To extract a cURL request in Chrome, open DevTools before the action, record the request in Network, then right-click it and choose Copy → Copy as cURL. Paste the generated command into a terminal or editor, remove credentials before sharing, and replace short-lived cookies or tokens before replaying it later.
Extract a cURL request from Chrome
Chrome can turn any recorded network request into a shell command. The reliable sequence is:
- Open the page in Chrome.
- Open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+J (Windows/Linux) or Command+Option+J (macOS), then select the Network panel.
- Reload the page or repeat the exact click, form submission, login, or API action that you want to capture.
- Locate the request in the Network table.
- Right-click the request, hover over Copy, and select Copy as cURL.
- Paste the command into a terminal, text editor, or API client.
Opening DevTools first matters: the Network panel records traffic while DevTools is open. If the request happened before you opened it, repeat the action after opening Network.
Find the exact request before copying
A busy page can generate dozens of documents, scripts, images, analytics calls, and API requests. Filtering before copying prevents you from exporting the wrong item.

Use request-type filters
In Network, choose a category such as Fetch/XHR for JavaScript API calls, Doc for the main page navigation, or another resource type that matches the operation. If the category buttons are hidden, use the filter controls at the top of the panel.
Search by text
Enter part of the endpoint, a distinctive path, a domain, or text visible in the request name. Search narrows the table while preserving the original request details.
Confirm the request details
Select the candidate and inspect its Headers, Payload, Response, and status information. Check the request URL, method, query string, and whether it is the call caused by your action rather than a background request. For a POST or other body-bearing request, confirm that the payload appears in the details pane before copying.
Keep the request available
Network entries can disappear when you navigate or clear the panel. Enable Preserve log when the action causes a page change or redirect. Clear the log immediately before repeating the action if you need to make the target request easier to identify.

Copy one request, a filtered set, or every request
Chrome provides several export choices under the request’s Copy menu:

For a single API call, use Copy as cURL. For a multi-step flow, filter first and use Copy all listed as cURL so the clipboard contains only the relevant set.

Paste and run the generated command safely
Paste into a text editor before executing. A copied command can contain cookies, authorization headers, CSRF tokens, signed URLs, personal data, and request bodies. Treat it like a credential until you have inspected every header and argument.
Run it in a terminal
After reviewing and, where appropriate, redacting secrets, paste the command into your shell. Keep the command on one line if your shell does not interpret Chrome’s line continuations correctly. If the command contains shell-sensitive characters, quote values exactly as Chrome copied them.

Replace temporary values with environment variables rather than committing them to source control. For example, change a copied authorization value to $API_TOKEN in a shell script and export that variable only in your local authorized test environment. Do not use a captured credential against a system you do not own or have permission to test.
Check the HTTP result
Add diagnostic flags only when needed. -i includes response headers; -v prints connection details and can expose secrets, so avoid posting verbose output publicly. Save a response with -o response.json when you need to inspect it without filling the terminal.
Why a copied cURL command may fail later
Chrome copies the request as it existed at capture time; it does not turn a browser interaction into a permanent API credential.
Expired or changed authentication
Session cookies, bearer tokens, signed URLs, and one-time codes can expire or be rotated. Obtain a fresh value through the application’s documented, authorized authentication flow and substitute it in the command.

Missing CSRF or browser state
Some applications require a CSRF token from a page, a matching cookie, or a sequence of requests. A command copied from only the final call may fail with an authorization or validation error. Capture the prerequisite request and reproduce the required order, or use the service’s official API instead.
Origin, referer, and header checks
Servers may validate Origin, Referer, user-agent, or custom headers. Chrome includes many of the headers present at capture time, but a header can become stale or be intentionally rejected outside the browser context. Keep only headers the API actually requires and test in an authorized environment.
Dynamic request bodies
A body may contain a timestamp, nonce, upload boundary, or data generated from an earlier response. Replaying the literal body later can therefore fail even when the URL and method are unchanged.
Bot checks and browser-only behavior
A site can challenge command-line clients, require JavaScript, or return different content to automated traffic. A copied request does not bypass those controls. Use an official endpoint or an approved integration rather than attempting to evade a protection mechanism.

