First decide what you need to keep. A screenshot preserves how a page looked; a WordPress export preserves selected content; the Site Editor export saves theme design work; and a full-site backup preserves the files and database needed to restore a self-hosted site. These outputs are not interchangeable. Use the matching method below rather than treating “capture” as a single WordPress feature.
Choose the right way to capture a WordPress site

WordPress dashboard features and labels can vary by version, account permissions, and hosting setup. The Site Editor export documentation was updated on 2026-09-14 and mentions WordPress 7.1 in its change notes; check the current interface if your menu differs.
Export posts, pages, and other WordPress content
The built-in content export creates a WXR/XML file that can be imported into another WordPress site. WordPress documentation lists posts, pages, custom post types, comments, custom fields, taxonomies, and users among the content it can export. The resulting file is for content transfer, not a complete site backup.
- Sign in to the WordPress dashboard.
- Go to Tools → Export.
- Choose All content for a broad export, or select a content type and apply available filters, such as category, author, date range, or status.
- Select Download Export File and save the generated XML file where you can find it.
- On the destination WordPress site, open Tools → Import → WordPress and import the file. Review the result; importing content does not reconstruct the source theme, plugins, or entire site.
WordPress describes the download step plainly: “When you click the Download Export File button, WordPress will create an XML file for you to save to your computer.” See the WordPress Export Screen documentation.

What the content export leaves out
The standard export does not include the theme or plugins. WordPress Learn explains this limit in its content export and import tutorial. If the goal is a restorable copy or migration of the whole installation, use a backup or migration workflow that includes files and database rather than relying on WXR alone.
Export Site Editor templates and styles
If you changed a block theme in the Site Editor and want to save those design changes, use its theme export rather than Tools → Export. WordPress says the ZIP contains the theme, including updated templates, template parts, and style settings.
- In the dashboard, open Appearance → Editor.
- Open the three-dot menu beside Styles.
- Choose Tools → Export.
- Save the downloaded ZIP file.
This export is distinct from the WXR content file: it preserves Site Editor design work, not a full site’s content, plugins, and database. See the WordPress Site Editor export documentation.
Back up a complete self-hosted WordPress site
A complete backup needs both the site’s files and its database. Files include the WordPress installation and site assets; the database holds site content and settings. The WordPress Learn manual backup lesson treats them as separate components and recommends SFTP rather than FTP for manual file transfer, because SFTP encrypts credentials in transit.

- Choose a manual, hosting-provider, or backup-plugin workflow that covers both files and database.
- For manual file transfer, connect using SFTP with an SFTP client such as FileZilla or Cyberduck, as described in the WordPress lesson.
- Export or otherwise preserve the database as a separate backup component.
- Store both components safely and verify that the backup can be restored before relying on it.
WordPress Learn recommends backing up before core, plugin, or theme updates and before installing plugins. Its backup lesson describes the files-and-database approach. Hosts and plugins may provide different workflows; check their scope rather than assuming a single downloaded file contains everything.
Take a screenshot of a WordPress page
For a one-off visual record, use your browser or operating-system screenshot tool. A normal viewport screenshot captures only the visible area. For a long page, use a full-page capture tool that can scroll or otherwise capture below the fold. This produces an image, not a copy you can edit in WordPress or use to restore the site.
Capture a long page reliably
- Use full-page capture when you need content below the visible browser area; use a viewport capture when only the current view matters.
- Allow dynamic content to load. Lazy-loaded images or sections may not appear until they are brought into view.
- Prefer a tool that can scroll through the page to trigger lazy loading when needed. The capture-website project documents URL or local HTML input, full-page capture, device emulation, and scroll behavior for lazy-loaded content.
- Be cautious with exceptionally tall captures: the project documents a Chromium limitation that can cause content to repeat.

These are optional screenshot workflows, not WordPress requirements. Capture-website options and commercial software features may change over time.

Fix common capture problems
The export file is missing my design or plugins
That is expected from Tools → Export: it is a content export. Export Site Editor design work separately through Appearance → Editor → three-dot menu beside Styles → Tools → Export, and use a full backup workflow for a complete site copy.
The screenshot cuts off below the fold
You likely used a viewport capture. Switch to full-page capture in your browser or screenshot tool. If the page relies on lazy loading, use a capture method that scrolls through it or wait until the content has loaded.

Images or dynamic content are absent from a full-page shot
Some pages load content only after scrolling or after scripts finish. Give the page time, trigger lazy loading by scrolling, and recapture. A screenshot tool’s full-page mode does not guarantee that every dynamic element has finished rendering.

The full-page image repeats sections
Very tall screenshots can encounter a Chromium limitation documented by capture-website. Try capturing a shorter region or splitting the page into multiple captures.
I cannot find the Site Editor export option
Confirm that your site exposes Appearance → Editor and that you are using a theme and setup with the Site Editor. Menu availability can vary; consult the current WordPress documentation or your host if the route is absent.
I need to send technical details, not site content
Use Tools → Site Health → Info and its export control to copy technical information for support. This is diagnostic information, not a backup of content, design, files, or database.

Why do you need to export your site?
Choose the artifact based on the job: content transfer, saving Site Editor design changes, restoring or moving the full installation, or keeping a visual record. Each uses a different method and preserves different things.

Have you considered using a migration plugin?
A host or migration plugin may simplify a move, but confirm that its output covers the files and database you need and that you can restore it. A WXR content export alone is not a full-site migration.
Does WordPress export include my theme and plugins?
No. The standard Tools → Export content file does not include themes or plugins. Use the Site Editor export for the relevant theme design work, or a complete backup workflow for the full site.
How do I save a full-page screenshot of my WordPress site?
Use a browser or screenshot tool with full-page capture, and ensure the page has loaded below the fold, including lazy-loaded content. The result is an image rather than a restorable WordPress site.
