What a scrolling screenshot captures
A normal screen capture records only the pixels currently visible in the browser viewport. A scrolling, full-page, or long-page screenshot renders the content below the fold and combines it into one image. It is useful for design reviews, bug reports, documentation, archiving, and sharing a page that would otherwise require many separate screenshots.
The result is usually a tall PNG, JPEG, or WebP. Very long pages can produce large files, and pages with animations, lazy-loaded media, fixed headers, or internal scroll panels need extra preparation.
Capture a full page in Firefox
Firefox has the quickest no-install workflow and can either save the image or copy it to the clipboard.

- Open the webpage you want to capture.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and select Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose Save full page.
- Review the preview, then download the PNG or choose the clipboard option if you want to paste it into another application.
If the context menu is attached to a link, image, or form control, click a blank part of the page first so Firefox opens the screenshot command rather than that element’s menu.
Capture a full page in Microsoft Edge
Edge calls its built-in tool Screenshot or Web Capture, depending on the current interface.
- Open the page in Edge.
- Right-click the page or open the browser menu and choose Screenshot or Web Capture. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Select Capture full page.
- Inspect the result. Edge lets you draw or highlight on the capture before copying or saving it.
Microsoft notes that screenshot availability and functionality can vary by device type, market, and browser version. If a label or shortcut is missing, update Edge and check the browser’s current menu instead of assuming the feature has been removed.
Use Firefox Developer Tools for precision and repeatability
Developer Tools is useful when you need a delay for dynamic content, a fixed device-pixel ratio, a predictable filename, or a screenshot of one element instead of the whole document.
Enable the full-page screenshot button
- Open Firefox Developer Tools.
- Open the toolbox customization menu and find Available Toolbox Buttons.
- Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Click the new screenshot button in the toolbox to save the current page.
Run the Web Console command
For repeatable captures, open the Web Console and run:

Use a built-in command when you are looking at one page interactively. Use Developer Tools when timing, naming, resolution, or element targeting matters. Use an API when a script, CI job, service, or AI agent must repeat the operation.
Prepare the page before capturing
Full-page rendering is limited by what the page has actually loaded. Run through this checklist before blaming the screenshot tool:
- Scroll once through long pages. Some images and cards are lazy-loaded only after they approach the viewport. Scrolling gives them a chance to render before you capture.
- Wait for network-loaded content. Dashboards, charts, comments, and consent systems may populate after the initial HTML appears. Capture only after the visible layout has settled.
- Finish interactive states. Close menus, hover tooltips, chat launchers, and modal dialogs unless they are intentionally part of the evidence.
- Check fixed and sticky elements. A header that remains fixed may appear repeatedly or cover content in a stitched image. If the overlap is unacceptable, use a selector capture or temporarily hide the element with your browser’s inspection tools.
- Identify internal scroll panels. A page can have a short document with a tall scrolling panel inside it. A browser’s full-page command generally follows the document, not every nested panel; target the panel element when possible.
- Consider privacy. Sign out or remove personal data before saving a screenshot that will be shared. Browser captures include whatever is visible in the rendered page.
Troubleshoot an incomplete or incorrect capture
Images or cards are blank
The most common cause is lazy loading: the resource was not requested until its section entered the viewport. Scroll through the page, wait for the images to appear, and capture again. A slow connection or a script error can produce the same symptom, so verify that the page itself displays the content before retrying.
The screenshot stops at the visible viewport
Make sure you selected Save full page in Firefox or Capture full page in Edge. In Firefox Developer Tools, include --fullpage; the ordinary screenshot button can save only the current viewport.

A menu, animation, or spinner is frozen in the image
Let the page settle before capturing. For repeatable timing, use Firefox’s --delay option. If the animation never finishes, pause it with page controls or capture after the desired state is visible.
Only one section should be captured
Use Firefox Developer Tools with --selector and a CSS selector for the target element. This is more reliable than cropping a very tall image afterward because the browser renders the selected element directly.
An internal panel is missing its lower content
The panel may scroll independently from the document. Inspect the panel, identify its selector, and capture that element. If the panel is generated by a complex application, you may need to expand it or use the application’s own export command.
Edge’s command is unavailable
Feature names and availability depend on the Edge version, device type, and market. Update the browser, try the right-click menu and the browser menu, and use Firefox’s built-in command or Developer Tools as a fallback.
The output is too large to share
A full-page image can be thousands of pixels tall. Save a lossless PNG for documentation, or choose JPEG/WebP and resize it for ordinary sharing. For a document intended for printing, generate a PDF instead of forcing a very tall raster image.
Automate captures without clicking through a browser
For a scheduled job, visual regression workflow, or batch of URLs, an HTTP screenshot service avoids desktop state and makes the request part of your code. Keep the page URL, viewport, wait conditions, and output settings in configuration so another run can reproduce the same capture.

Local browser capture is immediate for a page you already have open, but it depends on your machine, browser version, login state, extensions, and network. Developer Tools improves repeatability by making delay, selector, filename, and pixel ratio explicit.
An API is easier to run on a schedule or across many URLs. Use a wait condition that represents the content you need rather than an arbitrary long delay, and use caching when the page does not change frequently. For large batches, bulk capture and asynchronous jobs avoid keeping a terminal or browser session open. Inspect the verdict and billing headers so a failed render is not mistaken for a valid screenshot.

Why does a full-page image look different from what I saw while scrolling?
Full-page tools may render sections in a capture pass rather than reproducing every moment of manual scrolling. Content that changes with time, viewport position, or interaction can therefore appear in a different state. Freeze the desired state and wait for network activity to finish before capturing.
Should I capture the entire document or a CSS selector?