- Review every
Cookie,Authorization, API-key, signed URL, and form field before saving or sending the command. - Replace secrets with clearly named environment variables in documentation and scripts.
- Revoke or rotate a credential if you accidentally posted it.
- Use a private channel and an approved storage location for authorized troubleshooting.
Chrome’s HAR export includes a sanitized mode that excludes sensitive information such as Cookie, Set-Cookie, and Authorization headers by default. Export with sensitive data only when the recipient and storage location are trusted. A sanitized HAR is safer for diagnosis, while a cURL command is usually faster for replaying one request.
cURL versus fetch, PowerShell, and HAR

Choose the format that matches the next step: cURL for a focused command, fetch or Node.js fetch for application code, PowerShell for a Windows script, and HAR for a complete diagnostic package.

Import the copied cURL into Postman
When a terminal is not the most convenient place to inspect a request, Postman can import a single cURL command. Copy the request from DevTools, open Postman, choose its import option, paste the cURL text, and confirm the generated request. Review and replace cookies, authorization values, and other temporary fields before sending. Postman is useful for organizing requests into collections, changing parameters interactively, and sharing a cleaned request with a team.
Troubleshooting checklist
The request is not in Network
- Open DevTools and Network before repeating the action.
- Reload or perform the action again.
- Clear restrictive filters and verify that recording is enabled.
- Check whether the call is made by a worker, an iframe, or a different tab.
There are too many matching requests
- Clear the log, enable Preserve log only if navigation requires it, and repeat once.
- Filter to Fetch/XHR or the resource type expected for the operation.
- Search for a distinctive endpoint fragment and verify the method and payload.
“Copy as cURL” is missing
- Right-click the request row itself, not an empty area or a header value.
- Expand the Copy submenu in the context menu.
- Make sure you selected a recorded request rather than a grouping label.
The command fails with 401 or 403
Refresh the authorized session, capture a new request, and replace expired cookies or tokens. Confirm that the endpoint permits the method and client you are using. Do not weaken security checks or reuse another person’s session.

The command returns a validation error
Compare the copied method, query parameters, content type, body, and CSRF-related values with the live request. A missing prerequisite call or a changed body is often the cause.
The shell reports a quoting or syntax error
Paste into a text editor, check line continuations and quotation marks, and use the output format intended for your shell. Chrome’s cURL output is generally suitable for a POSIX-style shell; PowerShell users can choose Copy as PowerShell instead.

Practical workflow for reliable captures
- Decide whether you need one request, a filtered sequence, or a full diagnostic archive.
- Open Network before the operation and clear or preserve the log according to whether navigation is involved.
- Filter by type and text, then verify URL, method, payload, and status.
- Copy the smallest useful format: one cURL command for replay, filtered commands for a sequence, or sanitized HAR for broader analysis.
- Redact secrets, replace expired values through an authorized flow, and document any required order of requests.
- Run the cleaned command in a controlled environment and record the response status and body.
This workflow separates extraction from authentication and debugging: Chrome supplies an accurate snapshot of the request, while you decide which values are safe, current, and appropriate to replay.

Can I extract a cURL command from an API call?
Yes. Capture the call under Network, select the matching Fetch/XHR entry, and use Copy → Copy as cURL. Verify the request body and authorization requirements before replaying it.
Does Copy all as cURL preserve the order of a workflow?
It exports the recorded requests, but the commands are still snapshots. Workflows that depend on a token or response from an earlier request may need variables and explicit sequencing when scripted.
Should I share a copied cURL command with support?
Only after removing cookies, authorization headers, API keys, signed URLs, and personal data. A sanitized HAR or a redacted command is safer than an untouched capture.
