The simplest way to extract a public webpage as Markdown is the official MCP Fetch server: give its fetch tool a URL, then read the returned Markdown. Start with plain HTTP for static or server-rendered pages. If the result is an empty JavaScript shell, incomplete, or blocked, switch to a browser-backed MCP implementation or a hosted renderer.
What an MCP website-to-Markdown server does
Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets an AI client call a server through a defined tool interface. A web-fetching server accepts a URL, downloads the page, extracts its meaningful content, and returns Markdown that an agent can quote, summarize, index, or pass to another tool.
The official Fetch implementation is the clearest local baseline. Its documented tool is called fetch; it accepts a URL, can limit the response with max_length, retrieve later portions with start_index, and return raw content when requested. The project describes its purpose as providing web-content fetching capabilities and includes a prompt for fetching a URL and extracting its contents as Markdown. Configure an MCP client
In an MCP client such as Claude Desktop, add the server to the client’s MCP configuration using the command you installed. The exact configuration-file location and JSON wrapper depend on the client and operating system; use that client’s current MCP settings screen or documentation. Restart the client after saving the entry, then confirm that a fetch tool is available.
Extract a page as Markdown
- Open an MCP-capable client and start a conversation with the Fetch server enabled.
- Ask the client to fetch the complete URL, for example:
Fetch https://example.com/article and extract it as Markdown. - Inspect the returned title, headings, links, lists, tables, and body text. If the result is cut off, request the next range with
start_index. - For a large page, set a suitable
max_lengthfirst, then page through the remaining content instead of placing the entire document in one model context.
A practical follow-up request is: “Fetch this URL as Markdown, preserve headings, links and tables, and return the first 20,000 characters.” Then ask for the next chunk starting at the returned offset. Chunking makes token use predictable and avoids silently losing the end of a long page.
What the output preserves
HTML headings normally become Markdown headings, lists become list syntax, links retain their destinations, and readable table markup can become a Markdown table. Navigation, advertising, and other boilerplate may still appear, because extraction quality depends on the page’s structure. Always inspect the output before treating it as authoritative source material.

When plain fetching fails
JavaScript-rendered pages
Many modern sites send an almost empty HTML shell and populate the article after JavaScript runs. A plain HTTP fetch sees the shell, not the rendered content. In that case use a browser-backed server.
The open-source web-to-markdown-mcp project documents a three-tier strategy: request native text/markdown when a site offers it, try ordinary HTTP plus extraction, and finally launch Chromium. Its fetch_url_as_markdown tool exposes navigation timing, timeout, headless-mode, and post-navigation polling controls. Bot checks and regional delivery
A browser alone does not guarantee access. Bot checks, login walls, geofencing, and rate limits can prevent a page from being retrieved. A hosted MCP service may be more suitable when you need managed proxies or a controlled browser environment. HasData documents an MCP scraping tool that can return Markdown, text, HTML, or JSON, render JavaScript, wait for selectors, extract links, take screenshots, and run browser scenarios. Context.dev
Context.dev documents URL-to-Markdown conversion, full-site crawling, structured extraction, sitemap discovery, and SDKs for TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, Ruby, Go, and PHP. Its example MCP wrapper defines a scrape_web_markdown tool with a required URL and optional includeImages flag, then returns the page title, resolved URL, and Markdown body. You.com documents an MCP server that combines web search with page extraction and can return full page content in Markdown or HTML: docs.you.com. This is useful when discovery and extraction belong in the same agent workflow, rather than when you already know the exact URL.

Compare candidates on the dimensions that affect your workflow: whether the target is static or JavaScript-rendered, how bot protection and proxies are handled, Markdown fidelity, local privacy, deployment effort, paging controls, crawl or structured-extraction support, latency, and usage cost.
Security and privacy
The official Fetch documentation warns that the server can access local or internal IP addresses and may represent a security risk: github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers/tree/main/src/fetch. Treat every URL as untrusted input.
- Restrict outbound destinations with network egress rules or an allowlist when possible.
- Do not let untrusted prompts submit cloud metadata, intranet, database, or administrator URLs.
- Keep credentials out of URLs. Review how a hosted proxy stores cookies, headers, and authentication data.
- Run the fetch process with the least filesystem and network privilege it needs.
- Bound responses with
max_lengthor paging to limit context consumption and denial-of-service impact.

A reliable escalation workflow
- Try plain Fetch. It has the least setup and usually handles server-rendered HTML.
- Check the body, not just the HTTP status. An HTTP 200 response can still contain only a JavaScript shell, an access-denied message, or a consent wall.
- Use paging. Set a maximum length and retrieve subsequent chunks with
start_index. - Enable browser rendering. Supply a realistic timeout and wait for the page or a known selector when the content appears after navigation.
- Move to a hosted renderer. Choose this when you need managed proxies, regional delivery, crawling, or operational monitoring.
- Record provenance. Keep the requested URL, final resolved URL, retrieval time, and extraction mode alongside the Markdown.
Troubleshooting
The MCP tool is not visible
Verify that the command is installed in the environment used by the MCP client, that the configuration points to the correct executable, and that the client was restarted. Run the command manually to reveal missing Python or package dependencies.
The result is truncated
Request a smaller first segment and then call fetch again with start_index set to the next offset. Do not repeatedly ask the model to “continue” without an offset; that can duplicate or skip text.
The Markdown is nearly empty
The page is likely client-rendered, blocked, or dependent on a cookie/region choice. Test the URL with a browser-backed implementation, wait for a content selector, and increase the navigation timeout. If a bot check remains, use a hosted service that documents proxy and browser support, subject to the site’s terms.
Images or tables are missing
Extraction may intentionally omit decorative elements or may not understand an unusual table layout. Use an option that includes images where available, or retrieve the rendered HTML and post-process it. For critical data, compare the Markdown with the page in a browser.

The process can reach private addresses
That is a documented security characteristic, not a connectivity bug. Put the server behind egress filtering, block RFC1918 and cloud-metadata ranges where appropriate, and require an allowlist for automated jobs.

Can MCP Fetch crawl an entire website?
The official Fetch tool is documented for fetching a URL and paging its response. Use a service that explicitly provides crawling and sitemap discovery when you need site-wide collection.
Should I use Markdown or raw HTML?
Use Markdown for readable agent context and raw HTML when you must preserve markup for your own parser or validation.
Is a browser fallback always better?
No. Plain HTTP is usually faster and simpler for static pages. Use a browser only when rendering, interaction, or access controls require it.
Can I fetch authenticated pages?
Only if your chosen server and client support the required headers or cookies and you have permission to access the content. Review credential handling before sending secrets.
