For one visible table, copy and paste it into a spreadsheet. For a repeatable import, use Google Sheets’ IMPORTHTML, Excel’s Power Query web connector, or Python’s pandas.read_html. The right choice depends on how the page exposes its content; no one method works on every site. After importing, check the headers, row count, and sample values against the page before using the data.
Choose a method that fits the page and your workflow
Start with the least complicated method that can get the table reliably. Copy and paste is suited to a one-time task. Sheets and Excel are convenient when the result belongs in a spreadsheet. pandas is useful when the table needs to become part of a Python workflow.

These are different ways to access page content, not guarantees that every page can be imported. A page may not expose the content in a form a particular importer can use. If a method returns incomplete or unexpected results, inspect the page and look for a supported data or API option from that site.
Copy a visible table into a spreadsheet
- Open the page in a browser and locate the table.
- Select the table’s visible cells. If selecting the entire table is awkward, select a manageable range and check whether the selection includes all intended rows and columns.
- Copy the selection, open a spreadsheet, and paste into the starting cell.
- Compare the pasted headers and several values with the web page. Check the first and last rows as well as any rows where the page uses merged cells, footnotes, or multi-line text.
This is the lightest approach when you only need the current visible data. It may need repeating if the page changes. If the paste has unexpected column breaks or omissions, try selecting a smaller range or use an import method below. Import a table into Google Sheets
In a blank cell, enter a formula with the page URL, the content type table, and the table’s index. For example:

- Replace the example URL with the page URL.
- Set the second argument to
tablefor a table orlistfor a list. - Set the third argument to the desired index. Numbering starts at 1.
- Check the imported headers and rows against the page. If Sheets returns a different table, try the next index.
Table and list indices are counted separately: the first table is table 1, while the first list is list 1. Do not assume a page’s first visible item is necessarily the first importable table. The function’s syntax and supported query values are documented in Google Docs Editors Help.
Import and transform a table in Excel Power Query
In Excel, the web connector can preview page content and present detected tables in Navigator. The precise interface may vary with Excel edition and update state. Microsoft describes the newer Web connector as available as part of an Office 365 subscription.

- Open the Data tab and choose From Web.
- Enter the web page URL and connect.
- In Navigator, inspect the detected tables and preview their contents. Select the one that matches the page rather than relying on its position or name alone.
- Choose Transform Data to review or change the data in Power Query, or choose Load to put the selection into Excel.
- Check the resulting columns and rows against the source page.
If Navigator does not detect a tidy table matching the content you need, Microsoft also documents Add table using examples: you provide sample values and Power Query uses them to identify matching content. See Microsoft’s example-based extraction guide.
Power Query Online has an additional requirement: Microsoft says its Web Page connector requires an on-premises data gateway for security reasons because it retrieves HTML using a browser control. The Web API connector is distinct and does not use that browser control. See the Power Query Web Connector documentation. This requirement concerns Power Query Online; do not treat it as a general prerequisite for Excel’s desktop web import.
Extract HTML tables with Python and pandas
pandas.read_html accepts a URL, HTML string, or file and returns a list of DataFrames—even when the page contains only one matching table. Inspect the list instead of assuming the first table is the one you want.

If you already have the HTML text, pass that string to read_html; it can also read from a file. pandas calls out parser and HTML-table parsing gotchas in its IO tools documentation, so unusual or malformed markup may need closer inspection.

Check the extracted data before relying on it
- Headers: Confirm the names and order match the source, including multi-level or blank headers.
- Row completeness: Compare the number of rows and inspect the beginning and end. Check whether the page divides results across pages or shows only a subset.
- Representative values: Compare several values from different columns, including dates, numbers, symbols, and text with punctuation.
- Formatting: Check that values have not been split, combined, or interpreted as a different type by the spreadsheet.
- Meaning: Preserve footnotes, units, and context from the page if they affect how a value should be understood.
A successful import only shows that a tool returned content; it does not establish that the result is complete or correct. Verify it before analysis or publication.

Troubleshoot common extraction problems
Sheets imports the wrong table
Check the one-based index in IMPORTHTML. Try another table index, and remember that list positions are counted separately from table positions.
Excel Navigator shows several plausible tables
Use the preview or Web View to inspect the actual contents before loading. If no detected table matches a consistently structured target, try Power Query’s example-based extraction.
pandas returns several DataFrames
Print each table’s dimensions and a preview, then select the matching DataFrame. Do not assume the first result is the target.

The import is empty, incomplete, or unavailable
Inspect the page and the chosen method’s output. The method may not be able to access the content in its current form. The documented workflows do not establish a universal fix for pages whose content is authenticated, dynamically rendered, or otherwise unavailable to an importer. Check whether the site offers a supported data or API option; then verify any result against the page.
The paste or import has shifted columns or unexpected values
Compare the result with the source, paying attention to multi-line cells, footnotes, merged layouts, and values that resemble dates or numbers. For a manual copy, select a smaller range; for Power Query, inspect or transform the preview before loading.
