To convert an HTML string to PDF in Java with wkhtmltopdf, use a Java wrapper to pass the HTML to the separately installed wkhtmltopdf command-line program. The wrapper does not include the renderer. Use wkhtmltoimage when you need an image, not a PDF: the two headless tools use Qt WebKit but produce different output formats. Because the upstream project is archived and its stable release dates to 2020, verify that it suits your deployment before adopting it.
What you need to convert an HTML string to PDF
The conversion involves two parts: Java code that prepares the HTML and invokes a wrapper, and the native wkhtmltopdf executable that renders it. The Java WkHtmlToPdf Wrapper maintainers say the executable must be installed and working; adding a Java dependency alone is not enough. The wrapper is a third-party project, not an official wkhtmltopdf product.
The wkhtmltopdf project describes wkhtmltopdf and wkhtmltoimage as headless tools built on Qt WebKit. The former creates PDFs; the latter creates image formats. Neither is a Java library. See the upstream project and its project home page.
Check whether wkhtmltopdf is appropriate
Treat wkhtmltopdf as legacy software, not as a renderer receiving regular upstream updates. The project identifies version 0.12.6 as its stable series, released June 11, 2020, and its GitHub repository has been archived and read-only since January 2, 2023. Those facts do not establish that a particular binary is safe or compatible with your operating system. Check availability, vulnerabilities, and compatibility in the exact environment where you will run it. The project’s downloads page and repository are relevant starting points.

The project identifies wkhtmltopdf as LGPLv3 open source. Review the precise license files for the binary, Java wrapper, native libraries, and any alternative before distributing them with an application. The project home page identifies the upstream license.
Convert an HTML string through a Java wrapper
1. Install and verify the renderer
Install a compatible wkhtmltopdf binary in the runtime environment. Ensure it is on the executable search path or configure its location as required by the wrapper version you choose. Then verify that the process running your Java application can execute it. Installation commands vary by operating system and packaging source; use a verified package or binary appropriate to your deployment rather than assuming the Java dependency installs it.
2. Add and inspect a wrapper dependency
Choose a Java wrapper and confirm its published Maven or Gradle coordinates, version, and compatibility before adding it. The wrapper’s repository documents the string-input pattern, but the information available here does not establish current artifact coordinates or version status, so no dependency declaration should be guessed. Consult the wrapper repository for its current instructions and exact API.
3. Prepare complete HTML
Pass a complete document rather than an unstructured fragment when you need predictable rendering. Include a character encoding declaration and the CSS required for layout. For example:

4. Configure output and run conversion
Use the wrapper’s documented API to supply the HTML string as a page, set the destination PDF and any options, then invoke conversion. Check the wrapper’s success or failure result. In production, capture diagnostic output and errors so that a failed native process is visible rather than silently treated as a valid PDF. The wrapper README describes passing a string as page input; its sample was not executed here, so confirm behavior and method names against your selected release.
5. Validate the generated PDF in the target environment
Test the actual output, not only a local development run. Check fonts, images and other local or remote assets, page size, margins, headers and footers, and any JavaScript-dependent content you rely on. Also test the wrapper and native binary inside the deployment image, under its network and filesystem permissions.
Security, concurrency, and operational limits
Do not render untrusted HTML without isolation
The wkhtmltopdf project’s downloads page warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” Treat HTML and scripts supplied by users as dangerous input. Sanitizing is not a substitute for application-appropriate isolation: run the renderer with restricted permissions and resources, and limit its access to files and networks according to your threat model. A Java wrapper does not make unsafe HTML safe. The warning is published on the official downloads page.

Confirm wrapper behavior under load
The Java wrapper maintainers note that their wrapper does not support concurrent PDF generations and describe timeout problems with some options. These are wrapper-specific cautions, not proof that every version behaves identically. Check the exact release and deployment before designing parallel conversion, timeouts, or job handling around it. If your application needs concurrent jobs, test that requirement explicitly instead of assuming the wrapper is thread-safe. See the wrapper documentation.
Plan for rendering and deployment failures
A successful Java call does not by itself prove that the PDF is complete or visually correct. Make conversion failures observable, validate representative documents, and test the exact fonts, assets, options, and binary used in production. Native executable availability and behavior can differ across deployment platforms; validate them before release.
When to consider another renderer
The wkhtmltopdf project’s status page suggests Puppeteer for pages dependent on dynamic JavaScript and suggests considering WeasyPrint or commercial Prince for controlled report generation. These are scenario-level suggestions, not a current comparative benchmark. Select a renderer by checking the integration model, required HTML/CSS/JavaScript behavior, print pagination, runtime and deployment requirements, concurrency and isolation, maintenance, and license or commercial terms. The project’s status page provides its guidance.
For a Java-focused library option, iText’s pdfHTML material shows a Java API example that converts HTML input to PDF. That example alone does not establish current licensing terms, supported HTML/CSS, or fit for a particular document. Review the current pdfHTML information and validate your requirements.

The wrapper cannot find wkhtmltopdf
Cause: the executable is not installed, is not executable, or is outside the path or configured location available to the Java process. Fix: install a compatible binary and verify its location and permissions from the same runtime environment. Check the wrapper’s instructions for configuring the executable.

Cause: the native process may have failed, timed out, or encountered an input or option problem. Fix: inspect the wrapper result and captured diagnostics; reproduce with a minimal complete HTML document and add styles, assets, and options incrementally.

Images, fonts, or styles are missing
Cause: an asset reference may not resolve from the renderer’s execution context, or the expected font may not be installed in the target image. Fix: verify asset paths and access in that environment and include required fonts and assets in deployment. Test the produced PDF there.
JavaScript-driven content is absent or incomplete
Cause: the page may depend on dynamic JavaScript behavior that this legacy renderer does not handle as needed. Fix: test the required page behavior; for strongly JavaScript-dependent pages, consider the project’s Puppeteer suggestion and assess it against your operational and licensing requirements.
Parallel jobs fail or options time out
Cause: the wrapper maintainers call out lack of concurrent-generation support and timeout issues for some options. Fix: confirm the behavior for your exact wrapper version, avoid assuming concurrent safety, and test timeout-sensitive options under production-like conditions.

Is wkhtmltopdf itself a Java library?
No. It is a headless command-line renderer. Java code typically calls it through a third-party wrapper, and the executable must be installed separately.
Can wkhtmltoimage create a PDF?
No. Use wkhtmltopdf for PDF output. wkhtmltoimage produces image formats.
Does the wrapper make wkhtmltopdf safe for user-provided HTML?
No. The upstream security warning applies to untrusted HTML and JavaScript regardless of whether Java invokes the renderer through a wrapper.
