Choose scrubs by measuring your body, checking the specific garment’s size chart, and testing how it feels when you reach, bend, sit, and walk. Measurements and movement are more useful than choosing a cut based on a label for your body shape: the right fit should provide coverage without pulling, riding up, digging in, or getting in the way of your work.
Start with measurements and the garment’s size chart
Use a flexible tape measure to record your chest at its fullest point, waist at its natural crease, hips around the fullest part of your hips and rear, and inseam along the inside of your leg. Compare those measurements with the chart for the exact brand and style. Your usual clothing size is only a starting point; scrub sizing and fit descriptions can differ between makers and garments.
If your measurements point to different sizes, follow the garment maker’s guidance rather than assuming all brands use the same rule. For example, Cherokee’s size chart says to choose by the hip measurement when the waist and hip measurements indicate different sizes. Cherokee describes its junior contoured fit as close to the body, missy relaxed as roomier with ease and coverage, and unisex as loose and spacious. Those labels describe Cherokee’s offerings, not universal sizing categories.

Try on the top and pants together if possible, then check how they behave during ordinary work movements. Reach overhead and forward, bend, sit, and walk. Look for pulling at the shoulders, chest, hips, thighs, or crotch; a waistband that digs in or slips; a top hem that rides up; or pant hems that catch on or interfere with your footwear.

- Top: It should cover you adequately while allowing your arms and shoulders to move freely.
- Pants: The waist should stay in place, and the seat and thighs should not restrict bending or sitting.
- Hem: Check the length with the footwear you wear at work, not just while barefoot in a fitting room.
Cherokee’s fit guide recommends balancing a semi-fitted feel with freedom of movement. A closer cut is not automatically a better fit, and extra room is not useful if it compromises coverage or gets in the way.
Understand stretch and fabric construction
Stretch terminology is not necessarily standardized across brands, so check the garment’s own fabric details. Cherokee describes its 2-way stretch as moving side to side, 4-way stretch as moving side to side and vertically, and 360-degree stretch as multidirectional movement with rebound. A stretch label describes the manufacturer’s construction, not a guarantee that the garment will feel comfortable on you.

Cherokee also associates woven polyester-spandex blends with a more structured feel and knit fabrics with a softer, stretchier feel. When comparing a pair, look at both the fabric composition and how the material responds when you move. Features such as adjustable pull-on, drawstring, or elastic waistbands; side or back panels; dolman or raglan sleeves; and mesh or knit inserts may affect comfort, but no feature suits every wearer or task.

For an example of manufacturer-listed specifications, Cherokee describes its FORM collection as an 86% nylon/14% spandex blend with 360-degree stretch, available in trouser, tapered, and jogger silhouettes. That is a product description, not an independent wear test; confirm current details on the item listing.

Compare rise, leg cut, and inseam
Waist size alone does not determine how scrub pants will fit. Compare the rise, leg shape, and inseam, then check the length against the shoes you wear on shift. Straight, tapered, jogger, and flare legs offer different shapes and interactions with footwear; a jogger is one option, not the best choice for every body or workplace.

These are approximate lengths in Cherokee’s size chart, not a promise that every Cherokee product comes in every length. Individual listings may offer fewer options or different inseams. For instance, Cherokee lists its Achieve men’s 5-pocket pull-on jogger, model CK-CK034, with a 30½-inch regular inseam and 28-inch short inseam. Check the specific product listing before choosing a length.

Check the waistband and pockets with your usual load
Adjustable drawstrings, elastic, and pull-on waistbands can help you find a comfortable feel, but the waistband should stay put without digging in when you sit, bend, and walk. If possible, try the garment with the items you usually carry in its pockets. Pocket count alone does not tell you whether a pair will work well: placement and load affect how the fabric hangs, and bulk can hinder movement. Cherokee’s fit guidance recommends checking that the top lies smoothly around its pockets and that filled pockets do not restrict you.
Use product examples as specifications, not fit guarantees
Cherokee lists the Achieve men’s CK-CK034 as a relaxed-fit, five-pocket pull-on jogger with an elastic waistband and internal drawstring, 80% polyester/20% spandex fabric, 360-degree stretch, and regular and short inseams. These are manufacturer listing specifications, not independent evidence of comfort or performance for every wearer. Confirm the live listing for current availability and details, and use the same measurement and movement checks you would for any other scrub.
