There is no single “headless Chrome fix” for WebDriverException. It is Selenium’s broad WebDriver base exception. The useful diagnosis comes from the complete message and traceback, the line that raised it, and whether the failure happened while creating webdriver.Chrome() or after Chrome had already started. A session-creation error usually points to browser/driver compatibility, executable paths, permissions, or operating-system restrictions. An error from get(), element lookup, or an interaction usually requires a page-state, selector, or synchronization fix.
Use the sequence below to identify the failing layer before changing Chrome flags. It covers current headless configuration, ChromeDriver management, logging, container considerations, waits, and alternatives when local WebDriver is not repeatable.
Start with the exact exception and failing line
Save the entire exception text and Python traceback. Do not reduce every failure to “Selenium headless Chrome is not working.” First classify the failure:
- During session creation: the exception is raised by
webdriver.Chrome(...). Look first at Chrome/ChromeDriver versions, binary locations, executable access, and operating-system restrictions. - After startup: Chrome launches, but a later call such as
driver.get(),find_element(), a click, or a script fails. Investigate page loading, synchronization, selectors, and the command named in the traceback.
SessionNotCreatedException is a distinct session-creation exception in Selenium’s Python API, while WebDriverException is the wider base class. Read the exact exception definitions in the Selenium Python exceptions API and compare them with the general Selenium troubleshooting guidance.

Record these details before changing anything:
- Python and Selenium versions.
- Chrome version and the ChromeDriver version actually being used.
- Operating system, container image, and CPU architecture.
- The Chrome options and any custom binary or driver paths.
- The exact line that raises the exception.
Check Chrome and ChromeDriver compatibility
For current Chrome automation, the browser and ChromeDriver major versions should match. A driver found on PATH may belong to an older package even when the browser was updated by an operating-system repository or CI image.
Chrome 115 and later
From Chrome milestone 115 onward, ChromeDriver releases are integrated with Chrome releases. The official ChromeDriver version-selection documentation directs users to Chrome for Testing releases and their JSON endpoints for paired browser and driver versions. Use those endpoints or your image’s documented package source rather than guessing a download URL.
Older installations and managed images
If Chrome is supplied by an OS package, verify the driver package was updated at the same time. In a custom installation, find the browser executable and the driver executable explicitly, then confirm both are readable and executable by the account running the test. Selenium’s common-errors guide lists incompatibility, system restrictions, and missing, inaccessible, or non-executable drivers among session-creation causes.
Let Selenium Manager resolve the driver
Selenium 4.6 and newer includes Selenium Manager, which can obtain a needed driver in supported environments. The normal path is:

Use the current headless Chrome configuration
Chrome’s supported headless mode is enabled with --headless. A minimal Python Selenium session is:

Selenium’s Chrome documentation also lists --headless=new; current Chrome guidance treats --headless (or that equivalent form) as modern headless mode. Prefer the uncomplicated --headless argument unless a target environment requires a particular legacy behavior.
The old implementation is no longer bundled in the regular Chrome binary beginning with Chrome 132; it is distributed as the separate chrome-headless-shell binary. See Google’s headless removal announcement if you depend on that legacy implementation. Do not mix a legacy binary with an unrelated ChromeDriver version.
Use options.add_argument("--headless") (or --headless=new) rather than the removed options.headless = True pattern. Selenium’s current guidance demonstrates the argument-based configuration.
Verify binary paths, permissions, and operating-system restrictions
When the traceback says the session could not be created, check the environment rather than adding flags at random:
- Confirm the Chrome binary exists at the path your service or package manager provides.
- Confirm ChromeDriver exists, is executable, and can be launched by the same user as the Python process.
- Check that the driver is not blocked by file permissions, endpoint security, code-signing policy, or an execution restriction.
- Check that the process can create its temporary profile and communicate with the driver’s local port.
- Read the ChromeDriver output for the first concrete failure, such as an exited browser, inaccessible path, or rejected session command.
Linux containers often fail because of image libraries, user permissions, sandbox policy, or resource limits. The cited Selenium material does not establish one universal Linux flag recipe, so do not automatically add --no-sandbox or shared-memory workarounds. Apply a change only when the actual error or your container policy supports it, and document the security trade-off.
Turn on ChromeDriver logging
Startup logs distinguish a wrong path from a browser crash or a protocol/session problem. Selenium 4.11 and later can send ChromeDriver output to a file through the Python Service object:

driver.quit()The Selenium Chrome documentation shows this logging approach, and the Python Service API documents log_output as a path or stream. If you need a pinned driver, provide its executable path to Service(executable_path=...); otherwise leave the path unset so Selenium Manager can work.
If Chrome starts, debug the command after startup
A successful browser process does not prove that the next command can succeed. Follow the traceback to the first failing WebDriver call.
Navigation failures
For a failure at driver.get(url), verify the URL, DNS and network access from the same machine or container, TLS interception, proxy configuration, and whether the page redirects to a login or bot-check screen. Capture the current URL and title before making assumptions about the page you expected.
Element lookup failures
A missing element may not yet exist, may be inside a frame or shadow root, or may have moved since the locator was written. Confirm the page has loaded and that the selector matches the current markup. Selenium’s error guidance explains that no-such-element failures commonly mean the element has not appeared yet or the locator/page is wrong.

Selenium’s official troubleshooting page states: “The most common Selenium-related error is a result of poor synchronization.” Replace fixed sleeps with an explicit wait for the state you need:

Use another browser as an isolation test
Selenium recommends trying another browser when diagnosing a problem. If the same locator and wait fail in multiple browsers, investigate page state or test code first. If only Chrome fails, return to ChromeDriver logs, binary compatibility, and Chrome-specific configuration.

Local WebDriver or a remote browser?
Local WebDriver is usually simplest when you control the browser, driver, operating system, and image. It offers direct control over installed versions and local files, but every developer machine and CI image must remain reproducible.
Remote WebDriver or hosted browser testing moves execution to a controlled environment and can improve repeatability across browser and operating-system combinations. Compare supported browser versions, operating-system coverage, session diagnostics, integration effort, reproducibility, and cost before choosing a service. Selenium documents remote sessions in its driver-session documentation; provider pricing and capabilities vary and are not established here.
