Embedded editors do not share one appearance API. Depending on the product, you may configure the editor with iframe URL or hash parameters, a JavaScript object, a postMessage handshake, CSS, or plugins. First identify whether you want to change the editor’s controls, the document or canvas inside it, or the space around the iframe; then check the vendor’s documented defaults, accepted values, and precedence rules.
Start by identifying what you want to change
“Appearance” can refer to three different layers. A theme or a hide-title option may change the editor interface, while a background option may apply to an embedded document or report. A border around the iframe itself belongs to the host page. A setting at one layer does not necessarily style the others.
- Editor chrome: toolbars, menus, title bars, save or exit controls, and the editor’s theme.
- Embedded content: a media figure, report, document, or canvas shown inside the editor.
- Host wrapper: the iframe’s width, alignment, spacing, and any frame or container styles on your page.
Before changing code, name the target layer and the owner of its styling. This prevents a common mismatch: changing an editor parameter when the visible border or alignment actually comes from the host page, or styling the host page when the setting belongs to the editor.
Choose the configuration channel the editor actually supports
There is no universal iframe appearance parameter. Vendors expose different controls and protocols; a parameter documented for one embed cannot be assumed to work in another. Check the specific product’s embed documentation, including whether its settings are URL-based, sent after load, or require an integration plugin.

| Editor or integration | Documented configuration channel | Scope and important limit |
|---|---|---|
| CKEditor 5 media embeds | Resize and style features, configured through editor plugins and toolbar options | Resize applies to the media widget. The integrator must style embeds on target pages for the intended display. |
| draw.io embed mode | Iframe URL parameters and, optionally, a parent-window configure message | Controls editor options and initialization behavior. Theme persistence and URL-parameter precedence matter. |
| Metabase static embeds | Parameters in the iframe URL hash | Documented appearance options include background, border, title, locale, and theme; these are not host-wrapper CSS. |
| Spck Embed | Iframe URL parameters | Parameters include theme and feature or project options such as files, preview, and project. |
| Qlik embeds | Web-component embed parameters | A documented UI option includes theme; this is not necessarily a raw-iframe parameter. |
For any option you plan to rely on, record its default, accepted values, precedence, persistence, and responsive behavior from that vendor’s documentation. If an item is not documented there, treat it as unknown rather than assuming a familiar value or behavior.
Configure CKEditor 5 media resizing and alignment
CKEditor 5’s media resize capability is not loaded by default. The integration must add the resize plugin and configure the toolbar. The documented options support percentage and pixel values through resizeUnit and resizeOptions. A resized embed is represented by the media_resized class and an inline width style.
The documented controls include corner resize handles, a resize dropdown, and standalone resize buttons. CKEditor says these controls meet WCAG 2.1 keyboard-navigation requirements. That is useful evidence for this feature, not a guarantee about keyboard behavior in every editor or every custom toolbar.
Alignment can be configured through CKEditor’s style feature, which provides block alignment and wrap-text alignment options. But alignment alone may appear to do nothing: a figure spanning the full available row has no spare horizontal space in which to shift. Alignment becomes visible after the figure is made narrower, either by resizing it or by applying appropriate CSS.

CKEditor’s documentation explicitly assigns the actual styling of media embeds to the integrator. Check the rendered embed on the target page, not just inside the editing interface. Confirm that your page styles support the expected width, alignment, and wrapping behavior.
Set draw.io options before or during initialization
draw.io’s embed mode uses an iframe, with URL parameters for options including libraries, themes, save and exit buttons, readiness messages, bounds return, JSON protocol, and whether to pause for configuration. The URL is therefore not merely a location: its settings can affect both visible controls and the editor’s startup sequence.
For the configuration handshake, set configure=1. The editor sends {event: 'configure'} to the parent window and waits for a message in the form {action: 'configure', config: obj} before creating the main application and sending the init event. Your parent page must be ready to receive the configure event and respond with the configuration object expected by the integration. Do not treat this as a generic message protocol that can be copied to unrelated editors.
Theme behavior has two important details. The selected theme is stored in browser local storage for the embedding site, so it may persist across later visits in that browser context. A fixed ui or sketch URL parameter takes precedence over the themes menu. If a user’s theme selection seems ineffective, inspect the iframe URL for an overriding value and consider the saved browser state.

