A web crawler audit shows what a crawler can discover and inspect on your site; it does not prove that Google has crawled or indexed every page. Start by defining the URLs and sections you want to audit, crawl them with a tool such as Screaming Frog SEO Spider, then compare the results with your XML sitemap and validate important Google-specific questions in Search Console.
What a crawler audit can—and cannot—tell you
A crawler follows links or processes a supplied URL list, then reports what it can access and extract under its configuration. It can help uncover broken links, redirect patterns, missing or duplicate page elements, directive and canonical issues, orphan pages, and URL patterns worth investigating. Screaming Frog describes its SEO Spider as technical SEO audit software and documents both site crawling and XML sitemap analysis: SEO Spider.
Keep the evidence types separate. A third-party crawler reports its own access and observations; Google Search Console provides Google-specific diagnostic information. A crawl of your website is not proof of Google’s crawl history or index state. For high-impact conclusions, use the crawler to locate candidates and Google tools to verify the questions that only Google data can answer.
Define the audit scope before crawling
Write down the host, subdomains, sections, and page groups in scope. Decide whether you want to discover URLs by following links or audit a known set of URLs. Also identify other URL sources you will compare against, particularly the XML sitemap and any important page inventory maintained by your team.

Spider mode: discover pages through links
Use a normal Spider crawl when you want the crawler to start from a page—often the homepage—and follow the same-subdomain HTML hyperlinks it discovers. This helps reveal the site’s linked structure and pages that are reachable through it. Screaming Frog’s getting-started guide describes entering a starting URL and running a Spider crawl: SEO Spider getting started.
List mode: audit a known URL set
Use List mode when the audit needs a defined set, such as URLs from a sitemap, a migration spreadsheet, or a selected group of landing pages. Screaming Frog documents pasting or uploading URLs for a List-mode crawl in its getting-started guide. This mode answers questions about the supplied set; by itself it does not show whether those URLs are linked from the rest of the site.
Set limits and exclusions for expansive sites
Before starting a large or dynamic site, consider whether query parameters, faceted filters, calendars, search results, or other patterns could create many low-value URLs. Exclude or limit patterns only when they fall outside the audit’s purpose; an exclusion can hide a real issue if applied too broadly. There is no universal crawl limit that fits every site, so choose a scope that matches the sections and page types you need to inspect.

Run the crawl and review evidence, not just issue counts
- Enter the starting URL or load the intended URL list. Confirm the host and mode reflect the scope you recorded.
- Run the crawl and watch its progress. Screaming Frog describes real-time crawl progress; large or dynamic sites may take longer as the tool discovers URLs.
- Review URL-level details and representative examples. Inspect status, directives, canonicals, internal links, and the issue categories relevant to your audit. The software’s settings and crawl behavior affect what it can observe.
- Group findings by pattern and template. Determine whether an issue affects a shared template or a handful of individual pages. Check several affected URLs before proposing a sitewide change.
- Record evidence and an owner. For each actionable finding, note sample URLs, the affected page group, the observed pattern, the proposed change, and who can implement or validate it.
An alert is a lead for investigation, not automatic proof of user harm or search impact. Confirm that the affected URLs matter, that the tool interpreted the page as intended, and that the proposed fix addresses the actual pattern.

Check crawlability and indexability separately
Google explains that robots.txt tells crawlers which URLs they can access and is used mainly to manage crawler traffic or avoid crawling unimportant or similar URLs. Google also cautions that robots.txt is not a dependable way to keep a page out of Search: a blocked URL can still be indexed if Google finds it through other links. When the goal is to prevent a page from appearing in Search, use a noindex directive or password protection, as appropriate, rather than treating a robots.txt block as an exclusion directive. This distinction also affects your audit. If robots.txt blocks a URL, a crawler may be unable to inspect the page’s content and directives. The crawler’s inability to fetch a page does not establish what its index status is. Check the intended access and exclusion behavior using the relevant configuration and Google-specific diagnostics rather than recommending a block as a substitute for noindex.

Compare crawler discoveries with the XML sitemap
Treat your sitemap as a declared URL set and compare it with both the link-discovery crawl and the inventory of pages your team considers important. Screaming Frog’s XML sitemap analysis describes identifying missing, non-indexable, and orphan pages: XML sitemap analysis.
- In the sitemap but not found through internal links: check whether the page is intentionally standalone or has become difficult to reach through the site’s navigation and contextual links.
- Linked and important but absent from the sitemap: confirm whether the sitemap is meant to include that page type and whether the omission is intentional.
- In the sitemap but non-indexable according to the crawl: investigate the page’s status, canonical, and directives, then determine whether the sitemap entry matches the intended search behavior.
A sitemap helps tell Google about URLs; submission does not guarantee that Google will crawl a URL immediately or include it in search results. Use the comparison to find inconsistencies, not as proof that Google has processed every listed page. Google explains sitemap discovery and its limits in the sitemap overview.

When the question is whether Google has crawled or indexed a page, supplement the third-party crawl with Search Console. Google’s troubleshooting guidance points to Crawl Stats for Googlebot crawl history, URL Inspection for page-level checks, and robots.txt review when diagnosing crawling problems: Troubleshoot crawling and indexing.

- For site-level crawl history: consult Crawl Stats in Search Console rather than inferring Googlebot activity from a third-party crawl.
- For an individual URL: use URL Inspection to check Google’s page-level information and investigate the reported status.
- For a suspected access problem: review robots.txt and the relevant page configuration alongside the Google-specific diagnostics.
If you request recrawling, treat it as a request, not a command. Google says a recrawl request does not guarantee immediate crawling or inclusion in search results; its recrawl guidance explains the process and its limits.

A useful audit report lets a developer or content owner reproduce the issue and verify the fix. For each finding, include:
- a representative sample URL and the pattern or template involved;
- the affected page group and the evidence observed in the crawl;
- the likely consequence, stated in proportion to the evidence;
- a specific recommended change and the person or team responsible;
- the validation method, such as a recrawl, a sitemap comparison, or a Search Console check.
Investigate sitewide template or directive patterns before isolated low-impact findings, but confirm their reach before calling an issue sitewide. A small number of examples may reveal a shared cause—or may only look similar—so check the scope before assigning impact.

Choose a crawler based on the audit you need
There is no evidence here for naming one crawler universally best. Compare tools against the job and the controls your team needs. Screaming Frog’s official documentation establishes Spider and List modes, review of directives and canonicals, and XML sitemap analysis, but does not provide an independent vendor comparison.
- Scope: can it discover linked pages and separately process a supplied URL list?
- Rendering: what happens when JavaScript rendering is needed, and can you control the crawler’s behavior?
- Directives and structure: can you inspect robots rules, meta or response-header directives, canonicals, status codes, and internal links?
- Sitemaps and orphan pages: can you compare sitemap URLs with crawl findings and identify pages with no internal links?
- Workflow: do export, crawl comparison, integrations, scale, and cost fit the audit and reporting process?

Does a successful crawler audit mean Google has indexed every page?
No. A crawler reports what it discovered and inspected under its own configuration. Use Search Console and URL Inspection for Google-specific crawl and index diagnostics.
Can a robots.txt rule keep a URL out of Google Search?
Not reliably. Google may index a blocked URL if it finds it elsewhere. Use noindex or password protection when exclusion is the goal.
Does adding every page to an XML sitemap guarantee indexing?
No. A sitemap helps Google discover URLs, but submission does not guarantee crawling or inclusion in results.
