Start by identifying what fails: does “Hey Google” produce no response, does Assistant wake but misunderstand you, or does it hear the request but give no useful answer? The fix differs. On an Android phone or tablet, check connectivity, the Google app, Voice Match and language settings first. On a Google Home or Nest speaker/display, check power, the physical microphone switch and Wi‑Fi.
When “Hey Google” gets no response on Android
- Check the connection. Make sure the phone has a strong internet connection. If connectivity is unreliable, restart the phone and test again.
- Update the Google app. Open the Google Play Store, search for the Google app and install any available update.
- Turn on Hey Google and Voice Match. Open Assistant settings by saying “Hey Google, open Assistant settings” on most Assistant-enabled devices, then confirm that Hey Google and Voice Match are enabled and Voice Match setup is complete. Menu names can vary by phone model, software version and account. If the Assistant app is unavailable, Google Home settings may provide the alternative entry point.
- Check the Assistant language. In Google Home settings, verify that the selected language is the one you normally speak. Voice features are not necessarily available in every language.
- Test battery restrictions. Temporarily turn off Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery, then try the wake phrase again. This is a diagnostic test, not proof that battery settings are the cause.
- Reduce noise and retrain recognition. Move to a quieter place and speak normally. If Assistant still does not recognize you, use the Voice Match option to teach it your voice again.
If a school or managed account blocks the setting
Google Workspace for Education administrators can disable controls required for Hey Google. If the switch cannot be enabled, ask the administrator whether the account is restricted.
When a Google Home or Nest device does not wake
- Verify power and the microphone switch. Check the wall connection and make sure the device is not muted. The microphone control is in a different location on Google Home, Nest Audio, Nest Mini or Home Mini, and Nest displays, so use the control for your exact model.
- Check Wi‑Fi. Confirm the speaker or display is online and using the same Wi‑Fi network as the phone running the Google Home app.
- Watch the indicators. Say “Hey Google” and look for the device’s response: many speakers show spinning or blinking LEDs, Nest displays show four colored dots, and the original Google Home uses a light ring. No indicator usually points to power, microphone mute, hotword setup or sensitivity rather than the wording of your question.
- Reconnect power. Unplug the device, wait briefly, reconnect it and test the wake phrase after it starts up.
- Adjust hotword sensitivity. If activation is missed intermittently, change the device’s hotword sensitivity in its settings and test from the usual speaking position.
When Assistant wakes but misunderstands
If the lights or display show that Assistant heard the wake phrase but the result is wrong, repeat the request clearly, speak a little more slowly and try different wording. You can also say, “Hey Google, repeat the question,” to have the device report what it heard. This separates speech-recognition problems from a microphone or power failure.
When Assistant recognizes the request but does not answer
First confirm that the device is still online and that the microphone was not muted after activation. Test a short, familiar request. If only one phone, speaker or display fails while other devices work, concentrate on that device’s own network connection, software state and microphone controls rather than changing every account setting.

Use the symptom to choose the next check

When to submit feedback
For a Google Home or Nest speaker/display that still fails after checking power, mute status, Wi‑Fi, rebooting and sensitivity, submit a feedback report through the Google Home app. Include the device model, what its indicators did and which troubleshooting steps you tried.
