Get-NetAdapter : Invalid class with HRESULT 0x80041010 means PowerShell cannot resolve the MSFT_NetAdapter CIM provider in ROOTStandardCimv2. It is normally a WMI/CIM registration, repository, or Windows-component problem—not proof that the physical network adapter or its driver has failed. Work through the checks below before reinstalling drivers or deleting the WMI repository.
What the error means
The Network Adapter PowerShell cmdlets use the MSFT_NetAdapter class in the ROOTStandardCimv2 namespace. Microsoft documents the class and its provider files as NetAdapterCim.mof and NetAdapterCim.dll (Microsoft documentation). When the class cannot be resolved, PowerShell reports an invalid class rather than an empty adapter list.
This is different from a disabled adapter, a missing device, a failed driver, an access-denied error, or an unrecognised cmdlet. Current Windows 10, Windows 11, and supported Windows Server installations normally include this provider; Microsoft lists support beginning with Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. Customized images, recovery environments, and stripped deployments may differ.
1. Capture and identify the failure
Run the following in an elevated PowerShell window and save the complete output:

$PSVersionTableLook for MSFT_NetAdapter, ROOT/StandardCimv2, and HRESULT 0x80041010. Also check that the command itself is available:
Get-Command Get-NetAdapter -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Get-Module -ListAvailable -Name NetAdapterIf Get-Command finds nothing, the NetAdapter module or feature is unavailable in that environment; that is a different problem from an invalid CIM class.
2. Test the class directly
These commands bypass the wrapper and show whether the namespace and provider work:
Get-CimClass -Namespace RootStandardCimv2 -ClassName MSFT_NetAdapter
Get-CimInstance `
-Namespace RootStandardCimv2 `
-ClassName MSFT_NetAdapter |
Select-Object Name, InterfaceDescription, Status, DeviceIDA successful first command returns class metadata; the second returns adapter instances. If Get-CimClass itself reports an invalid class, the fault is below Get-NetAdapter: registration, namespace contents, provider files, or the Windows image. If the class exists but instance creation fails, investigate provider execution, the WMI service, permissions, or the session context.

3. Rule out the wrong computer or a remote-session issue
Get-NetAdapter supports CIM sessions, so automation can query a machine other than the one you are viewing. Test the local computer explicitly:
Get-CimInstance `
-ComputerName localhost `
-Namespace RootStandardCimv2 `
-ClassName MSFT_NetAdapterThen test the intended target, for example:
Get-NetAdapter -CimSession $sessionIf localhost succeeds while the target fails, focus on the target’s Windows build, provider files, WMI repository, remoting configuration, and permissions. A cloud or virtual machine is not automatically the cause; image customization and provisioning differences are more useful clues.
4. Check Winmgmt and the provider files
Check the WMI service:
Get-Service Winmgmt
Start-Service WinmgmtStart the service only when it is stopped. This may restore queries, but an explicit invalid-class response still points more specifically to a missing or unusable class.
Inspect the documented provider files:
$wbem = Join-Path $env:windir 'System32wbem'
Test-Path "$wbemNetAdapterCim.mof"
Test-Path "$wbemNetAdapterCim.dll"
Get-Item "$wbemNetAdapterCim.mof","$wbemNetAdapterCim.dll" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinueDo not download replacement DLLs or MOF files from an unofficial site. Missing files indicate Windows component or image damage and should be repaired with DISM and SFC.

5. Re-register NetAdapterCim when the files exist
If both files are present and the class remains absent, use an elevated Command Prompt for this targeted repair:
cd /d %windir%System32wbem
regsvr32.exe NetAdapterCim.dll
mofcomp.exe NetAdapterCim.mofRestart Windows, then run:
Get-CimClass -Namespace RootStandardCimv2 -ClassName MSFT_NetAdapter
Get-NetAdapterMicrosoft’s class reference identifies the files, while its documented repair pattern for a related networking provider uses regsvr32 followed by mofcomp (related Microsoft guidance). Therefore this is a reasonable, targeted inference—not a guarantee or a universal Microsoft-prescribed fix. Use change control on production servers.
6. Verify and salvage the WMI repository
From an elevated Command Prompt, check repository consistency:
winmgmt /verifyrepository- Repository is consistent: corruption is not proven; continue with provider and Windows-image checks.
- Repository is inconsistent: salvage it before considering a reset.
- Command fails: record the exact output and avoid destructive cleanup.
Salvage with Microsoft’s supported operation:
winmgmt /salvagerepositoryThis checks consistency and rebuilds the repository when an inconsistency is found, merging readable content where possible. Reboot and repeat the class and cmdlet tests.

7. Reserve repository reset for a last resort
winmgmt /resetrepository restores the repository to the state created during initial operating-system installation and restores MOF files marked for autorecovery (Microsoft winmgmt documentation):
winmgmt /resetrepositoryUse it only after verification, salvage, provider registration, and image repair have failed, with a recovery plan and maintenance window. Do not start by stopping Winmgmt and deleting %windir%System32wbemRepository; that unsupported shortcut can create additional registration problems.
8. Repair the Windows image and system files
Run these commands from an elevated Command Prompt:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc.exe /scannowDISM repairs the component store and SFC scans protected system files (DISM documentation; SFC documentation). Reboot if requested, then retest the class.

If Windows Update cannot provide repair content, specify a closely matching source, for example:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\serverc$Windows /LimitAccessThe source must match the operating-system version closely enough for servicing; Microsoft warns that the source system in its example runs the same operating-system version (Microsoft repair guidance).
9. Do not substitute the wrong provider
NetTCPIP.dll and NetTCPIP.mof belong to a different provider. Only use the related repair sequence when diagnostics identify a missing NetTCPIP class:
cd /d %windir%System32wbem
regsvr32.exe NetTCPIP.dll
mofcomp.exe NetTCPIP.mofRe-registering NetTCPIP does not repair a missing MSFT_NetAdapter class. If targeted repair and DISM/SFC fail, broader MOF recompilation (Microsoft script guidance), an in-place repair, or redeployment from a known-good image may be appropriate after collecting logs.

10. Use a temporary inspection fallback
While repairing the provider, inspect adapters through the older WMI class:
Get-CimInstance `
-Namespace RootCIMV2 `
-ClassName Win32_NetworkAdapter |
Select-Object Name, NetEnabled, NetConnectionStatus, PNPDeviceID
Get-NetIPConfiguration
ipconfig /all
netsh interface show interfaceWin32_NetworkAdapter is deprecated for new development and is not equivalent to MSFT_NetAdapter; treat it as a diagnostic fallback (Microsoft class documentation).

Final verification
After rebooting and completing repairs, run:
Get-CimClass -Namespace RootStandardCimv2 -ClassName MSFT_NetAdapter
Get-NetAdapter
Get-NetAdapter -Name * -IncludeHiddenSuccess means the class query returns metadata, the normal cmdlet returns adapter objects, and hidden adapters can be enumerated when requested. If only the final command fails while the class and ordinary enumeration work, investigate adapter state or device drivers rather than WMI.
