If Facebook still shows an old image for a WordPress URL, do not keep changing the post thumbnail. First inspect the live page source, find the og:image value that crawlers actually receive, correct the highest-precedence setting, purge every relevant cache, and then run Facebook Sharing Debugger with Scrape Again. This sequence separates a WordPress metadata problem from an origin/CDN cache or Facebook’s own cached preview.
1. Check what the public page serves
Open the published, canonical URL in a private browser window, view its page source (not only the WordPress editor), and search for og:image. The URL in that tag is the image Facebook can fetch. Also check og:url, the page title, and whether more than one og:image tag is present.
- Load the exact URL that people share, including its protocol and preferred trailing-slash form.
- Use View Source and search for
property="og:image". - Copy the complete image URL and open it directly in an unauthenticated browser window.
- Compare the source with the image shown in Facebook Sharing Debugger. If they disagree, the fault is usually caching or duplicate metadata rather than the editor preview.

Start at the top and work downward. A page-level image can continue to win after you replace the featured image. Conversely, changing a global default will not override an explicitly assigned image on one page. Current Yoast guidance also points to the content-type social-image setting when a site image appears unchanged.

3. Keep one Open Graph metadata owner
Two SEO or social plugins can both emit og:image, og:title, and related tags. Their output may conflict, and a crawler can select an unexpected value. Choose one plugin to generate Open Graph tags, disable the duplicate feature in the other plugin, clear caches, and confirm that the source contains one intended og:image. Theme code, a social-sharing plugin, or custom snippets can also be a second emitter.
4. Validate the image itself
Rank Math support lists JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, and AVIF as supported formats and recommends a 1200×630-pixel image. The exact file still has to be fetchable:
- Use an absolute HTTPS URL, not a relative path.
- Make the file publicly reachable without a login, expiring token, or cookie.
- Confirm the response has an image content type and does not redirect to an HTML error page.
- Check that hotlink protection, a firewall, robots policy, or geographic restriction is not blocking Facebook’s crawler.
- Ensure the image URL itself is the new URL. Replacing file contents at a heavily cached, unchanged URL can prolong stale results; a new filename or query-free permanent URL is often easier to verify.
Open the image URL directly while logged out and, where possible, inspect the response headers. A successful browser display does not prove that a bot without your session can retrieve it.

5. Purge caches in the correct layers
Purging only your browser does not invalidate WordPress HTML, an origin cache, a CDN object, or Facebook’s stored preview. Clear the layers that your installation uses, in this order:
- Purge the active WordPress caching plugin.
- Purge the hosting or web-server cache.
- Purge the CDN cache, such as Cloudflare, if configured.
- Purge Redis, Memcached, or another object cache when your host exposes it.
- Reload the public source and the image URL in a private window to verify that the new value is now served.
Cache keys can differ between http and https, hostnames, query strings, and trailing slashes. Purge the exact canonical URL and confirm that redirects lead to the URL you debug.
6. Force Facebook to fetch the URL again
- Open Facebook Sharing Debugger.
- Enter the exact canonical URL and choose Debug.
- Read the warnings and preview data.
- Choose Scrape Again.
- Use Show All Raw Tags to compare Facebook’s received tags with your live page source.
Yoast’s support instructions explicitly recommend this Debug then Scrape Again process. The fb:app_id warning is not a reason to add code: Yoast states that the fb:app_id meta tag is not required.

How to interpret the result
- Debugger shows the new image: WordPress and Facebook’s scraper now have the intended metadata. If a particular feed still shows the old card, that feed may retain its own rendered copy; use that platform’s refresh process where available.
- Debugger still shows the old image: Return to the live source, plugin precedence, duplicate emitters, and cache layers. Editing the visible post content again will not change a stale tag being served from cache.
- Debugger cannot fetch the page or image: test the URL while logged out, inspect redirects and response status, and check firewall, bot protection, hotlink rules, and server timeouts.
