Generate or choose an image that is publicly reachable over HTTPS, deploy it, and put its absolute URL in your page’s og:image metadata. In Next.js, the simplest choices are a static opengraph-image file or a generated image route using ImageResponse. The image URL must work for social crawlers without a login, and the deployed page—not just your local code—must expose it.
What an Open Graph image URL is
An Open Graph image URL is the value of the content attribute on a page’s meta property="og:image" tag. It points to the image a social platform can fetch when it previews that page. The URL may point to an ordinary image file or to an endpoint that generates an image when requested.
Use a full, absolute HTTPS URL, such as https://example.com/api/og?title=Example, rather than a relative path such as /api/og. Social crawlers request the image independently; the absolute URL identifies the host and resource they need. Vercel’s example likewise places an absolute endpoint URL in the page metadata: Vercel Open Graph image generation documentation.
Choose between a static image and a generated image
| Approach | Best suited to | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Static image file | Pages whose social image does not need to change per request | Simple to deploy and inspect; update the file when the design or content changes. |
| Next.js image file convention | A static image associated with a route or route segment | Next.js automatically emits metadata. A more specific route-segment image takes precedence over one higher in the folder tree. |
| Generated route or API endpoint | Images that include page-specific titles or other data | Requires a deployed public endpoint, attention to rendering constraints, and a cache strategy. |
For a single fixed campaign or landing page, a static asset is often the least complicated choice. For many pages with distinct titles, a generated image can reuse one template. If the image is generated from request data, decide whether those values should be baked into a static result or rendered dynamically; Next.js-generated images are statically optimized and cached by default unless Dynamic APIs or uncached data make the route dynamic.

Generate an image in Next.js with the file convention
Next.js supports static and generated Open Graph images through route-segment file conventions. The framework adds the associated metadata for you, so you do not need to hand-write an og:image tag for this convention.
Use a static file
- Place an image named
opengraph-image.jpg,opengraph-image.jpeg,opengraph-image.png, oropengraph-image.gifin the relevant route segment. - Deploy the application.
- Inspect the rendered page head or source and confirm that the generated
og:imagevalue is an absolute URL to the deployed image.
A more specific route-segment image takes precedence over an image in a parent segment. This lets a section or individual route provide its own social image without changing the image for the whole site. See the Next.js Open Graph and Twitter image file convention.
Generate an image for a dynamic route
Create app/blog/[slug]/opengraph-image.tsx and return an ImageResponse. This example uses the slug as text; adapt the markup and data to your page while keeping the generated route publicly fetchable.

import { ImageResponse } from 'next/og'
export const size = { width: 1200, height: 630 }
export const contentType = 'image/png'
export default async function Image({
params,
}: {
params: { slug: string }
}) {
return new ImageResponse(
<div style={{ display: 'flex', fontSize: 64 }}>
{params.slug}
</div>,
size,
)
}
The file convention associates the output with its route segment and generates metadata. For the precise supported parameters and current framework behavior, see the Next.js convention documentation.

Build a reusable Open Graph image URL
Use a route handler when you want one endpoint to render images for multiple pages. Read query parameters from the request URL, limit or validate their values, then return an image response. Deploy the handler before putting its URL in metadata.
import { ImageResponse } from 'next/og'
export async function GET(request: Request) {
const { searchParams } = new URL(request.url)
const title = searchParams.get('title')?.slice(0, 100) ?? 'Default title'
return new ImageResponse(
<div style={{ display: 'flex', fontSize: 64 }}>{title}</div>,
{ width: 1200, height: 630 },
)
}
Then publish an absolute URL in the page head:
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/api/og?title=Example" />
In Next.js, metadata can be returned from the Metadata API. Use the deployed origin to construct the image URL, rather than relying on a relative path. The official guidance and examples are in Next.js generateMetadata documentation.

