Choose the right extraction method
Start with what you have and what you need next. A converter is usually the direct route when you already have HTML source or a saved webpage and want a file. Excel’s web connector is useful when the data is on a webpage you can reach online and you want to load it into a workbook, transform it, or refresh the connection later.

Neither method guarantees that the result will match the page’s visual appearance exactly. HTML tables can contain merged cells, nested markup, hidden content, or uneven rows; some apparent tables are built from non-table elements or generated by JavaScript. The preview and a quick spreadsheet check are part of the conversion, not optional polish.
Convert pasted or saved HTML with an online tool
Use a converter that explicitly accepts HTML markup or an HTML file. For example, XLSX.com documents pasting a selected table, pasting HTML source, or uploading an .html/.htm file; it previews tables and creates an XLSX workbook. ByteTools documents accepting full-page or table markup, detecting multiple tables, and allowing a table selection and delimiter choice. These are vendor-described capabilities, so check the current tool interface and output options before starting.

- Get the HTML. If you have a saved .html or .htm file, use the file-upload route. If the source is in a page or code editor, copy the relevant table markup when possible; otherwise copy the page HTML. A converter that accepts a full page may detect several tables.
- Paste or upload it. Choose a converter that says it parses HTML tables, not merely text or CSV. If it detects multiple tables, select the one you need and confirm the preview shows the intended header and data rows.
- Choose the output. Select CSV for a flat file to use in another application. Select XLSX when you want a workbook or when the tool offers separate sheets for multiple tables. Available formats vary: some converters also document TSV, JSON, Markdown, or clipboard output.
- Export and inspect the file. Open the result in your spreadsheet application or downstream system. Compare the header, row count, first and last data rows, and a few values against the preview or source.
For a quick CSV handoff, ByteTools says it applies RFC 4180-style quoting so commas, quotes, and newlines in cell content are represented in the CSV. Comma Reports likewise documents CSV quoting for those characters. That behavior is specific to the respective tools; when another application opens the file, confirm that it has not split a quoted value into extra columns.
When HTML comes from a URL
A paste-and-upload converter may not fetch webpages. XLSX.com says its tool cannot fetch a URL, so copying a link into that kind of converter will not supply the page HTML. If you can save or copy the page source, use that input instead. If you want Excel to connect to the webpage directly, use the web connector workflow below.
Import a webpage into Excel with Power Query
Microsoft’s Excel web connector—also called Get Data From Web—uses Power Query to connect to a webpage. Its Navigator can show Suggested Tables, which are automatically detected, and Add Table Using Examples, which derives a table from sample values. You can transform the result in Power Query Editor or load it into the worksheet grid. The exact labels and availability can vary with Excel version and subscription.

- Open the web import command. In Excel, use Data > From Web (also described by Microsoft as Get Data From Web). The connector needs internet access.
- Enter the webpage URL. Use the page that contains the table, not a search-results page or a link to an unrelated download. Connect and wait for the Navigator to display available data.
- Select a detected table. Review Suggested Tables and select the one whose preview matches the page. If automatic detection does not expose the data you need, try Add Table Using Examples if it is available in your version.
- Transform before loading, if needed. Choose the option to transform the data to open Power Query Editor. Check column names and types, remove unwanted rows or columns, and make any required adjustments before loading.
- Load and verify. Load the data into Excel, then compare its shape and values with the webpage. If you need an update later, use the workbook’s refresh controls and verify that the page still exposes compatible data.
Microsoft describes the newer connector as part of an Office 365 subscription and requiring an internet connection. Subscription packaging and Excel labels can change, so confirm that your installed edition includes the connector. A connector refresh is not a promise that every site will remain importable: the page’s structure, access requirements, or rendered content can affect what Excel detects.
Fix alignment, missing data, and unwanted values
A successful download can still have the wrong shape. Inspect the exported table rather than assuming that every HTML construct maps to one spreadsheet cell in the way you expect.
Merged headers and spanning cells
HTML uses rowspan and colspan to make a cell cover multiple rows or columns. Converter behavior differs. ByteTools says it expands both rowspan and colspan; Comma Reports says it expands colspan but not rowspan. ExcelTool.io cautions that merged headers may need realignment. If a header appears offset, inspect the original markup and preview, then choose a tool whose documented handling fits that structure or correct the exported cells in Excel.

