still receives a desktop-sized file. Provide a smaller responsive candidate and check that the sizes attribute reflects the actual slot at mobile widths.
  • The image looks soft on a high-density display. The chosen maximum dimensions may be too small for the largest intended rendering density. Increase the responsive candidate dimensions enough for that use, then compare the added bytes against the visible improvement.
  • Repeated optimization degrades quality. Avoid re-encoding an already compressed derivative. Export from the preserved original, then compare the new result.

Free checklist before replacing image files

  • Confirm the largest real rendered dimensions and create responsive variants where layout needs them.
  • Choose lossy compression for photographic content when acceptable; protect text, edges, and transparency with suitable settings or formats.
  • Compare output appearance and byte size against the source.
  • Keep the original source and avoid repeated lossy recompression.
  • Deploy correct responsive markup, retest the page, and verify the actual requested asset in the Network panel.