For query-driven images, encode values as URL parameters and treat them as untrusted input. Cap title length, provide a default for missing values, and avoid placing secrets or private data in the URL. Query strings may also affect caching: if each title produces a different image, make sure your deployment’s cache behavior distinguishes those URLs or deliberately invalidates the result when the design changes.
Set dimensions and understand rendering limits
Vercel recommends a 1200×630-pixel canvas for Open Graph images. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee that every platform displays the full image identically. Keep essential text and branding legible within the rendered canvas and check the preview in the social service you plan to use. See Vercel’s image-generation documentation.
The Vercel @vercel/og implementation converts supported HTML and CSS to PNG using Satori and Resvg. Flexbox is supported; do not assume CSS Grid or arbitrary browser CSS will render as it would in a full browser. Its documented setup requires Node.js 22 or newer, supports the Node.js runtime, accepts TTF, OTF, and WOFF fonts, and documents a 500 KB maximum bundle that includes JSX, CSS, fonts, and images. These constraints apply to that documented Vercel setup; check the current deployment and framework requirements before adopting them elsewhere.

Vercel also recommends allowing the OG API route in robots.txt so social providers can fetch it. A route that works for you in a logged-in browser can still fail for a crawler if it is blocked, requires authentication, or depends on assets the crawler cannot access.
Make sure social platforms can fetch the image
- Deploy the route first. Local URLs such as
localhostare not usable by external crawlers. - Check the page metadata. View the deployed page source or head and verify that
og:imagecontains an absolute HTTPS URL. Next.js metadata image values should be absolute; see the Metadata API reference. - Open the image URL directly. It should return an image without a login, session cookie, or interactive browser step.
- Check crawler access. Confirm that deployment rules and
robots.txtdo not prevent the social provider from requesting the route. - Inspect the actual render. Check dimensions, line wrapping, font loading, external assets, and long titles at the deployed URL.
- Preview and refresh deliberately. Use the deployment provider’s Open Graph preview or inspection workflow before publishing. If you later change a title or template, account for static and CDN caching with a versioned URL or an intentional invalidation strategy.
Vercel documents an Open Graph preview workflow in its Next.js metadata and OG images guide. Preview tools can reveal stale cached previews as well as malformed metadata; test the image endpoint itself when the page preview does not update.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common failures
- The page has no preview image: Check that the deployed page head includes
og:image, that its value is absolute HTTPS, and that the URL points to a deployed resource rather than a local path. - The image URL opens only when you are signed in: Remove authentication requirements for the image route and its dependent assets. Social crawlers cannot use your browser session.
- The route returns an error or HTML instead of an image: Request the URL directly and verify the deployed handler returns an
ImageResponserather than an error page. Check the deployment logs and ensure the route is in the expected runtime. - Some styling or layout disappears: Simplify unsupported CSS, use supported Flexbox layouts, and inspect the rendered output rather than assuming normal browser CSS support. For Vercel’s documented setup, Satori and Resvg render supported HTML/CSS to PNG.
- Fonts or images are missing: Verify that those assets are available to the deployed route, are publicly fetchable where needed, and fit within applicable bundle limits. The Vercel documentation lists TTF, OTF, and WOFF font support and a 500 KB maximum bundle for its setup.
- The image looks correct but a preview shows an older version: Static optimization and CDN caching can preserve a prior image. Use a versioned URL or the deployment’s invalidation mechanism, then recheck the image URL and preview.
- Crawlers do not seem to request the endpoint: Check robots rules and deployment access controls. Vercel recommends allowing its OG API route in
robots.txt. - A long title is cut off or overwhelms the design: Limit input length, wrap or scale text intentionally, and test representative long titles in the deployed image. The sample handler caps the title at 100 characters, but your layout may need a lower limit.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of a page or generated image endpoint rather than building an image template, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call endpoint accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF; this is useful for checking what a public page actually renders, though it does not replace setting the page’s og:image metadata.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Open Graph image URL have to be absolute?
Yes. Use a public absolute HTTPS URL so a social crawler can identify and request the image host and path.
What size should an Open Graph image be?
Vercel recommends 1200×630 pixels. Inspect the deployed render and platform preview to ensure the content remains legible.
Can the image URL be a route that generates an image?
Yes. A public endpoint can render an image on demand; put that endpoint’s absolute URL in the page’s `og:image` metadata.
