PhantomJS’s page-load callback tells you when document loading has finished; it does not guarantee that React has fetched data or updated the UI your test needs. Check the load status first, then poll an application-owned flag or a specific DOM condition until it is true—or fail with a timeout and useful diagnostics.

Choose a signal that matches what the test needs

There is no universal React “finished rendering” event for a PhantomJS script to wait on. Define readiness in terms of the result your test needs: for example, a particular heading is present, a loading indicator has disappeared and expected content is visible, or a test-only flag has been set after the relevant data and component subtree are ready.

Milestone PhantomJS signal What it establishes
Set up an early hook page.onInitialized Runs after the page object is created and before a URL is loaded. It is useful for installing listeners, not for declaring the app ready. PhantomJS onInitialized
Document parsed DOMContentLoaded Indicates a document parsing milestone; it does not establish that asynchronous app work or later React updates are complete. PhantomJS onInitialized example and React Suspense
Page loading finished page.open callback or page.onLoadFinished Reports the loading result, not React-specific readiness. PhantomJS onLoadFinished
Required UI is ready Poll an app-owned flag or DOM condition Can represent the state your test actually needs, provided the condition is deliberately defined.
Server-generated async HTML Use a supported streaming or prerendering server API Changes what server-rendered HTML can be sent; client hydration or later updates may still need to be observed. React server APIs

Set an explicit application readiness contract

Prefer a test-only flag when the app controls the page

If you can change the app or its test build, expose a stable flag such as window.__APP_READY__. Set it only after the exact data and UI needed by the test are available. A flag set when a request merely starts—or when the root component first mounts—may be too early. Keep the flag test-only if it is not intended as part of the production interface.

// In the application or test-only integration code:
window.__APP_READY__ = false;

// Set this after the data and target UI state are actually ready:
window.__APP_READY__ = true;

Make the flag’s meaning specific. If one view has several independent regions, a single global boolean may be misleading; expose a condition for the region under test or use a DOM marker on the target element.

Use a DOM condition when you cannot add a flag

For an app you do not control, poll a public, user-visible condition. For example, wait until #results contains the expected item and [data-testid="loading"] is absent. A loading indicator disappearing by itself is weak evidence: an error state could also remove it. Pair disappearance with the expected content or an explicit error marker.

Avoid inspecting React’s private internal properties. Those are implementation details, not a stable readiness API, and may change between React versions.

Wait after the page-load callback with a finite timeout

The example below uses PhantomJS’s documented page.open, page.evaluate and setInterval APIs. Replace the URL and readiness expression with your own. The page load must succeed before the script begins polling; a missing element after a failed load is not evidence that React is simply slow.

var webpage = require('webpage');
var page = webpage.create();
var system = require('system');

var url = system.args[1] || 'https://example.com/app';
var timeoutMs = 15000;
var pollEveryMs = 100;
var startedAt;
var timer;

page.onConsoleMessage = function (message) {
  console.log('PAGE: ' + message);
};

page.onError = function (message, trace) {
  console.log('PAGE ERROR: ' + message);
  trace.forEach(function (item) {
    console.log('  ' + item.file + ':' + item.line);
  });
};

page.open(url, function (status) {
  if (status !== 'success') {
    console.log('FAIL: page.open status was ' + status + ' for ' + url);
    phantom.exit(1);
    return;
  }

  startedAt = Date.now();
  timer = setInterval(function () {
    var state = page.evaluate(function () {
      // Example app contract; use a DOM condition if your app has no flag.
      var ready = window.__APP_READY__ === true;
      var title = document.querySelector('#results h1');
      var loading = document.querySelector('[data-testid="loading"]');
      return {
        ready: ready,
        title: title ? title.textContent : null,
        loadingVisible: !!loading
      };
    });

    if (state.ready) {
      clearInterval(timer);
      console.log('READY: ' + JSON.stringify(state));
      // Run assertions or capture the page here.
      phantom.exit(0);
      return;
    }

    if (Date.now() - startedAt >= timeoutMs) {
      clearInterval(timer);
      console.log('TIMEOUT after ' + timeoutMs + 'ms; last state: ' + JSON.stringify(state));
      phantom.exit(1);
    }
  }, pollEveryMs);
});

To use the DOM instead of a flag, change the in-page expression to a condition that represents your test’s target state. For example: var ready = !!document.querySelector('#results .result-item') && !document.querySelector('[data-testid="loading"]');. Make sure the selector matches the page you are testing and that the element means the content is usable, not merely that an empty container exists.

