Add a screenshot on a computer
The usual method is to upload an image file saved on your computer. Google Docs Editors Help describes this option as inserting an image saved on your device. It works well when you already have the screenshot as a PNG, JPEG, GIF, or another image file supported by Docs.
- Open the document in Google Docs.
- Click in the document at the point where you want the screenshot to appear. The image will be inserted at that position.
- Choose Insert > Image.
- Select Upload from computer.
- Find and select the screenshot file, then click Insert or Open in the file picker.
The screenshot should appear in the document. If you want it between two paragraphs, place the cursor at the relevant break before uploading. If you want it near a particular sentence, click in that paragraph first; you can adjust its layout after insertion.
When the screenshot is not saved on your computer
The Image menu also offers other ways to insert a picture. Choose the source that matches where the image is, rather than downloading a second copy unnecessarily:

Google Workspace Updates described image insertion by drag-and-drop and copy-and-paste as easier ways to add images in Docs, Slides, and Drawings. If a route does not work for a particular image or browser, use the upload option for a local file or select the image through Drive & Photos.
Insert a screenshot from an Android phone, iPhone, or iPad
Use the Google Docs app on the mobile device that has the screenshot. Google’s Android and iPhone/iPad instructions follow the same basic sequence: open the document, use Insert > Image, select an image source, and tap the screenshot or photo.
Android
- Open the document in the Google Docs app.
- Tap Insert, then tap Image.
- Choose where to get the image.
- Tap the screenshot or photo you want to add.
iPhone and iPad
- Open the document in the Google Docs app.
- Tap Insert, then tap Image.
- Choose where to get the image.
- Tap the screenshot or photo you want to add.
The exact source choices available can depend on where the screenshot is stored and what the app presents on your device. If you cannot find it in the picker, first make sure the screenshot is available in the location you choose, such as the device’s photos or files.
Copy and paste a screenshot into Google Docs
Yes. If the screenshot is already on your clipboard, click in the document where it belongs and paste. This can be quicker than saving the clipboard image to a file and uploading it. You can also copy an image from a web page or another app and paste it into Docs.

If pasting does not insert the image, check that you copied the image itself rather than a file name, link, or text selection. As a reliable alternative, save the screenshot as an image file and use Insert > Image > Upload from computer, or choose it from Drive & Photos if it is stored there.
Resize, move, and arrange the screenshot
After inserting the screenshot, select it to see the image layout options. Google Docs provides In line, Wrap text, Break text, Behind text, and In front of text. These settings determine how text flows around or alongside the image.
- In line places the image within the text flow, like a large character in the paragraph.
- Wrap text lets text flow beside the image.
- Break text separates the image from text beside it.
- Behind text places the image behind document text.
- In front of text places the image over the text layer.
Choose the layout based on the page you are making: an image meant to read as part of a paragraph often suits an inline layout, while a screenshot that needs surrounding text may suit wrapping. The other modes provide different relationships between the image and text. Select the image again to change its layout if the surrounding paragraphs no longer flow as intended.
Why the image will not move freely
First check its layout setting. An inline image participates in the text flow, so it does not behave like a freely positioned object. Select the screenshot and try a different layout option if you need text to wrap beside it or want another positioning behavior.

There is an important format limitation: Google says text-wrapping and position controls are unavailable in Pageless format. If you need those controls, switch the document to Pages format. Changing layout mode alone will not make those controls available in Pageless.
Fix common screenshot insertion problems
The image is in the wrong place
Before inserting, click at the intended location in the document. If the image is already inserted, select it and change its layout; an inline image follows the text flow, while other layout modes affect how it relates to nearby text. Adjusting the document’s text or paragraph breaks may also help place an inline screenshot where you want it.
The upload option cannot find the screenshot
Check that you are browsing the folder where the screenshot was saved and that you select the image file itself. If it is not stored on the computer, use the matching route instead: Drive & Photos for an image there, Camera for a new image, By URL for an image link, or the mobile app’s image picker on a phone or tablet.
Pasting inserts text instead of an image, or nothing appears
Make sure the clipboard contains the image, not a link or text copied alongside it. Try copying the screenshot again and pasting into the document. If that fails, save the screenshot to the device and insert it as a file. This gives you a clear fallback that does not depend on the clipboard transfer.

You cannot find wrapping or position controls
Select the image and check whether the document is in Pageless format. Google states that text-wrapping and position controls are unavailable there; switch to Pages format when you need them.
The inserted picture is not a static screenshot
Google Docs’ image insertion options also cover photos and GIFs, according to Google Docs Editors Help. If you need the document to show one particular moment from moving content, use a screenshot image of that moment rather than relying on the moving source.

Which insertion method should you use?
- Screenshot saved on your computer: use Upload from computer.
- Screenshot already in Drive or Photos: select Drive & Photos.
- Screenshot copied to the clipboard: paste it into the document.
