Most full-size power wheelchairs steer by changing the relative speed and direction of their left and right drive wheels. A controller interprets the joystick—or another drive control—and sends separate commands to the two sides, allowing the chair to travel straight, curve, or pivot without a conventional steering wheel.

What makes a power wheelchair turn?

The battery supplies power, and the controller translates the user’s input into motor commands. On many power-wheelchair bases, a powered drive wheel on each side can be controlled independently. Changing how quickly each side turns changes the chair’s path, much like a tracked vehicle that turns by moving one side faster or slower than the other.

  1. The user moves a joystick or activates another drive control.
  2. The controller interprets the requested direction and speed, subject to the chair’s programming and safety limits.
  3. The controller sends motor commands to the left and right drive sides.
  4. The drive wheels rotate at different rates, causing the base to follow a curve or pivot.
  5. Swiveling casters align with and follow the path; they usually are not the wheels steering the chair.

Wheel and caster arrangements vary by base. Permobil’s glossary of wheelchair terms describes two casters on front- and rear-wheel-drive bases and four on many mid-wheel-drive bases. The differential-steering explanation applies to many full-size power wheelchairs, not every device marketed as an electric wheelchair. A mobility scooter may steer mechanically with a tiller, while a power add-on can assist a manual chair that is still steered through its handrims.

What does the joystick do?

A typical proportional joystick combines a forward/reverse request with a left/right turn request. The controller mixes those requests into motor commands; the joystick does not usually turn a front wheel mechanically or directly set each motor independently. Moving it farther from neutral generally requests a faster or stronger response, although limits and programming affect what the chair actually does. Pride describes the joystick as controlling direction and speed in its VSI controller manual; Sunrise documents proportional speed response in the QUICKIE P-222 SE owner’s manual.

Joystick input Typical response
Forward Both drive sides move forward; equal commands produce straight travel.
Backward Both drive sides move backward; equal commands produce straight reverse travel.
Left The left side slows relative to the right, producing a left curve.
Right The right side slows relative to the left, producing a right curve.
Diagonal forward-left or forward-right Forward travel and a turn are combined.
Diagonal backward-left or backward-right Reverse travel and a turn are combined.
Release to center The command returns toward neutral and the chair uses its programmed stopping and braking behavior.

The exact response may differ by chair, drive base, user profile, or attendant control. Sunrise’s P-222 manual says its joystick returns to neutral and the brakes apply when it is released; stopping distance still depends on conditions such as speed, slope, surface, load, tire condition, and programming. Do not rely on joystick release as an emergency-braking system.

How can a wheelchair turn in place?

When the two drive sides move at similar speeds, the chair travels relatively straight. A greater speed difference makes it curve more sharply. If one side stops while the other continues, the chair can pivot around the stopped side. Some bases can command one drive side forward and the other backward, producing a tight rotation.

“Turns in place” does not mean every chair rotates around its geometric center or can spin in every setting. The effective pivot and available turning space depend on drive-wheel location, the base, tire grip, caster resistance, weight distribution, suspension, and electronic limits. The footrests, seat, front casters, or rear frame may sweep beyond the drive wheels’ pivot path. Permobil notes that turning radius alone does not fully describe functional maneuverability in its power wheelchair guide.

How drive-wheel position changes the feel of a turn

Manufacturers use different base layouts, so treat these as general tendencies rather than guarantees for every model. Sunrise compares the handling implications of front-, mid-, and rear-wheel drive.

Drive layout Typical turning characteristics What to consider
Mid-wheel drive The drive wheels sit near the user’s center of mass, often allowing a tight indoor pivot. Front and rear ends can swing as the chair pivots. Attendant controls behind the chair may feel less intuitive because the control is far from the turning center.
Front-wheel drive The powered wheels are toward the front; some designs can handle obstacles and outdoor surfaces well. The rear may swing outward through a turn, and reversing in tight spaces can take practice. Sunrise notes that rear-mounted attendant control can feel like fishtailing, with programming sometimes helping.
Rear-wheel drive The powered wheels are toward the rear; steering may feel more familiar to some users. The front and footrests can swing noticeably during a turn. Sunrise identifies this layout as relatively easy to manage with a rear-mounted attendant joystick.
Four-wheel or hybrid designs Wheel placement, suspension, and powered-wheel arrangements vary by base. Check the exact model’s design rather than assuming it behaves exactly like one of the three common layouts.

Why turning radius is not the whole story

A published turning radius describes a particular maneuver under specified conditions; it does not tell you whether the complete chair can clear a doorway or turn around a counter. The practical swept path can include a front footrest, a long leg rest, the seat, and the frame at the opposite end from the drive wheels.

