To convert HTML code to a PNG, render the markup in a browser engine and capture the rendered result. Saving the HTML text itself cannot produce a faithful image because CSS, fonts, images, JavaScript, and layout must be computed first. Puppeteer and Playwright provide direct browser screenshot APIs; Browsershot offers a higher-level PHP interface backed by Puppeteer and headless Chrome.
Choose the input you are converting
Your workflow depends on what you have:
- An HTML string: inject it into a new page with Puppeteer or Playwright.
- A local HTML file: navigate to a
file://URL, or read the file and set its contents. - A public URL: navigate to the URL and wait for the page to render.
In every case, the output is a screenshot of the browser-rendered page, not an image of the source code.
Convert an HTML string with Puppeteer
Puppeteer launches Chromium, creates a page, inserts your HTML, captures it as PNG, and closes the browser. Install it in a Node.js project first:

Capture a URL instead of an HTML string
Replace setContent with navigation:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'example.png', type: 'png' });Use a URL that your process is allowed to access. Pages that require authentication, block headless browsers, or load content only after interaction may need headers, cookies, clicks, or a deliberate wait.
Capture an element or the full page
A normal screenshot captures the current viewport. To capture one component, locate it and call its screenshot method:

Convert HTML to PNG with Playwright
Playwright is another browser automation option with Chromium support and the same basic render-then-capture model. Install it and its browsers:

Control dimensions, timing, and page state
Viewport and resolution
Set the viewport before capture so line wrapping and responsive breakpoints are deterministic. A larger deviceScaleFactor produces more physical pixels for the same CSS dimensions, useful for retina assets but at the cost of larger files and more memory.

Dynamic content and external assets
Fonts, images, scripts, and API responses can arrive after the initial HTML. networkidle0 is useful for pages that become quiet, but it is not a universal guarantee: analytics, sockets, or polling can keep a page busy indefinitely. For predictable pages, wait for a specific selector or use a bounded delay after the required element appears. Confirm that remote images and fonts are reachable from the machine running the browser.
CSS and JavaScript
Inline styles work immediately. External stylesheets and scripts require network access and correct relative URLs. If you load a local file, use absolute asset paths or a correctly configured base URL; otherwise the screenshot may show missing images or unstyled markup.
Output size and format
PNG is lossless and suitable for text, diagrams, and interfaces. Full-page and high-scale captures can become very large. If a downstream system has limits, reduce the viewport, scale, or content before capture rather than silently resizing a blurry image afterward.
Common failures and fixes
The image is blank or only partly rendered
- Wait for a meaningful selector, such as
await page.waitForSelector('#app'), before taking the screenshot. - Check browser logs and network access for failed scripts, fonts, or images.
- For a single-page application, wait until its loading state disappears instead of relying only on navigation completion.
Images or fonts are missing
- Verify every URL is reachable from the capture environment.
- Use absolute URLs when converting a local document.
- Allow cross-origin resources and confirm the server sends them with usable headers.
The full page is cropped
Use fullPage: true on the page screenshot. For a component, capture the element rather than guessing document dimensions.
Transparency does not work
omitBackground removes the browser default only. Remove page-level background colors, pseudo-elements, and opaque containers that intentionally paint the canvas.

Headless Chrome fails to launch
Install the browser binary required by your library, or configure the executable path for a system Chrome installation. In containers, missing shared libraries and sandbox restrictions are common causes; use the runtime’s documented container setup rather than adding arbitrary flags.

Fix the viewport, device scale, timezone, locale, fonts, and wait condition. Freeze animated content with CSS or JavaScript when a stable frame matters, and avoid capturing while a carousel or transition is moving.

Can I convert HTML without opening a visible browser window?

Will JavaScript-generated content appear in the PNG?
It can, provided the page is allowed to finish the relevant script and you capture after its content is present. A selector-based wait is usually more reliable than an arbitrary short delay.

No. PNG is a raster image. Use the original HTML for interactive content or choose PDF when a paginated document is the actual requirement.

Does a screenshot include content below the fold?
