An image-rendering API may expect a hosted template ID, an uploaded file, base64-encoded template content, or a portable template-definition file. Identify that model first, then send the provider’s exact variable names, authentication, output settings, and request format.
This guide shows how to choose the right workflow, reuse templates safely, handle synchronous and asynchronous rendering, validate responses, and troubleshoot failures. The examples describe documented patterns from cloudlayer, Carbone, html2img, Templated, and the ima2-gen project; their field names are not interchangeable.
What “import a template” can mean
Before writing code, decide which of these operations you actually need:

These are different workflows. A template ID is not a file upload, and a portable node file is not automatically accepted by a rendering endpoint.

Step 1: Read the provider’s template contract
Find the provider’s template, render, authentication, and output-format documentation before constructing a request. Record the following values:
- The endpoint and HTTP method for upload, import, or render.
- Whether the template is identified by an ID, slug, version ID, file field, or inline content.
- The exact variable, layer, slot, or data-object names exposed by the design.
- Authentication requirements, such as an API-key header or bearer token.
- The required content type: JSON, multipart/form-data, or another format.
- Whether the result is image bytes, a JSON object containing a URL, or an asynchronous job.
- Supported output formats, dimensions, quality controls, and page or frame options.
For example, cloudlayer documents predefined template IDs and custom HTML templates. Its request can contain base64 template content or a predefined ID in JSON, or a template file in multipart/form-data. html2img documents POST /api/v1/templates/{slug} with input values in a JSON body. Templated uses a template ID and optional layer changes. These schemas cannot be substituted for one another.
Choose stored reuse or an inline render
Use a stored template ID for repeated renders
When the same design is rendered for many records, upload it once if the provider supports persistence. Carbone documents a flow that uploads a template with POST /template, receives a templateId, and sends that identifier on later render requests. It also documents version identifiers, so your deployment should decide whether a render uses the current version or a pinned version.
Store the returned ID and version in your application configuration, not in user-submitted data. When a design changes, create or select the intended version deliberately; otherwise a background job may produce mixed layouts during a rollout.

Carbone documents a base64 template string in a single render request, without storing the template. cloudlayer documents the same general choice: inline base64 JSON or a direct multipart upload. Inline content reduces lifecycle management, but increases request size and makes it harder to audit or reuse a design. Check the provider’s maximum request size and encoding rules.

Build the provider-specific request
Do not copy a generic snippet and merely rename a URL. Build the request from the selected provider’s reference:
- Set the documented endpoint and method.
- Set the documented API-key or bearer-authentication header.
- Set
Content-Typeexactly as required. - Provide the template ID, slug, file field, or encoded content in the documented location.
- Use the exact case-sensitive layer, slot, or variable keys.
- Request the output format and dimensions your downstream system expects.
- Set a client timeout longer than the provider’s normal render time and capture the response body and headers for diagnostics.
Hosted-template JSON pattern
A hosted service such as html2img expects a slug in the URL and JSON input values. A service such as Templated expects a template ID, bearer authentication, and a layers object. The shape is conceptually similar, but the names and authentication differ:

Multipart file upload
For a multipart endpoint, attach the actual template file under the documented field name and include data fields as ordinary multipart parts. Confirm whether the upload creates a reusable asset or only affects the current render. Do not base64-encode a file unless the endpoint explicitly asks for it.
Base64 inline content
For an inline endpoint, read the file as bytes, base64-encode it, and place the resulting string in the documented JSON property. Preserve the original template encoding and ensure your JSON serializer does not truncate or escape the value incorrectly.

Portable template-definition files
The ima2-gen project documents a JSON node-template file containing a kind and version, imported into its application as a new template. That is an application import format, not a promise that a hosted image API accepts the same file. Validate the schema and version before importing, and keep the definition under source control so changes are reviewable.
Understand the response and job lifecycle
Synchronous responses
cloudlayer’s v1 endpoint is documented as synchronous and returns a raw image response. Your client must stream the body to a file or object store and verify the HTTP status and content type before treating it as an image.

Asynchronous jobs
cloudlayer’s v2 endpoint defaults to asynchronous processing and returns JSON job details unless configured to wait. Persist the job identifier, poll according to the provider’s interval guidance, or configure the documented webhook. Make webhook handlers idempotent: the same completion notification should not create duplicate records.
JSON result envelopes
html2img documents a JSON envelope containing a result URL. Templated documents a render response with an ID, URL, dimensions, and format. Download the URL only after checking its status and expiration rules, and record the returned dimensions and format with your asset metadata.
Verify the rendered image
A successful HTTP response does not prove that the design is correct. Add application-level checks:

- Confirm the response is the expected image media type or a valid JSON envelope.
- Check that the image dimensions match the requested dimensions.
- Open or decode the image in a validation library to catch truncated files.
- Verify required dynamic fields are present and non-empty.
- Reject unexpected fallback text, missing fonts, or unexpanded variables.
- Record the provider request ID, template version, input record ID, and output URL or object key.
For asynchronous services, apply these checks when the job completes rather than when the submission merely succeeds.
Common failures and fixes

| Template not found | Wrong slug, ID, account, or version | Confirm the identifier belongs to the authenticated account and select an available version. |
| Blank or partially rendered image | External assets, fonts, or data were unavailable at render time | Use provider-supported asset URLs, wait controls, and fonts; inspect the rendered output rather than trusting status 200. |
| Timeout | Heavy assets, complex HTML, or an asynchronous endpoint treated as synchronous | Increase the client timeout within provider limits, reduce asset weight, or use the documented job flow. |
| Job remains pending | Polling too aggressively, invalid callback URL, or provider-side queueing | Use backoff, verify webhook reachability and signature handling, and retain the job ID for support. |
Performance, reliability, and cost decisions
Reduce work per render
- Reuse a hosted template instead of uploading identical content for every record.
- Optimize large background images and avoid unnecessary external requests.
- Pin fonts and assets to stable versions.
- Batch submissions only when the provider documents bulk support; otherwise implement bounded concurrency.
Make retries safe
Retry network failures and documented transient server errors with exponential backoff. Do not blindly retry validation errors. If the provider offers idempotency keys, use one derived from your business render ID so a timeout cannot create duplicate assets.
Track usage and storage
Providers may charge for renders, stored templates, output storage, or job volume. The supplied documentation does not establish comparable quotas or prices for cloudlayer, html2img, Templated, Carbone, or ima2-gen, so check the current terms for the service you select. Keep template versions and generated assets on a retention schedule appropriate to your data.

Implementation checklist
- Name the provider’s template model: ID, slug, file, base64, or portable definition.
- Decide whether the template should persist and whether a version must be pinned.
- Map every dynamic field to the provider’s exact key or layer name.
- Implement the documented authentication and content type.
- Handle raw bytes, result URLs, or asynchronous jobs according to the response contract.
- Validate status, media type, dimensions, and populated fields.
- Add bounded retries, idempotency, logging, and retention rules.
- Recheck the provider’s live API reference before deployment because endpoint behavior and limits can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use one provider’s template file with another image API?
Usually not. Template IDs, layer schemas, file formats, and portable-definition versions are provider-specific unless both services document the same interchange format.
Should I upload a template for every render?
No, not when the service supports stored templates. Upload once, retain the returned ID and intended version, and render by reference.
How do I know whether a render is complete?
Check the provider’s documented response: it may be image bytes, a JSON result URL, or a job that requires polling or a webhook. Then validate the actual image.