For message-based configuration, include origin checks and handle the documented lifecycle deliberately: wait for the configure event, send the configure action, and then account for initialization. The embedding origin and the editor origin are part of the integration contract; do not assume that an iframe can be controlled by directly reaching into its document.
Use Metabase hash parameters for static embed appearance
Metabase documents static-embed appearance options appended to the iframe URL hash: background, bordered, locale, titled, and theme. The documentation gives examples for dark mode, removing the border, and retaining the original title. Use the exact documented parameter syntax and values for your embed type rather than substituting query-string syntax or CSS assumptions.
These settings belong to the embedded Metabase view. They do not replace styles for the wrapper around the iframe. If the report has the desired background but the surrounding page still has an unwanted frame or gap, inspect the host-page container separately.
Check feature visibility and theme options in other embeds
Spck Embed’s documented cosmetic iframe parameters include theme, files, preview, and project. That combination illustrates why “appearance” may overlap with which editor features are shown. Confirm each parameter’s supported values and defaults in Spck’s documentation before depending on a particular configuration; those values are not established here.

Qlik documents a theme UI option for its embed parameters, with breeze as an example value. Qlik’s documented approach is a web component, so do not assume that its option syntax transfers directly to an iframe URL. Use the embed mechanism for the component you actually placed on the page.
Make width and alignment work at responsive sizes
Alignment is a relationship between the embedded item’s width and its available container, not a magic property that always changes its position. If the item fills the row, left, center, and right alignment may render identically. Give it a narrower width before judging the alignment control.
- Set the embed’s width using the unit the editor documents. CKEditor 5’s resize feature documents percentage and pixel units.
- Check the result at the normal desktop container width and at narrower viewport sizes. A fixed pixel width can outgrow a small container; a percentage tracks the available width, but the appropriate value depends on the layout.
- Apply host-page CSS where the embed’s own feature does not control the rendered page. For CKEditor media, the integrator is responsible for suitable target-page styling.
- Test both the editor’s editing view and the published or embedded result. Editor-side appearance and host-page rendering are separate checks.
The available vendor documentation establishes that CKEditor resizing accepts percentages and pixels, but it does not establish one universally correct responsive value. Choose and test a width for your container rather than assuming an undocumented default.

- Defaults: record what appears when you omit each setting.
- Accepted values: use values the relevant vendor documents; do not infer that a theme name or boolean syntax is portable.
- Precedence: identify which source wins when URL parameters, menus, saved preferences, or runtime messages differ. In draw.io, fixed
uiorsketchURL parameters take precedence over the themes menu. - Persistence: test reloads and later visits. draw.io stores the selected theme in local storage for the embedding site.
- Lifecycle: for draw.io configuration mode, test configure and initialization messages in order; the main application is created after the configure action.
- Keyboard operation: test toolbar access and resize controls without a pointer. CKEditor documents keyboard navigation for its resize controls; do not generalize that claim to other embeds.
Troubleshoot the most common appearance problems
- Changing the theme has no effect: check whether the theme belongs to editor chrome or embedded content, confirm the embed type supports that control, and inspect for a higher-precedence setting. For draw.io, a fixed
uiorsketchparameter overrides the themes menu. - Alignment looks unchanged: the media or content may still fill the row. Narrow it first, then verify the target page’s styles for the embed.
- The resize controls are missing in CKEditor: the media resize feature is not enabled by default. Add the resize plugin and configure the toolbar.
- Appearance differs after reload: determine whether the editor persists a user choice or whether the embed URL fixes a value. draw.io stores its selected theme in local storage for the embedding site.
- The editor never reaches its configured state: if using draw.io’s
configure=1mode, confirm the parent receives the configure event and sends the documented configure action before expecting initialization. - The iframe looks right but the page does not: inspect the host wrapper and target-page CSS. Editor options do not necessarily style the page around the frame, and CKEditor media styling is the integrator’s responsibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can CSS inside my host page restyle a cross-origin editor’s toolbar?
Do not assume it can. The editor’s supported URL, configuration, or messaging interface defines what the parent page can control; use the vendor’s documented integration API rather than relying on access to an iframe’s internal document.
Should I test embed appearance only in the editor preview?
No. Check the rendered result on the target page as well, because host-page styling and editor appearance are distinct, and CKEditor specifically leaves target-page media styling to the integrator.
