If PrtSc appears not to work, first test the clipboard: press PrtSc, open Paint, and press Ctrl+V. Windows normally copies the image instead of creating a desktop file. If nothing pastes, check the Print Screen setting, try Windows+Shift+S, and verify your keyboard’s Fn behavior.
What the Print Screen key is supposed to do
Microsoft describes PrtSc (also labeled PrtScn or Print Screen) as capturing the entire screen and copying the image to the Clipboard. It does not necessarily save a PNG file automatically. Open Paint, Word, an email compose window, or another image-capable app and press Ctrl+V to see whether the capture arrived. If the image pastes, the key is working; save the pasted image from that application. If nothing pastes, continue with the checks below.

Keyboard labels, firmware and manufacturer layouts vary, so an Fn combination documented for one model is not guaranteed on another.

1. Test the Clipboard before changing settings
- Press PrtSc once. Do not hold it unless your keyboard manual says to.
- Open Paint by searching for Paint from the Start menu.
- Press Ctrl+V.
- If the screen appears, choose Paint’s save command and select PNG, JPEG or another format.
This test separates a working capture key from a missing-file expectation. Clipboard history is optional: press Windows+V to inspect recent clips, and enable it if Windows prompts you. Microsoft notes that history is off until enabled; ordinary copy-and-paste does not require history. Details are in Using the clipboard.
2. Check the Print Screen setting
Windows can assign the key to open screen snipping instead of performing the traditional full-screen clipboard action.
- Open Settings.
- Select Accessibility, then Keyboard.
- Find Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
- Turn it on if you want PrtSc to launch the Snipping Tool overlay, or turn it off if you want the traditional clipboard behavior.
- Press PrtSc again and test the result in Paint or the Snipping Tool.

3. Use Snipping Tool as an immediate workaround
Windows+Shift+S works even when the dedicated key is inconvenient or missing.

- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Choose the capture mode in the overlay: rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip or full-screen snip (the available modes can vary by Windows build).
- Select the area or window.
- Paste the result with Ctrl+V, or select the Snipping Tool notification to open the capture.
- Use the editor’s save command to write an image file.
Microsoft explains this workflow in Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots. It gives you selection control and an explicit edit-and-save path, so it is often the fastest way to keep working while diagnosing PrtSc.
4. Check your keyboard’s Fn and layout behavior
On compact laptops and external keyboards, Print Screen may share a key with another function or be hidden behind a secondary legend.
- Look for PrtSc, PrtScn, PS or a camera icon on the top row or navigation cluster.
- Try the key with Fn if the legend is a secondary function.
- If the keyboard has an Fn Lock key, switch its state and test again.
- Check the computer or keyboard manual for its supported screenshot shortcut.
Microsoft documents Windows+PrtScn for supported hardware and Fn+Windows+Space for devices without a PrtScn button in Keyboard shortcut for print screen. Do not assume that a Surface-specific or brand-specific combination applies to every Windows laptop.
5. Find screenshots saved by Windows
If you use Windows+PrtScn and the screen briefly dims, open File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. Sort by date if the folder contains many files.

When Pictures is included in OneDrive folder backup, the same Screenshots folder can appear under your OneDrive. Microsoft says the separate “Save screenshots to OneDrive” switch is no longer available; screenshot availability in OneDrive now follows whether the Pictures folder is backed up. 6. Diagnose the symptom before considering hardware
PrtSc does nothing, but Windows+Shift+S works
That points to the physical key, an Fn/keyboard-layout issue, a remapping utility, or the Print Screen setting—not a general Windows screenshot failure. Confirm the Accessibility setting, test the key with the correct Fn state, and temporarily check any keyboard-remapping software.
PrtSc copies an image, but no file appears
This is normal for the traditional shortcut. Paste into Paint and save, or use Windows+PrtScn and check Pictures > Screenshots.
Windows+Shift+S opens, but the snip is not visible
Click the notification immediately after selecting the area, or paste into Paint. If the notification is missed, open Snipping Tool from Start and check its recent capture workflow.

Windows+PrtScn produces no file
Verify that your hardware supports the shortcut, check Pictures > Screenshots, and inspect whether Pictures is redirected or backed up to OneDrive. Use Windows+Shift+S as a reliable file-saving alternative.
No shortcut works and the key is physically damaged
Test an external keyboard or the on-screen keyboard only after the software and destination checks above. If an external keyboard works, the built-in key or its keyboard matrix may be faulty. A replacement keyboard is a last step; confirm the layout includes a Print Screen function and is compatible with your computer.
Microsoft’s documentation does not establish one universal driver or registry repair for every Print Screen failure. The exact computer model, keyboard model and Windows version are needed before attempting device-specific repairs.

Does Print Screen always save a screenshot file?
No. The traditional PrtSc shortcut copies the full screen to the Clipboard. Paste it into an image-capable application and save it yourself; Windows+PrtScn is the shortcut intended to save a file on supported hardware.
Can I take a screenshot without a Print Screen key?
Yes. Windows+Shift+S opens Snipping Tool, and Microsoft documents Fn+Windows+Space for supported devices that have no PrtScn button.
Where is the Windows screenshot folder?
For Windows+PrtScn captures, check File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. If Pictures is backed up, the folder may also be under OneDrive.
Why does my Print Screen key open a selection box?
The Accessibility > Keyboard setting “Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping” is enabled. Change that setting if you prefer the traditional Clipboard behavior.
