A professional hearing assessment measures the quietest sounds you can hear at different pitches and interprets the results for each ear. Online checks can flag a possible problem, but they cannot diagnose or grade hearing loss.
What symptoms can—and can’t—tell you
Hearing changes may show up as muffled speech, difficulty following conversations in noisy places, trouble hearing high-pitched sounds, or often asking people to repeat themselves. Turning up the television, persistent tinnitus (ringing or other sounds in the ears), and discomfort around loud sounds can also be warning signs. These clues suggest it is worth getting assessed; they do not reveal a damage score or the type or severity of hearing loss. The CDC’s overview of hearing-loss signs and NIDCD’s information on noise-induced hearing loss describe these symptoms.
How a professional hearing test measures hearing
A hearing test measures hearing ability rather than relying on how impaired you feel. Results are typically recorded as thresholds in decibels at different frequencies, separately for each ear. A clinician interprets the pattern to determine the degree and possible type of hearing loss. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes hearing-loss grades ranging from mild to profound, but symptoms alone cannot establish a grade.
Pure-tone audiometry
You listen through headphones to tones at different pitches and volumes, indicating when you can hear each one. The test records the quietest level you hear at each frequency, producing thresholds that can be compared across pitches and ears.

Speech audiometry
This test uses spoken words rather than isolated tones to assess how well you understand speech. It can add useful information about listening in conversation alongside pure-tone results.
Tympanometry
A clinician places a small probe in the ear to check eardrum movement. This can help identify a possible blockage or middle-ear problem, which is different from assessing inner-ear hearing thresholds. The NHS explains these tests in its guide to hearing tests.

What an online hearing check can tell you
WHO’s free hearWHO app, available on major mobile platforms, is a screening option—not a formal hearing test. A screening result may indicate that a professional assessment is appropriate, but it cannot diagnose hearing loss or replace an examination and clinical interpretation. WHO states that “hearWHO is not a formal hearing test and does not replace the need to consult a health professional” in its hearWHO guidance.
Do not use a phone check, or a single symptom, to decide how damaged your ears are. Arrange a professional test if you have gradual hearing difficulty, persistent tinnitus, or a history of repeated loud-noise exposure.

When hearing loss needs urgent attention
Seek urgent medical help if hearing loss starts suddenly in one or both ears, worsens quickly over days or weeks, or occurs with earache or discharge. Do not wait for an online test or a routine hearing appointment in these situations. The NHS lists these warning signs in its hearing-test guidance.
How loud noise can damage hearing
Risk depends on how loud the sound is, how close you are to it, and how long or how often you are exposed. NIDCD guidance says prolonged or repeated exposure at or above 85 dBA can cause hearing loss; louder, closer, and longer exposure raises the risk. NIDCD has reported that a CDC study using U.S. hearing-test data from 2011–2012 found at least 10 million adults under 70 (6%) had features suggesting noise-related hearing loss, and possibly as many as 40 million (24%). Noise-related inner-ear damage can be permanent. NIDCD explains that damaged human cochlear hair-cell bundles cannot be repaired or replaced. WHO likewise warns that regular exposure to loud or prolonged noise can permanently damage sensory cells and other structures, leading to irreversible noise-induced hearing loss, tinnitus, or both. WHO’s safe-listening guidance discusses the risk.

- Lower the volume when listening through headphones or speakers.
- Move farther from loudspeakers or other loud sources; distance reduces exposure.
- Take breaks from loud environments and limit exposure time.
- Use suitable earplugs or earmuffs when loud sound cannot be avoided. Correctly inserted earplugs can reduce sound exposure considerably, according to WHO safe-listening guidance.
Hearing protection helps reduce additional exposure; it does not restore hearing that has already been lost. A professional assessment is the way to find out what your test results show and what care, if any, may help.
