To generate a website screenshot request URL, send a GET request to a screenshot service’s documented endpoint and pass the page you want captured as its url query parameter. Encode the target page URL as a query value—especially when it contains its own query string—and add only options supported by that service. For example, ScreenshotNeo accepts a page URL at https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot; its API key is required. The exact endpoint, parameter names, authentication, and response format vary by provider.
What a screenshot URL is—and what it is not
A screenshot request URL addresses the screenshot service, not the page being captured. The service receives the target page as a parameter, renders it, and returns a result according to its API contract. A generic shape is:

This is a structural example, not a working endpoint or credential. Use the endpoint, authentication method, and parameter names in the selected provider’s documentation. Do not assume that the request URL is a permanent, shareable image URL. Depending on the service, a successful request may return raw image or file bytes, JSON containing base64 image data and metadata, a redirect, or a URL to a stored image. Check the provider’s response documentation before using the result in an <img> element or sharing it.
Build the request URL correctly
1. Start with the provider’s endpoint and authentication
Copy the service endpoint from its documentation, then determine whether it expects GET, POST, or both. Confirm where its API key belongs. A GET request may put the key in the query string; a provider may instead support a POST request with a JSON body and Bearer authentication. These are provider-specific choices, not interchangeable conventions.
2. Supply an absolute target page URL
Set the target parameter to the full page address, including https:// or http://. ScreenshotEngine specifies an absolute, publicly reachable HTTP or HTTPS URL. A relative path such as /pricing is not enough unless the service explicitly documents a base URL feature.
3. Encode the target as one query parameter
The target page is nested inside the screenshot request URL. If it contains its own query string, characters such as & must not accidentally become parameters of the outer screenshot request. Use a query-parameter builder or curl --data-urlencode, rather than manually concatenating a complex URL. Site-Shot labels its target as URL-encoded, and ScreenshotAPI’s examples likewise percent-encode target URLs. See ScreenshotAPI’s render documentation.
4. Add only documented capture options
Depending on the service, options may control output format, viewport width and height, full-page capture, a CSS selector, dark mode or device emulation, and a wait delay. Names, defaults, valid ranges, and supported methods differ. For example, ScreenshotEngine documents GET width values from 100 to 3840 pixels and heights from 100 to 10000 pixels, or full for full-page capture; those bounds apply to ScreenshotEngine, not screenshot APIs generally.

5. Handle the response according to its content type
Check the HTTP status and response headers, then save or parse the response as documented. ScreenshotEngine says successful calls return raw file bytes and advises checking Content-Type to identify formats such as JPEG, PNG, WebP, PDF, or WebM. Site-Shot documents direct image output by default, with an optional JSON response containing base64 image data and metadata. Do not treat binary image bytes as JSON or assume JSON is an image file.

If your application depends on a particular format, configure it using the provider’s supported parameter rather than inferring it from the filename.

Choose options that match the page you need
Screenshot URLs can become hard to manage when you append options by hand. Before adding them, decide what the output must show and verify the names and accepted values in the provider’s current documentation.
- Viewport or full page: A viewport capture shows the visible browser area; a full-page capture attempts to include content beyond it. Lazy-loaded sections may require a provider feature or wait behavior that loads them first.
- Format and dimensions: Choose an image format and viewport dimensions supported by the API. Do not transfer a limit or default from one service to another.
- Selector capture: Some services can capture a specific element using a CSS selector. Check how the API responds if the selector is missing or matches more than one element.
- Wait behavior and emulation: If a page renders content after scripts run, a documented delay or wait condition may help. Dark mode and device emulation are also service-specific controls.
- Authentication for the target site: A screenshot service’s API key authenticates your request to that service; it does not automatically sign in to the page being captured. If a protected page is supported, use only the target-site cookies or headers and method documented by the screenshot service, and protect those credentials.
GET versus POST, and when a URL is not enough
GET is convenient for a simple request URL and easy to use with command-line tools. However, all query parameters—including a key when supplied there—are part of the request URL and may be recorded in logs. If the provider supports POST, a JSON body keeps capture options out of the URL itself; credentials still need standard secret handling. ScreenshotEngine documents both methods: its GET method requires an API key parameter, while its POST method accepts a Bearer API key. Do not assume another provider follows that arrangement.

Some providers also accept an HTML page or other input rather than a public website address, but support and request format must be confirmed in their docs. A screenshot request URL is not a general browser URL: opening the target page directly in a browser does not ask a screenshot service to capture it. Likewise, a response containing image bytes is not automatically a stable image address for later use.

The request returns an authentication error
Check that you are using the correct credential name and placement for the selected method. A key in a query parameter will not necessarily work with an endpoint that expects a Bearer token in a POST header, or vice versa. Keep credentials private when debugging by redacting them from shared logs.
The service says the target URL is invalid
Provide an absolute HTTP or HTTPS address, including the scheme. If the address has a query string or reserved characters, pass it through a query encoder. Confirm the target is publicly reachable if the provider requires public access.
The capture is of the wrong page or missing query-driven content
Inspect the final request URL or parameter object to verify the complete target URL arrived as one value. An unencoded ampersand in the nested target can split it into unintended screenshot-service parameters. Prefer a language’s query builder or cURL’s --data-urlencode.

Check the HTTP status before saving the body, then inspect Content-Type and the provider’s response format. The body may be a JSON error, base64 data, or a different file type rather than raw image bytes. Save binary responses in binary mode.

The screenshot is blank, incomplete, or missing an element
First confirm the target page loads normally and that the requested viewport or selector is valid. The page may render asynchronously, require a longer documented wait, or defer images until they are scrolled into view. Try a provider-supported wait condition or full-page/lazy-load option if available; exact controls vary by service.
The request fails or times out
Check the provider’s status code, documented limits, and timeout guidance. A slow or inaccessible target can fail independently of the syntax of your request URL. Increase the client timeout only within the API’s stated behavior; retry transient failures cautiously rather than sending an unlimited retry loop.
Reliability, performance, and cost checks
For production use, treat screenshot capture as a remote rendering operation, not an instantaneous static file lookup. Pages may load at different speeds, and a capture may fail because the destination blocks automation, is unavailable, or does not finish rendering in time. Set a sensible client timeout, check status and response headers, and decide how your application should handle a failed capture before embedding the result in a workflow.
- Use the provider’s documented wait controls for dynamic pages instead of assuming a fixed delay is universally sufficient.
- Store or cache successful results only if your requirements and the provider’s terms allow it; cached responses and retention behavior are provider-specific.
- Review the billing rules for successful captures, failed loads, retries, and any cache behavior. Do not infer cost from the number of URLs alone.
- For high-volume work, check documented rate limits, concurrency limits, asynchronous job support, and webhook behavior before designing a batch process.
- Prefer POST or protected server-side request construction when a long set of options or a sensitive credential makes a URL unsuitable for logs or sharing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I paste a screenshot API URL into an image tag?
Only if that provider’s endpoint returns an image response in a form the browser can load and the request can be authenticated as required. Some endpoints return JSON or require a secret key, so verify both response format and credential exposure before using an endpoint in public HTML.
Does a screenshot URL work for a private website?
Not automatically. The screenshot service must be able to reach the page, and any required login or network access must be supported and configured safely. A service requirement for a public target URL rules out pages it cannot access.
Are screenshot API parameters standardized?
No. Even when services share a parameter such as url, endpoint structure, option names, defaults, authentication, and response behavior remain provider-specific.