Install early listeners before navigation

If you need to observe a browser event such as DOMContentLoaded, register the listener through page.onInitialized, before calling page.open. The PhantomJS documentation demonstrates this timing for early event setup. An event listener can help diagnose or sequence document milestones, but it does not replace the application-level readiness check.

page.onInitialized = function () {
  page.evaluate(function () {
    document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', function () {
      console.log('DOMContentLoaded fired');
    });
  });
};

page.open(url, function (status) {
  // Check status, then wait for the application-specific condition.
});

Understand React loading behavior before choosing the condition

Suspense fallback is not a universal loading signal

A React Suspense boundary can show its fallback while its children are waiting for work that activates that boundary; when the work is ready, React can replace the fallback with the content. But not every data-loading pattern activates Suspense. React documents that fetching in an Effect, for example, does not activate a Suspense boundary. Therefore, neither the presence nor disappearance of a fallback alone proves the target UI is ready in every app. Observe the actual content or a readiness contract that covers the app’s loading path. See React Suspense documentation.

Server rendering and hydration are separate milestones

renderToString returns an HTML string immediately; it does not wait for data, and a component that suspends produces its fallback in that output. React documents streaming options for supported Node.js and Web Streams environments, along with prerendering APIs where supported. Server output can make some HTML available sooner, but if the test depends on client hydration or a later state update, it still needs a client-side readiness condition. See React server APIs and React client APIs.

State the React API version your example assumes

Legacy PhantomJS tutorials may show older React DOM APIs. React’s current DOM reference says render and hydrate were removed in React 19 and points to createRoot and hydrateRoot. That does not change PhantomJS’s page-load callback semantics, but it matters when adapting old app examples. Check the API used by the application version you are testing: React DOM reference.

Use PhantomJS settings to diagnose loading problems

PhantomJS’s javascriptEnabled setting defaults to true. Its resourceTimeout setting limits how long resource requests continue before they are stopped and the timeout callback is triggered. The settings documentation notes that these settings apply during the initial page.open call. A resource timeout diagnoses a request problem; it does not tell you whether React rendered. See PhantomJS settings.

page.settings.javascriptEnabled = true;
page.settings.resourceTimeout = 20000;
page.onResourceTimeout = function (request) {
  console.log('RESOURCE TIMEOUT: ' + request.url);
};

page.open(url, function (status) {
  // Continue only if status is success, then poll app readiness.
});

Set these options before the initial navigation. Increasing a resource timeout may help a legitimately slow dependency finish, but it cannot fix an unreachable resource or a readiness condition that never becomes true. Keep the separate application wait bounded as well.

Troubleshoot missing or late React content

page.open returns fail

Handle this as a page or network loading failure before diagnosing React. Log the status and URL, and inspect resource timeout and page error callbacks. Do not proceed to assertions against a page that did not load successfully. PhantomJS documents the callback status as success when no network errors occurred and fail otherwise; the load-finished handler documentation describes the event.

The readiness wait times out

Record the last readiness value, page status, relevant visible text, and loading or error markers. Then check whether the app’s ready flag is ever set, whether the DOM selector is correct, and whether the required content is blocked by an application error. A timeout should fail the run with these diagnostics, not silently continue with incomplete content.

A resource timeout occurs

Use page.onResourceTimeout to identify the request and URL, then check whether the resource is required for the target UI. The resource timeout is about request handling; it is not a React render-complete event. Adjust resourceTimeout only when the request may reasonably take longer and the test’s total time budget allows it.

The page shows a fallback but never the expected content

Confirm which mechanism loads the missing work. A Suspense boundary covers only work that activates it; fetching in an Effect does not activate it. Check for an error state and ensure the readiness condition waits for the expected final content rather than just the fallback changing.

Why a fixed sleep is a poor readiness contract

A delay such as setTimeout(..., 5000) can be useful as a quick diagnostic: if content appears after a pause, the page likely does work after initial navigation. It is not a robust test condition. A slower run can outlast the delay, while a faster run wastes the remaining wait. Polling a semantic condition with a finite deadline makes the test state what it requires and makes a genuinely stuck page fail distinctly from a slow but successful one.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a page rather than maintain a PhantomJS readiness script, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture flow accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Frequently Asked Questions

Does PhantomJS’s page-load callback wait for React data fetching to finish?

No. It reports page loading status, not completion of application-specific data work or later UI state updates.

Can I wait for a Suspense fallback to disappear?

Only if that boundary and fallback accurately represent the work your test needs. Suspense does not cover every loading pattern, including fetching in an Effect.

Can PhantomJS tell me whether a resource timeout means React failed to render?

No. A resource timeout concerns a request; inspect the request and separately evaluate the app’s readiness condition.
