Bootstrap’s legacy .spanN classes and newer .col-*-N classes belong to different grid conventions; a PDF fix for one is not automatically a fix for the other. If the markup is sound, reduce the page to a minimal example and test it with the exact wkhtmltopdf binary, operating system, viewport, and scaling settings you use in production.
1. Identify the Bootstrap version and grid classes
Do not begin by adding CSS overrides. First establish the framework version loaded by the document being converted. Bootstrap’s grid class names have changed across generations, and copied advice can be ineffective or damaging if it targets a different version.
- Inspect the page’s stylesheet links and any bundled CSS. Check the file name, package metadata, or CSS header for a version identifier.
- Search the rendered HTML for the grid classes on the affected elements. Legacy
.spanNmarkup is not interchangeable with newer.col-*-Nmarkup. - Confirm the stylesheet is actually available to wkhtmltopdf. A browser page that loads CSS from a relative path, remote host, or build pipeline may not resolve that asset in the PDF conversion environment.
- Record the exact class names, stylesheet URL or local path, and whether the stylesheet is custom-built or unmodified framework CSS.
Bootstrap documentation describes a mobile-first 12-column grid with .row and column classes, while its v5.1 documentation also describes a distinct CSS Grid system as experimental and opt-in. Use documentation for the version you have loaded, not merely the version you think the site uses: Bootstrap grid documentation and Bootstrap v5.1 CSS Grid documentation.
2. Validate the grid markup and its arithmetic
Bootstrap’s conventional grid expects a container, a row, and columns grouped inside that row. Check the actual DOM nesting in the input passed to wkhtmltopdf; templates and server-side rendering can produce markup different from the source component.

- Confirm a
.containeror.container-fluidwraps the grid when the chosen Bootstrap layout expects one. - Confirm the row groups the intended columns and that the columns are immediate children of the row, rather than nested under an unrelated wrapper.
- For a 12-column row, add the column widths and determine whether their total is intended to fit within 12. If it exceeds 12, wrapping may be expected rather than a renderer defect.
- Check whether breakpoint-specific classes are being relied on. A PDF renderer has its own viewport; a class intended for a particular screen width may select a different layout than the one seen in a desktop browser.
- Look for custom CSS that changes widths, floats, display modes, margins, box sizing, or breakpoints for the same elements.

3. Reduce the page to a reproducible case
Once the version and markup are known, create the smallest input that still shows the defect. Keep the affected row, the relevant Bootstrap CSS, and only the custom rules needed to reproduce the result. Remove unrelated scripts, content, and styles a few at a time. This distinguishes a grid issue from a page-wide interaction such as a width rule, an unavailable asset, or overflowing content.
Run that same minimal HTML through the exact wkhtmltopdf executable and deployment environment that produces the bad PDF. Record the tool version and operating system/version. The project’s downloads page lists 0.12.6 as its stable series and gives June 11, 2020 as the release date. Builds can differ by Qt variant and distribution packaging, so capture the executable’s version output and the origin of the binary rather than recording only the name of a wrapper application. The release information was checked on September 29, 2026 and may change: wkhtmltopdf downloads.

4. Check PDF viewport and page scaling
A PDF conversion does not necessarily use the same viewport and scaling behavior as your browser. wkhtmltopdf exposes viewport and smart-shrinking settings; smart shrinking is described in its manual as a WebKit strategy that changes the pixel-to-DPI ratio. Inspect the command or library configuration used in production and record the current values before changing them.
- Generate a baseline PDF from the minimal reproduction with the existing production settings.
- Change only the viewport size, keeping all other inputs constant, and compare the affected row.
- Restore the baseline, then test smart shrinking enabled versus disabled using the documented option for your installed version.
- Retain each command and output, including page dimensions and any crop or overflow observed, so you can identify which setting caused a change.
A viewport adjustment or scaling change can make a layout appear to fit, but it may also shrink text or affect other pages. Avoid combining several setting changes into a single test. 5. Test overflow only when the affected element is a responsive table
If the broken content is inside Bootstrap’s .table-responsive wrapper, there is a narrow workaround worth testing: a user report concerning Bootstrap 4.2.1 describes changing that wrapper’s overflow-x from auto to visible. Apply it only to a minimal reproduction where the responsive table wrapper is present:

}This is an anecdotal report about one responsive-table case, not an official or universal Bootstrap fix. It does not establish a solution for legacy .spanN classes or ordinary Bootstrap columns. Check the resulting PDF for content that now overlaps, expands beyond the page, or is clipped elsewhere. Source: wkhtmltopdf issue discussion.
6. Decide whether wkhtmltopdf is the limiting factor
wkhtmltopdf renders HTML through Qt WebKit. Its project status page says: “Qt 4 (which wkhtmltopdf uses) hasn’t been supported since 2015, the WebKit in it hasn’t been updated since 2012.” That history makes differences from a current browser a plausible cause when the markup and assets are correct, but it does not prove that every layout defect is a renderer bug. The same project page describes QtWebKit as outdated and notes Qt 5’s removal of QtWebKit in 2016: wkhtmltopdf status.

If your report depends on layout behavior the installed renderer cannot reproduce, compare another renderer using the same minimal HTML and acceptance criteria. The wkhtmltopdf project names WeasyPrint or commercial Prince for controlled report generation, and Puppeteer for pages that need dynamic JavaScript. Choose based on support for the CSS actually used, JavaScript needs, maintenance of the rendering engine, deployment requirements, and licensing. The project’s mention is not a feature or price comparison: verify those details with each provider before switching.
