Google Sites does not document a built-in dark-mode switch for visitors. The supported way to give a published site a dark appearance is to create a custom theme, choose a dark palette, check every text and navigation element for readability, and publish the changes. A separate Chrome extension can darken the editor interface, but its listing says it does not change the published site.
What “dark mode” means in Google Sites
There are three different outcomes that are often described as dark mode:

Consequently, a dark custom theme is a fixed visual design. It should not be presented as an automatic switch that detects every visitor’s light or dark preference.
Before you change the design
Use a computer
The documented theme workflow is performed in Google Sites on a computer. Open the site you want to edit and make sure you have permission to change its design.

Decide whether you need a dark appearance or a per-visitor switch
If a consistent dark appearance is sufficient, a custom theme is the practical route. If your requirement is a button that lets each visitor switch between light and dark, the documented Google Sites theme controls do not establish that feature. Do not promise visitors a toggle based only on custom-theme settings.
Plan a small, readable palette
Pick a dark background and a light primary text color, then separate secondary text, links, buttons, and navigation with clearly distinguishable colors. Keep a light version of your palette available while you review pages; it makes low-contrast elements easier to spot.
How to create a dark custom theme
- Open the editor. On a computer, open your Google Site.
- Open Themes. In the right-hand panel, select Themes.
- Start a custom theme. Under Custom, choose Create theme, enter a name, and continue.
- Choose the palette. Select a starting palette, then use Customize colors to set the colors used by the site’s visual elements. Choose the fonts for the theme as well.
- Review the design. Check headings, body text, links, buttons, navigation, section backgrounds, and any other elements on representative pages. Replace colors that are difficult to distinguish.
- Finish creating the theme. Save or complete the custom-theme flow using the controls shown by Google Sites.
- Publish. Publish the site after the theme is complete. Editing the theme changes the draft; publishing is what updates the live site.
Google’s help for redesigning sites documents custom themes, color controls, fonts, navigation, and publishing. It does not provide dark-mode-specific accessibility measurements, so readability must be checked across your own pages and content.
Make the dark design readable
Check every text type
Do not test only the homepage title. Review body paragraphs, headings, captions, link text, button labels, navigation items, footer text, and text placed over images. A color that looks clear in a large heading can be hard to read in small metadata or a footer.

Check interactive elements
Links and buttons should remain visually distinct from ordinary text and from the dark background. Open menus and navigation states, not just the default page view. If a component inherits a color that is too dim, assign a specific color in the custom theme.
Check images and embedded content
Dark pages can make bright images appear harsher and can expose white margins around graphics. Inspect pages with images, documents, maps, or other embeds and adjust the surrounding section colors or image treatment where the editor permits it. The custom-theme documentation does not guarantee that every embedded item will adopt your palette.
Review different viewport sizes
Use Google Sites’ preview and then open the published URL at desktop and mobile widths. Navigation, buttons, and text wrapping can change at smaller widths, revealing contrast or legibility problems that are not obvious in the editor.
Preview, publish, and verify the live site
- Use the editor’s preview to inspect the dark theme on more than one page.
- Confirm that the page title, navigation, links, buttons, and footer use the intended colors.
- Publish the changes.
- Open the published URL in a separate browser tab. If possible, check a private window or a browser where you are not signed in, so you see the visitor-facing result rather than an editor view.
- Recheck pages with long text, forms, images, and embeds after publishing. Fix the theme, publish again, and repeat until the live result matches the intended design.

Use the option that matches the place where you want the change to appear.

The extension is therefore not a substitute for publishing a dark custom theme. Install an editor extension only if you want to change your own editing experience.
Why visitors may still see the old appearance
The changes were not published
Theme edits remain in the editor until you publish. Return to the site editor, confirm the dark colors are present, and select Publish.
You are looking at the wrong URL
Google Sites has an editing address and a published address. Copy the URL from the published site and test that address in a separate tab or private window.
An extension changed only your editor
If you installed a dark/light extension and the live site is unchanged, that matches the extension listing’s stated scope. Use a custom theme for the visitor-facing design.

One element did not inherit the expected color
Return to Themes, edit the custom theme’s colors, and inspect the specific text, link, button, or navigation element. Then preview and publish again. Theme customization does not remove the need to inspect individual page content.
The dark palette is hard to read
Choose lighter text or a clearer link and button color, and test the result on every page type. The Google instructions reviewed do not specify a universal dark-mode contrast score; judge the actual content rather than assuming a palette is accessible because it is labeled dark.
