There is no single best WNBA team for every new fan. Choose based on the connection you want: a team you can see in person, players whose games you enjoy, a history or identity that interests you, and games you can actually watch where you live.
Start with the kind of connection you want
Think about what would make following a team enjoyable week to week. Attending games points you toward a nearby team; a player or style of play may draw you elsewhere. Team history can help you choose between close contenders, while broadcast access matters if most of your fandom will happen from home.
- Live connection: You want the option of going to games.
- On-court connection: You want to watch players or basketball that hold your attention.
- History and identity: You enjoy following a team’s place in the league and its story.
- Viewing access: You want a practical way to watch games from your location.
These are personal decision criteria, not a ranking of team quality. The WNBA’s official directory lists 15 teams for the 2026 season, including the expansion Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire. Each team was scheduled for 44 regular-season games in 2026. See the official team directory.

Should you choose a local team?
If attending games would make you more invested, start with the closest team. Check its current schedule, venue, and ticket information before deciding: team markets and venue plans can change, and a nearby listing alone does not guarantee that games are convenient for you.

If no team is realistically easy to see, do not treat geography as a requirement. A player, a team’s story, or the games you can watch may be a better basis for choosing.
Follow players and watch a few teams before settling
You do not have to commit to one team on day one. Follow a few teams or players, watch several games, and notice which matchups keep your attention. That is a practical way to test your interest, not a league rule or a claim that one team is objectively more entertaining.

If you are torn between teams, explore their stories and place in the league. The official WNBA history page is a starting point. For example, the Las Vegas Aces’ third championship over Phoenix is one history-related thread a new fan could follow. A title count can add context, but it cannot tell you which team will suit your interests now.

Check how you can watch games where you live
The WNBA’s 2026 national broadcast release reported 216 nationally distributed games, carried across partners including ABC/ESPN, Prime Video, CBS Sports/Paramount+, ION, NBC/Peacock/NBCSN, USA Network, and NBA TV. Which outlet carries a particular game depends on the schedule and your location; broadcast availability does not indicate team quality. Check the league’s 2026 broadcast announcement.
WNBA League Pass offers live and on-demand games, but availability varies by country and local market. In the United States, games nationally televised on the listed partner platforms are not available live on League Pass, though they are available there the following day. Local market restrictions may also apply. Before subscribing, check whether the specific games you want to see are available in your location and review the service’s current terms on the official League Pass page.

Account for changing team plans
Expansion and relocation plans can affect where a team plays, but future plans are not the same as current arrangements. The league announced approved expansion teams in Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia, planned to begin play in 2028, 2029, and 2030, respectively. Separately, NBA Communications reported a planned Connecticut Sun relocation to Houston in 2027; Mohegan Sun Arena is to remain the team’s home for the 2026 season. See the league’s expansion announcement and the NBA Communications relocation announcement. Verify current team schedules and venue details when making plans.

Quick Recap
A simple way to make your choice
- Shortlist by connection: Start with a nearby team if you want to attend games; otherwise begin with players, basketball, or team stories that interest you.
- Sample the league: Follow a few teams or players in the WNBA app or with WNBA ID, then watch several games.
- Check access: Look up where the games you care about are carried and whether League Pass restrictions apply in your location.
- Choose the team you want to keep following: If one team makes you curious about the next game, that is a stronger reason than a league-wide ranking or a championship count.
