To convert a screenshot to text, open it with a tool that has optical character recognition (OCR), select the words it recognizes, and copy them into the app where you need them. On iPhone or iPad, use Live Text in Photos; on Windows, use Text actions in Snipping Tool; on Mac, use Copy Text in Photos; and for supported photo workflows, use Google Lens. Check the result against the image—especially names, numbers, punctuation, and line breaks—before relying on it.
What converting a screenshot to text means
A screenshot is an image, so its visible words are not automatically selectable like text in a document or webpage. OCR—optical character recognition—identifies text in an image so you can select, copy, or otherwise use it. Current tools from Apple, Microsoft, and Google provide ways to do this in their supported workflows.
The basic process is the same across devices: open or capture the image, invoke the text-recognition feature, select the words or passage, copy it, and paste it into a destination such as Notes, a message, or a document. The exact control depends on the device and app. If you only need a few words, select just those; if the tool offers a copy-all option and you need the whole recognized passage, use it and remove anything irrelevant afterward.

Copy text from an image in Photos
- Open the screenshot in the Photos app.
- Touch and hold a word in the image. When text selection appears, adjust the selection handles to cover the passage you need.
- Tap Copy.
- Open the destination app, tap where the text should go, and choose Paste.
Apple’s published minimum for iPhone Live Text is iPhone XS or XR and later with iOS 15 or later. iPad support depends on the model and operating system; check Apple’s compatibility information for your iPad rather than assuming every iPad supports it. Apple describes Live Text as recognizing information in photos, videos, and images found online. Its support article, “Copy and translate text from photos on your iPhone or iPad,” was published May 5, 2026.

If text selection does not appear
- Check Settings > General > Language & Region and make sure Live Text is enabled, where that setting is available.
- Confirm that the iPhone or iPad model and operating-system version support the feature.
- Try a clearer image or crop closer to the text. Keep enough surrounding content to make columns, labels, or table relationships understandable.
- Touch and hold a specific word rather than an empty area of the image.
For text in a video, pause the video first. Apple specifies iOS 16 or later or iPadOS 16 or later for Live Text in video. Apple also documents Speak Selection for speaking Live Text, and provides copy and translation actions; translation is not available for all languages or regions.

Use Snipping Tool Text actions
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S and drag over the part of the screen you want to capture.
- Open the resulting snip in Snipping Tool.
- Select Text actions.
- Select the text you need and choose the copy control, or choose Copy all text for all recognized text.
- Paste the copied text into the destination app and proofread it.
Microsoft says text recognition in this Snipping Tool feature runs locally on the device: “All text recognition processes are performed locally on your device.” This describes the recognition operation; it is a useful distinction if local processing matters to your choice of workflow. Snipping Tool also documents a Quick redact action for email addresses or phone numbers. Review what you are sharing before sending an image or extracted text to someone else.
Convert a screenshot or photo with Google Lens
Google documents copying text from photos with Lens in the Google app on Android and iOS. For a supported image, open Lens, select the text it identifies, and use the copy action presented in the interface. Paste the result into the app where you want to use it. The specific entry point and controls can vary by app version, device, and the content being selected, so use the controls shown on your screen rather than relying on one fixed sequence.

Google also documents Lens in desktop Chrome for selecting content visible on a webpage. That is a different starting point from extracting text from an existing screenshot: if your goal is the visible webpage, use the supported Lens workflow for that content; if you already have a saved image, use the photo workflow. Google’s Lens guidance does not establish that every Lens workflow processes images in the same way, so do not assume a particular processing location from the fact that you use Lens.

- Open the image in Photos.
- Position the pointer over the text you want to copy.
- Control-click the selection and choose Copy Text, or press Command-C.
- Paste the text into your destination app.
Apple documents this workflow in “Use Live Text to interact with text in a photo on Mac.” Depending on the selection and context, the menu can also offer actions such as Look Up, Translate, web search, and sharing. Apple notes that translation is not available for all languages or regions.
Which method should you use?

Choose based on where the image is and which supported device you already have. If local processing is a deciding factor, Microsoft explicitly documents that behavior for Snipping Tool Text actions; do not generalize that statement to other tools. If you need translation or spoken output as well as copying, Apple documents related Live Text actions, while Google documents Lens image-text copying. These functions and entry points are not identical across platforms.

Make the copied text more reliable
No OCR result should be treated as a guaranteed, exact transcription. The official how-to pages cited here do not provide a relevant accuracy benchmark, so there is no sound basis for quoting a percentage or promising error-free recognition. Use OCR as a way to avoid retyping, then compare the output with the original wherever correctness matters.
- Start with a readable image. Use the original screenshot when available, not a smaller or blurred copy. If the screenshot is crowded, crop around the relevant passage.
- Retain context for structure. Do not crop away column headings, row labels, units, or nearby text that explains how a number should be read.
- Check high-impact details first. Compare names, email addresses, phone numbers, dates, prices, account identifiers, and other strings where one character changes the meaning.
- Inspect punctuation and formatting. Look for changed decimal points, commas, quotation marks, hyphens, and paragraph breaks. OCR may not produce the line wrapping or layout you see in the screenshot.
- Verify before consequential use. For a form, quote, record, or instruction, correct discrepancies against the image before submitting or forwarding the text.
For accessibility, Apple documents Speak Selection for Live Text. Microsoft Lens documentation describes an Immersive Reader read-aloud mode and TalkBack voice guidance during capture. Those are descriptions of features in Microsoft’s documentation, not a recommendation to install Lens on Android: Microsoft’s retirement notice says Android retirement began January 9, 2026, and support ended after February 9, 2026.

Do not treat Microsoft Lens for Android as a current general-purpose download recommendation. Microsoft says retirement began January 9, 2026, and support ended after February 9, 2026. If you need to extract text from an image on an Android device, Google documents photo text copying with Lens in the Google app. The availability and exact controls of that workflow can vary, so follow the interface on your device.

The text cannot be selected
Confirm that you are using a supported device and app workflow, and that the feature is enabled if it has a setting. Open the image in the relevant app rather than viewing it in a place that does not expose text actions. If selection still does not appear, try a clearer, tighter crop or another supported workflow on your device.

The result is incomplete or jumbled
Try a crop that includes the full passage and its headings, but excludes unrelated screen content. For tables or multiple columns, retain enough of the original image to distinguish which value belongs with which label. Compare the pasted output with the screenshot; do not assume its order or line breaks match the layout.
A word, number, or symbol is wrong
Zoom in on the corresponding part of the original image and correct the copied text manually. Pay particular attention to characters that look alike in a small image, punctuation in numbers, and symbols next to units or currency. If the text will be used in a consequential context, verify the entire passage, not just the character that first looked suspicious.
The option or button differs from the instructions
App versions, operating systems, device models, and starting image types can change the available controls. On iPhone or iPad, check Live Text compatibility and the setting at Settings > General > Language & Region. In Google Lens, use the controls shown in the Google app or supported Chrome workflow you are using. On a Mac, the documented Photos action is in the text selection’s control-click menu.
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit the text after copying it?
Yes. Once pasted into a text editor or document app, it is ordinary editable text. Keep the screenshot available so you can check and fix recognition mistakes.
Will copied text keep the screenshot’s exact layout?
Do not count on it. The documented workflows copy recognized text; the source guidance does not promise exact reproduction of columns, spacing, or line breaks. Preserve the image when layout itself matters.
