To get started with Infinispan, choose whether your application should host the cache or connect to a separate server. For the quickest remote trial, run Infinispan Server in a container and connect with a Java Hot Rod client. For an embedded trial, add Infinispan’s Maven artifacts and create a cache directly in your Java application.

What Infinispan is—and what you need

Infinispan is a distributed, in-memory data store and cache platform. It can run as libraries inside an application (embedded) or as a dedicated server process that applications access remotely. The official getting-started guide lists JDK 17 as the minimum and Maven 3.9.0 or later; Gradle and Ivy are also supported.

Choose one of two starting points: embedded mode if you want to call Java APIs inside one JVM, or remote mode if you want a separately running server. Remote is a convenient first test when you want to learn the client/server workflow; embedded avoids setting up a separate service for a single-JVM application.

Choose embedded or remote

Factor Embedded Remote
Where it runs In the application JVM, using Infinispan libraries. (Infinispan Embedding Guide) In a separate Infinispan Server process. (Infinispan Server Guide)
How the application accesses data Local Java APIs. Remote clients can use Hot Rod; the server also offers REST, RESP (Redis-compatible), and Memcached endpoints. (Infinispan Server Guide)
Operations Cache lifecycle is within the application, with fewer external services to set up for a single JVM. Cache lifecycle and administration can be separated from application logic; caches can be managed through the Console, CLI, REST, or clients.
First-run work Add Maven dependencies and write Java code. Start a server, then configure a client to connect to it.

Run Infinispan Server locally with Docker

This remote quick start uses the official container image and exposes the server’s default port, 11222, on your local machine. The tutorial also permits Podman in place of Docker. The USER and PASS values below are development credentials, not production secrets.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Start the server in a terminal:

    docker run -it --rm -p 11222:11222
      -e USER=admin -e PASS=password
      quay.io/infinispan/server:latest
  2. Leave the container running while you use the client. The Java client will connect to localhost:11222. The --rm option removes the container when it stops, so this command is intended for a disposable local trial rather than persistent data or service management.

  3. Use Java 17 or later for the client and add the Hot Rod client dependency to a Maven project:

    <dependency>
      <groupId>org.infinispan</groupId>
      <artifactId>infinispan-client-hotrod</artifactId>
    </dependency>
  4. Configure the client for the local server and credentials, then try the tutorial’s basic operations: put a key/value pair, retrieve it with get, and print the returned value. Follow the current Hot Rod Java client guide for client configuration details.

Docker Hub and Quay.io are both listed as image registries in the container documentation. The command above uses Quay.io and the mutable latest tag; for repeatable deployments, select and pin an appropriate image version rather than relying on a tag that may change.

Run Infinispan embedded in a Java application

Embedded mode uses Infinispan’s core library directly. Add the Infinispan BOM in Maven dependency management to align artifact versions, then include infinispan-core as a dependency. The embedding guide shows the Maven configuration and Java APIs.

  1. Create an EmbeddedCacheManager, configuring it as needed with ConfigurationBuilder.

Infinispan recommends one heavyweight Cache Manager per JVM. For an application that needs remote clients or independently managed cache service, use the server deployment instead of embedding the cache manager in each client application.

Connect through Hot Rod or another server endpoint

Hot Rod is Infinispan’s primary binary protocol for Java applications connecting to remote caches. The official tutorial’s client example adds org.infinispan:infinispan-client-hotrod and connects to the server at localhost:11222. Server deployments also expose REST, RESP (Redis-compatible), and Memcached endpoints; the available choice depends on the client ecosystem and how the server is configured. See the Server Guide and Hot Rod Java client guide.

Use a Maven archetype or a focused tutorial

If you want a starting project rather than a blank Maven application, the getting-started guide provides archetypes for client, embedded, store, and server-task. The documented generation command supplies the archetype group, artifact, and Infinispan version; the client and embedded examples can then be run with mvn package exec:java. The guide gives example versions, including 16.2.1, but use the version appropriate to your project. Store and server-task archetypes do not include a runnable Application.java.

Development credentials are not production security

The quick-start container command uses a simple username and password to make local experimentation straightforward. Do not carry those example credentials into a real deployment. Configure suitable identities and authorization deliberately, and consult the Server Guide for server security and deployment configuration.
