For a conventional static website or framework build, Cloudflare Pages is the simplest place to start: connect a Git repository or upload the built files, deploy, and use the supplied pages.dev address. Choose Workers Static Assets instead when the project needs server-side Worker code, bindings, or a Wrangler-first deployment. This guide walks through both paths, custom domains, and the errors most likely to block a launch.
Choose Pages or Workers
Cloudflare offers two relevant ways to publish a site. Pages is suited to static files and framework output, with Git integration, Direct Upload, and preview deployments. Workers Static Assets serves static files through a Worker project, so it is a better fit when assets belong alongside server-side behavior or Worker bindings.
Cloudflare’s Pages overview says that Workers supports most Pages use cases and offers a broader feature set, describing Workers as its primary platform for building applications; the overview was updated August 25, 2026. That does not make Workers the simplest choice for every static site. Pick based on how you build and operate the site.

Do not start a new project with Workers Sites: Cloudflare’s documentation says to use Workers Static Assets for full-stack applications instead. Cloudflare marks Workers Sites deprecated in Wrangler v4. For a production site, configure a custom domain or route rather than relying on a workers.dev subdomain; Cloudflare describes workers.dev as intended for personal or hobby projects that are not business-critical.

Prepare your files and build settings
Plain HTML
Make sure the directory you deploy contains a top-level index.html. It is the default entry point for the site root. If your files are in a folder such as public or dist, configure that folder as the output directory rather than deploying the project root by mistake.
Framework-built sites
Identify the build command and the directory that contains the finished static output. For example, Cloudflare’s static HTML guidance allows an optional build command of exit 0 when no build is needed and a custom output directory. For a Next.js static export, Cloudflare’s guide specifies npx next build and out as the build directory. Use the settings that match the actual project; a successful build is not enough if Pages is pointed at the wrong output folder.
Deploy with Cloudflare Pages
- Sign in to the Cloudflare dashboard and open Workers & Pages.
- Select the option to create an application, choose Pages, then select either Git integration or Direct Upload.
- For Git integration, authorize the repository and select the project repository. Set the production branch, build command, and build output directory. For Direct Upload, provide the already-built output directory.
- Deploy the project. Pages provides a unique
*.pages.devhostname where you can check the published site. - For a Git-connected project, push a change to confirm the deployment flow. Pages rebuilds on commits and creates preview deployments for pull requests, allowing you to review changes separately from the production deployment.
Pages is useful when you want a managed Git-to-deployment workflow without first creating a Worker project. Keep the deployment output directory aligned with the folder that contains the final site, not source files that still require a build.
Deploy with Workers Static Assets
Use this route when the site needs Worker code or you want to manage the project through Wrangler. Static assets belong in the project’s configured public directory; the Worker can also use bindings and server-side code.

- Create a Worker project and configure its static assets directory and any Worker code or bindings the project needs.
- Run
npx wrangler devfrom the project directory to develop and check the application locally. - When ready, run
npx wrangler deploy. - Publish to the project’s
*.workers.devhostname for a personal or hobby project, or configure a custom domain or route for the production endpoint.
Workers’ routing documentation characterizes workers.dev as a Free website intended for personal or hobby projects that are not business-critical. Treat it as a development or non-critical address, not as the default production domain for a business website.
Choose a domain before connecting it
If you do not own a domain yet, decide on its name and register it before starting the custom-domain steps. The setup differs for an apex domain such as example.com and a subdomain such as www.example.com. An apex domain requires the domain to be a Cloudflare zone with its nameservers pointed to Cloudflare; a subdomain can use a CNAME to the Pages hostname.
Connect a custom domain to Pages
- Open the Pages project in Cloudflare and go to Custom domains.
- Add the hostname you want to use and complete the domain association in the Pages dashboard.
- For an apex domain such as
example.com, ensure it is a Cloudflare zone and its nameservers point to Cloudflare. - For a subdomain such as
www.example.com, create a CNAME pointing to<YOUR_SITE>.pages.dev. Associate the custom domain with the Pages project before relying on the DNS record. - Wait for Cloudflare to provision the domain and certificate, then test the exact hostname you added.
Do not treat a DNS record alone as the Pages domain setup. The Pages project must know about the hostname too.
Connect a custom domain or route to a Worker
- Open the Worker in the Cloudflare dashboard.
- Go to Settings > Domains & Routes.
- Add a Custom Domain or configure the appropriate route.
- Follow the dashboard prompts. For a Custom Domain, Cloudflare creates the DNS record and certificate.
A Custom Domain associates a hostname directly with the Worker, while a route is the production endpoint choice when the Worker should handle requests for a configured route. Choose the option that matches how the Worker is meant to receive traffic.

Check the site after deployment
- Open the root URL and a representative page or asset, not just the deployment dashboard.
- For Pages, confirm the deployment output directory contains the site’s top-level
index.htmlif the root path is expected to work. - Test the custom hostname after associating it in the relevant Pages project or Worker settings.
- For Git-connected Pages sites, verify that a new commit triggers a build and that pull requests receive previews if you rely on that workflow.
Troubleshoot common Cloudflare hosting problems
Pages shows a 404 at the root
The deployed output may not contain a top-level index.html. Check the selected build output directory and inspect the built files; configure Pages to publish the directory that actually contains the entry file.
A Pages custom domain returns 522
A CNAME may have been added manually before the hostname was associated with the Pages project. Add the domain under the project’s Custom domains menu first, then use the DNS setup Cloudflare requires.
The domain certificate is not issued
Existing CAA records can restrict which certificate authorities may issue a certificate for the domain. Check the domain’s CAA records and ensure they allow an accepted certificate authority before retrying certificate issuance.
The site works on the provider hostname but not the custom domain
Check that the hostname was added to the correct Pages project or Worker. For an apex Pages domain, verify the zone and nameserver requirements; for a Pages subdomain, verify the CNAME target and project association. For a Worker Custom Domain, use the dashboard’s Settings > Domains & Routes configuration rather than assuming a DNS record alone is sufficient.

Wrangler deploys but the assets are missing
Confirm that the files are in the configured public directory and that the Worker project’s static assets configuration points to it. Run npx wrangler dev to check the project locally before deploying again.
You are following an old Workers Sites guide
Workers Sites is deprecated in Wrangler v4. For a new full-stack project, use Workers Static Assets rather than adopting the deprecated approach.

FAQ
Can I host a website on Cloudflare for free?
The reviewed Cloudflare documentation identifies workers.dev as a Free website, but it does not establish pricing for every Pages or Workers configuration. Check Cloudflare’s current plan and product terms for the deployment you intend to use.
Should a Next.js site use Pages or Workers?
If the site is a static export, Pages can publish the generated output; Cloudflare’s static export settings specify npx next build with out as the build directory. If the application needs server-side Worker behavior or bindings, consider Workers Static Assets.
Can I use a domain registered elsewhere?
A Pages subdomain can use a CNAME to the project’s pages.dev hostname after the hostname is associated with the Pages project. An apex Pages domain has the additional requirement that it be a Cloudflare zone with nameservers pointed to Cloudflare.
