To embed an interactive PDF viewer on a web page, register the page’s domain for an Adobe PDF Embed API client ID, load Adobe’s viewer SDK, create a container, then initialize AdobeDC.View and call previewFile(). Adobe describes the Embed API as unlimited and free; it is separate from Acrobat Services APIs that have their own transaction terms.
What you need before embedding a PDF
- An Adobe PDF Embed API client ID registered for the domain where the viewer will run.
- A page with a container element for the viewer.
- A PDF that the deployed page can access, either by location or by supplying file content.
Adobe checks the client ID’s registered domain after the first page renders. An invalid ID or a domain mismatch blocks the preview. Adobe’s setup guide describes PDF content as a location or a file promise resolving to an ArrayBuffer. Verify that the PDF is actually reachable in your deployment environment; the cited setup material does not establish specific CORS, authentication, security-header, or browser-support requirements. How to embed a PDF with Adobe: the basic implementation
1. Register your website and get a client ID
Create PDF Embed API credentials in Adobe’s developer tooling and register the website domain that will host the viewer. Use the client ID for that registered domain. Test on the actual deployment hostname as well as any development hostname you intend to use; a domain mismatch prevents the preview.
2. Add a viewer container
Put a uniquely identified element where the PDF should appear. For a sized-container experience, give it explicit dimensions so the viewer has space to render. Adobe also documents full-window, inline, and lightbox display modes; choose based on the page layout rather than treating every embed as a fixed-size panel.

3. Load the SDK and initialize after it is ready
The minimal flow is to load Adobe’s SDK, wait for adobe_dc_view_sdk.ready, create AdobeDC.View with the client ID and container ID, and call previewFile() with content and metadata. The following is a compact pattern; substitute your registered client ID, container ID, and reachable PDF URL:

If your application already has PDF bytes, Adobe also accepts a file promise resolving to an ArrayBuffer; consult the current technical reference for the exact promise shape and any environment-specific fetch handling.
4. Choose the presentation mode
Adobe lists full-window, sized-container, inline, and lightbox modes. The sample above reserves a sized container in the page. A full-window viewer may suit a dedicated document page, while inline or lightbox presentation can fit other interfaces. The Adobe landing page includes an example sized container with explicit dimensions.

Pick the right experience: viewing, annotations, and persistence
Decide whether readers only need to view the document, should be able to use the viewer’s annotation tools, or need your application to manage annotation data. These are different integration choices.

Read-only viewing
If visitors only need to read the PDF, keep the experience simple and do not enable annotation workflows unnecessarily. The viewer is an in-page presentation layer; it does not by itself create your application’s reviewer identity or storage system.
Viewer annotation tools and application APIs
Adobe documents configuration for showing annotation tools and separate APIs to import, create, delete, update, and export comments and markup. In the referenced annotation guidance, enableAnnotationAPIs and includePDFAnnotations are separate controls and are disabled by default. Turning on annotation APIs alone does not change the original PDF. When both controls are enabled, annotation changes can alter the PDF. Reviewer identity and saving comments
Adobe says applications can identify reviewers by name or email and persist annotation settings through custom callbacks. By default, comments identify reviewers as GUEST. If reviewers need recognizable identities or comments must survive across visits, your application must provide the identity and persistence integration rather than assuming the viewer supplies a complete user-management or storage layer.
Track PDF activity with analytics or callbacks
The viewer can deliver events through callbacks. Adobe documents integration options for Adobe Analytics and Google Analytics 4 when those analytics products are already instrumented on the site. Configuration must match the analytics setup, such as a report suite ID for Adobe Analytics or a GA4 measurement ID. Adobe’s current integration documentation supports GA4, not Universal Analytics. Keep site-configured analytics distinct from Adobe’s product telemetry. Adobe says PDF Embed API collects product-use and performance information such as browser and operating-system type and version, device category, embed mode, file size and page count, rendering and download performance, and the webpage URL. Adobe says it does not store user-generated content and does not share that content with its servers. Review Adobe’s current documentation and your organization’s privacy requirements when deciding how to configure analytics.
Is Adobe PDF Embed API free?
Adobe’s current pricing page describes PDF Embed API access as unlimited at no charge. The same page separately lists a free tier of 500 document transactions per month for the Acrobat Services API family and paid plans for higher-volume or multi-product use. Those transaction terms apply to PDF Services and related APIs, not the embedded JavaScript viewer. Check the Adobe pricing page for current product terms.
The product boundary matters if your workflow goes beyond displaying a PDF. Adobe distinguishes PDF Embed API, for in-page viewing and collaboration, from services for manipulating, extracting, generating, or accessibility-tagging PDF documents. A viewer embed is not a substitute for a document-processing API when your application needs those operations.

Troubleshooting common embed problems
The viewer refuses to preview the PDF
- Check the client ID: confirm it is valid and registered for the domain where the viewer is actually running. Adobe checks the registered domain after the first page renders.
- Check the PDF location: confirm the file URL is correct and the deployed page can access the PDF. The cited setup documentation does not establish a universal CORS or authentication recipe, so verify those details against your hosting configuration and Adobe’s current technical reference.
- Check the ready event: initialize only after
adobe_dc_view_sdk.readyfires, and confirm the SDK script loaded.
The viewer area is blank or unusably small
- Ensure the container ID passed to
AdobeDC.Viewmatches the element ID in the page. - Give a sized container explicit dimensions and ensure its parent layout does not collapse it.
- Confirm the PDF URL returns the intended file in the same deployment context, rather than a login page, error page, or inaccessible resource.
Comments do not appear in the downloaded or original PDF
Check the distinction between enableAnnotationAPIs and includePDFAnnotations. Enabling APIs alone does not modify the original PDF; Adobe documents that changes can alter the PDF when both controls are enabled. Also ensure your application implements the persistence behavior required by its workflow.

Analytics events are missing
- Verify the chosen integration is already instrumented on the site and that its report suite ID or GA4 measurement ID matches the configuration.
- For Google Analytics, use the GA4 integration documented by Adobe; the current guidance does not support Universal Analytics.
- If automatic collection is disabled, use the documented callbacks and route the events your application needs.