  • Measure the tightest doorways, hallways, bathroom turns, elevator entrances, and work areas the chair must negotiate.
  • Consider the chair’s overall width and length, caster movement, and front and rear swing—not just the drive-wheel pivot.
  • Account for carpet, thresholds, slopes, ramps, gravel, grass, wet surfaces, and other conditions that affect traction or caster movement.
  • Reassess handling when seat position or powered seating functions change the chair’s configuration or weight distribution.

Alternative ways to control steering

A conventional joystick is only one way to provide a drive command. Depending on the user and compatible chair electronics, input options may include a mini joystick, foot or chin control, head array, sip-and-puff, single or multiple switches, touchscreen-style controls, or an attendant control mounted behind the chair. These change how the user signals a desired movement; the controller can still use the same left/right motor-steering principle.

How to practise steering safely

  1. Choose an open, level area and select the lowest available speed profile.
  2. Learn forward movement, reverse, and stopping before practising tight turns.
  3. Try slow, wide curves in both directions, then practise diagonal inputs and observe how the chair responds.
  4. Learn the clearance envelope: watch how far the footrests, rear frame, and casters sweep during turns.
  5. Practise reversing slowly. Use a spotter or mirrors if available, especially when you cannot see the chair’s path.
  6. Attempt pivot turns only after you know the chair’s clearance, and keep people, walls, and furniture outside its sweep.
  7. Practise ramps, thresholds, and uneven surfaces only after basic control is reliable. Keep hands, feet, clothing, and objects clear of wheels and casters.
  8. If the chair behaves unexpectedly, release the joystick if safe, switch off the controller when safe, and contact the provider or manufacturer. Follow the owner’s manual for operation and testing.

Pride’s Jazzy Carbon HD manual instructs users to check joystick direction, wheel response, and stopping behavior before normal operation.

Common steering problems and safe next steps

Symptom Possible explanation Safe next step
Chair veers with the joystick centered Uneven tire pressure, motor mismatch, sloping surface, calibration, or programming. Avoid risky areas. Check basic conditions described in the manual and contact the provider if it persists.
Chair turns too sharply Speed profile or steering sensitivity may be too high for the user or setting. Use a lower profile if available; ask a qualified technician about programming.
Chair will not turn tightly Base design, caster drag, low traction, insufficient clearance, or a programming limit. Do not force the joystick. Check for obstructions and seek service if the problem is new or persistent.
Casters shudder during a turn Caster wear or swivel resistance, uneven ground, or excessive turning speed. Slow down and have the casters inspected if the shudder continues.
Chair continues moving after joystick release Possible fault, latched-drive mode, control issue, or unsafe configuration. Turn the controller off when safe and contact the provider immediately; do not continue using the chair until it is assessed.
Chair will not move after being pushed Freewheel levers may still be disengaged. Re-engage powered drive only as instructed in the owner’s manual. Pride describes freewheel levers as disengaging the motors from the gearbox in its Jazzy and Quantum Dynamo ATS manual.
Reverse feels unpredictable Unfamiliar pivot point, front or rear swing, or limited visibility. Practise slowly in an open area, with a spotter if available.

Casters can also drag or point awkwardly over uneven flooring or thresholds. Persistent tracking problems on level ground may involve tires, caster alignment, drive motors, weight distribution, or controller settings; they are not necessarily evidence that the user is steering incorrectly. PG Drives Technology documentation describes a “steer correct” adjustment for compensating for mismatched motors. That is a service or programming function, not a user adjustment unless the manufacturer or a qualified technician authorizes it: PG Drives VR2 manual.

What to compare when choosing a power wheelchair

A useful choice starts with the person’s environments and control needs, not with a single turning-radius number. Compare the specific base and configuration, and try the chair under professional guidance where possible.

  • Space and maneuvering: Check overall dimensions, published turning information, footrest clearance, and front and rear swing in the actual rooms and entrances the chair must navigate.
  • Drive layout and terrain: Consider indoor turns, reversing, thresholds, slopes, and the outdoor surfaces the user encounters.
  • Control access: Confirm that the user can operate the standard or alternative control reliably, and assess how programming and attendant access affect handling.
  • Seating configuration: Tilt, recline, elevation, leg rests, and other equipment can change the configuration and handling of a base.
  • Transport and service: Evaluate weight, folding and battery arrangements, vehicle loading and tie-down needs, local service, parts, and programming support.
  • Assessment and training: A seating-and-mobility professional can evaluate fit and control access; training helps the user and caregiver learn the chair’s real clearance and stopping behavior.
