The browser supplies the interface and optional previews, while a server or upload service must enforce limits, verify the file, store it safely, and deliver it with the right content type. This tutorial builds the framework-neutral pieces and shows where a hosted widget can replace infrastructure.
1. Define the upload contract
Before writing markup, decide which formats, maximum dimensions, maximum byte size, authentication rules, and delivery behavior your application needs. Keep the allowlist narrow: for example, accept only JPEG and PNG if those are the formats your product displays. Document the limits next to the control so users know what will be rejected.
- Accepted formats: state the actual formats, not “all images.”
- Maximum size: enforce it in the browser for fast feedback and on the server as the authoritative limit.
- Optional dimensions: reject images that are too small, too large, or have an unacceptable aspect ratio.
- Access: decide whether each asset is private, authenticated, or publicly retrievable.
- Retention and removal: define how users or moderators can delete abusive or unwanted files.
2. Build the visible form
A file upload form must use multipart/form-data. The browser can send ordinary text fields in the same request. Use a real label, keyboard-accessible controls, and instructions that match server policy.

</form>The accept attribute filters the chooser but is not a security boundary. A user can submit a request directly, rename a file, or forge a browser-supplied type.

Client-side preview and progress
Previewing improves the experience but does not validate the upload. Use an object URL and revoke it when replacing the file. An XMLHttpRequest gives upload progress in browsers that support it.

});3. Validate on the server
Server-side checks are mandatory. Apply request and file-size limits before expensive processing, allowlist the formats your product needs, and inspect the file’s actual bytes. Do not trust the extension, the submitted filename, or the browser’s Content-Type; each can be spoofed.
Validation sequence
- Require the expected multipart field and reject missing or repeated fields if your application allows only one image.
- Reject requests exceeding your configured body and per-file limits.
- Read a trusted signature or decode the image with a maintained imaging library. A file that merely ends in
.jpgis not necessarily a JPEG. - Check dimensions, decompression limits, and malformed metadata to reduce resource-exhaustion risk.
- Optionally rewrite the image through an image library. OWASP’s guidance is: “Use image rewriting libraries to verify the image is valid and to strip away extraneous content.”
- Return a generic, useful error without exposing filesystem paths or parser internals.
Keep validation rules in one place so the HTML help text, API responses, and tests do not drift. Rate-limit anonymous uploads and require authentication when the product cannot safely moderate public submissions.

4. Store files without trusting user input
Never use a submitted path as a destination. Generate an opaque identifier with a cryptographically secure random source, choose the extension from the detected format, and retain the original name only as display metadata when there is a clear need.

If files must be public, serve them through a controlled route or object-storage policy rather than exposing an arbitrary directory. Set the response Content-Type from the detected format, not from a request parameter. Add authentication checks for private assets and a deletion or abuse-report path for public ones.
5. Deliver uploads safely
A delivery endpoint should accept an asset identifier, look it up in your database, verify access, and stream only the associated object. Prevent path traversal by never concatenating a user-provided filename into a filesystem path. Add cache headers only when the URL is immutable or versioned. If you transform images, bound the requested width and height and cache the result.

6. Test the failure paths
- Oversized file: confirm the request is rejected before storage.
- Renamed executable or text file: confirm content inspection rejects it.
- Malformed image: confirm decoding or rewriting fails safely.
- Valid image with a misleading name: confirm it is stored under the generated identifier.
- Unauthenticated request for a private image: confirm a non-success response.
- Interrupted upload: confirm temporary data is removed and no partial object is published.
- Concurrent uploads: confirm identifiers do not collide and database records match objects.
7. Custom backend versus a hosted upload widget

“Unsupported media type”
The server detected a format outside your allowlist or could not decode the bytes. Check the exported format and send a real JPEG, PNG, or WebP rather than changing only the filename.

“Payload too large”
Align the reverse proxy, application server, and upload-library limits. Tell users the limit before submission, but retain the server-side limit as the authority.
The preview works but the upload fails
Previewing reads a local object and proves nothing about server acceptance. Inspect the network response, multipart field name, authentication token, and server logs; do not weaken validation to match the preview.
Images download instead of displaying
Serve the detected format with the matching Content-Type. Also check that your delivery route is not forcing an attachment disposition.

Uploads disappear after deployment
Ephemeral application disks are not durable storage. Use persistent storage or a separate object-storage host, and keep the database reference and object lifecycle synchronized.

Can HTML alone securely store an image?
No. HTML can collect and submit bytes, but a backend or upload service must validate, store, and serve them.
Should I preserve the user’s filename?
Keep it as optional display metadata only. Use a generated identifier for the actual storage name.
