FitNesse is a wiki-centered acceptance-testing framework. You write test specifications in editable wiki pages, then connect those tables to application code through fixtures. FitNesse runs the test and displays pass/fail results on the same page. This guide explains the model, the first-test workflow described in the DZone Refcard, table types, suite organization, and the setup details you must verify for the FitNesse version you actually install.

What FitNesse does

FitNesse is open-source software for automated functional and acceptance testing. Its central idea is to put executable specifications in wiki pages so customers, testers, and programmers can create and edit examples in a shared, readable format.

A FitNesse test has three parts:

  • Wiki specification: a page containing tables, explanatory text, and expected results.
  • Fixture: adapter code that reads table values, calls the system under test (SUT), and returns values for FitNesse to compare.
  • Test system: the execution protocol and configuration that start the fixture code and provide its classpath or other runtime settings.

The page is therefore more than documentation. Its tables are instructions that invoke code, and the rendered result shows whether the behavior matched the expectation.

How a FitNesse test runs

  1. A reader opens a test page and enters inputs and expected outputs in a supported table.
  2. FitNesse identifies the fixture named by the table.
  3. The fixture maps table cells to setters, actions, queries, or other methods.
  4. The fixture exercises the SUT.
  5. FitNesse compares returned values with expected cells and marks the results on the wiki page.

For example, a payment-to-credits rule can be represented as rows of payment amounts and expected credit values. The table supplies each payment to a fixture setter. An execute method can perform the calculation, while a question-mark output column calls a result method and checks the returned value against the expected cell.

Your first test: the conceptual workflow

The DZone Refcard’s tutorial uses Java and the SLIM test system. Its sequence is useful for understanding FitNesse, but its installation commands, Java requirement, download path, default port, and invocation examples are historical. The Refcard refers to Java 6 for the version available when it was written; do not treat that as a current requirement. Check the current FitNesse project instructions and the runtime compatibility of the release you choose before installing.

1. Start FitNesse and open the local wiki

Launch the FitNesse distribution according to its current documentation, then open the local front page in a browser. If the port is already in use, use the current release’s supported port-setting option rather than copying an old command unmodified.

2. Create a suite and a test page

Create a suite page for a business area, then create a child test page beneath it. The suite is an execution container; the child page holds one coherent behavior or example.

3. Choose the test system

The Refcard’s SLIM example explicitly defines the test system with:

!define TEST_SYSTEM {slim}

That directive belongs to the workflow and version shown in the Refcard. Confirm the correct syntax and supported protocols for your installed version.

4. Make fixture classes discoverable

An import table supplies package prefixes so table names can resolve to fixture classes. Configure the classpath or equivalent runtime settings so FitNesse can load those classes and any application dependencies.

5. Add the table and fixture

Write the business examples first. Then implement the fixture methods required by the table: input setters, optional action methods such as execute, and result methods for question-mark columns.

6. Run from the page

Use the page’s test action to execute the table. FitNesse colors or annotates cells according to the comparison result, allowing a domain reader to see which example failed without reading fixture internals.

Fixture design: the bridge to application code

Fixtures are deliberately thin adapters, not the business specification itself. A fixture should translate readable table vocabulary into calls on the SUT and expose stable values for comparison.

In the payment example, input columns correspond to setter methods. An action method performs the operation, and a question-mark column invokes a method that returns the calculated credits. The expected value remains in the wiki, where a business stakeholder can review it.

This separation has an important consequence: readable wiki text does not eliminate engineering work. Someone must design the fixture API, configure dependencies, handle test data, and keep the adapter aligned with the application.

Choosing a table style

Use the table shape that matches the behavior you need to explain.

Table style Best fit What it expresses
Decision table Rules with multiple input/output cases Each row supplies inputs and compares expected results.
Query table Returned records Expected rows and columns are compared with data returned by the SUT.
Subset-query table Queries where only selected returned data matters A specified subset of the result is checked.
Ordered-query table Results whose sequence is significant Returned records are compared in order.
Script table Action-oriented workflows Rows call fixture actions and assertions in sequence.
Scenario table Reusable business steps A named sequence can be parameterized and reused by other tests.

Decision tables for rules

Decision tables are usually the clearest starting point. Put one business case on each row, keep input names meaningful, and make expected outputs explicit. They work well for pricing, eligibility, limits, and other rule-heavy behavior.

Query tables for data checks

Use query variants when the behavior under test returns records rather than one calculated value. Choose a normal query when all returned fields matter, a subset query when only selected fields are relevant, and an ordered query when row order is part of the contract.

Script and scenario tables for stories

Script tables express actions and checks in a readable sequence. Scenario tables package a reusable sequence with parameters, reducing duplication across tests. Together they can resemble Given-When-Then narratives even though FitNesse does not require a special BDD-only table type.

Organizing tests into suites

Organize suites by business functionality rather than by implementation technology. A functional hierarchy lets a team run one test while developing, a focused suite during a feature change, or a broader suite for release verification.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Place related behaviors under a meaningful domain or capability page.
  • Keep each test page focused on one behavior or example set.
  • Use suite pages to define a practical execution boundary.
  • Avoid a hierarchy based only on class names or technical layers; it is harder for non-programmers to navigate and select.

This structure also makes failures easier to route: a failed checkout suite points readers toward a business capability, while the fixture remains an implementation detail.

Other useful FitNesse tables and notation

The Refcard also describes import, comment, and library tables. Import tables resolve fixture package prefixes. Comment tables document a page without executing that table. Library tables expose reusable fixture functions.

FitNesse supports symbols for carrying values between cells and page variables for sharing configuration or data across a page hierarchy. Standard wiki formatting can make explanations, assumptions, and expected outcomes easier to read. The Refcard also discusses remote debugging, including a URL option and attaching a debugger; verify the exact mechanism and defaults against the framework version and runtime you use.

What to verify before installing

  • Supported Java or other runtime version for the specific FitNesse release.
  • Current distribution and startup instructions.
  • Default and alternate port behavior.
  • Whether the release expects SLIM, FIT, or another supported test-system configuration.
  • Classpath, dependency, and fixture-language requirements for your project.

The Refcard presents FIT as the older test system and SLIM as a lighter protocol, and its tutorial selects SLIM. That comparison explains the Refcard’s examples; it is not a current statement about project maintenance or support. The available material does not establish a current release number, maintenance cadence, supported runtime, or official download location, so consult the project’s current documentation for those facts.

Erik Pragt’s DZone Refcard, Getting Started with FitNesse (Refcard #100), is described as a free PDF and provides the introductory Java/SLIM walkthrough summarized here.