Uneven rows and duplicate column names
Rows with different numbers of cells can shift data under the wrong headings or leave blank cells. Microsoft Learn’s documentation for its Converter by Power2Apps connector describes padding rows with extra or missing cells and making duplicate column names unique, with fixes noted in the response. That is documentation for that connector, not a guarantee about all converters or Excel’s web connector. Review irregular rows after export.
Hidden text, nested markup, and page styling
Some HTML-to-spreadsheet parsers extract text without applying the page’s CSS. XLSX.com says hidden text may be read, images are omitted, and content presented only through visual styling may not be reflected as it appears onscreen. Nested elements can also contribute text that is not obvious in a compact preview. Compare suspicious cells with the page source and remove unwanted content in the converter or spreadsheet.
JavaScript-rendered grids and div-based layouts
A table visible in a browser is not necessarily an HTML <table>. XLSX.com says its tool will not identify grids built from div elements and may miss JavaScript-rendered tables that are absent from the original HTML. If the converter preview is empty or incomplete, check whether the source contains actual table markup and whether the data is present before client-side scripts run. Excel’s URL connector is a different path to try, but its detection should still be checked in Navigator; the available documentation does not establish that it can import every dynamic grid.

Numbers, dates, identifiers, and CSV separators
Spreadsheet software may interpret text as a number or date, or change identifiers with leading zeroes. ExcelTool.io cautions that text-stored numbers may need conversion before spreadsheet functions such as SUM and AVERAGE treat them numerically. Before downstream use, check identifiers such as postal codes and account codes, dates, decimal separators, and numeric columns. For CSV, also inspect cells containing commas, quotation marks, or line breaks to ensure they remain within one field.
Validate the export before using it
- Headers: Are the names complete, unique where needed, and aligned over the right columns?
- Shape: Does the row count look plausible? Check the first and last records and any rows with merged or missing cells.
- Values: Compare representative cells against the page, especially identifiers with leading zeroes, dates, and numbers stored as text.
- Special characters: Check commas, quotes, line breaks, non-Latin text, and any nested or hidden content.
- Multiple tables: Confirm that the selected table is the intended one and that other detected tables were not inadvertently combined.
- Refresh needs: If you need repeatable updates, prefer the Excel connection workflow and test a refresh in the workbook rather than assuming a one-time converter export will update itself.
These checks are practical safeguards based on the documented output formats and parsing differences; they are not claims that a particular converter has passed an independent test.

Some converter vendors say parsing happens in the browser and HTML is not uploaded. ByteTools and Comma Reports make such claims; XLSX.com also says its parser is inert, does not execute page scripts, and does not load referenced assets. Treat these as the vendors’ statements, not independent security audits. For confidential source, review the tool’s current privacy terms and avoid submitting material you are not permitted to share.

Excel’s web connector accesses the page over the internet, and the page may require access or expose a structure that changes over time. A converter that only parses pasted or uploaded HTML is not equivalent to a URL-fetching service. Do not assume that one method’s privacy or access behavior applies to the other.

Common problems and fixes
- The converter shows no table: Confirm that you pasted valid HTML rather than the rendered page’s plain text. Check for actual
<table>markup; a div-based grid or a table generated only by JavaScript may not appear in the supplied source. - The webpage URL is rejected by a paste tool: Use a URL-based workflow such as Excel’s web connector, or provide the converter with supported HTML source or a saved HTML file.
- Columns are shifted: Inspect rowspan and colspan cells and inconsistent row widths. Try a converter that documents support for the relevant span behavior, then realign any remaining merged headers.
- Text appears that was hidden on the page: The parser may read the HTML without applying CSS. Remove those cells or rows from the exported data, and do not treat the visual appearance of the page as proof that the source lacks hidden text.
- Excel changes an identifier or date: Set the relevant column to text or the intended data type during Power Query transformation or after import, then compare the value with the source.
- CSV content spills into extra columns: Check whether fields containing commas, quotes, or line breaks were quoted correctly. Re-export with a tool that documents CSV quoting, or import the file through Excel’s text/CSV controls and review delimiter and quoting behavior.
- Excel does not show the expected connector or tables: Verify the Excel edition and subscription, internet access, the entered URL, and the Navigator preview. Connector availability and labels may differ by installed version.
- A later refresh changes or fails: Reopen the query in Power Query, inspect the source and detected table, and update the transformation steps if the webpage structure has changed.
Which method should you use?
For HTML already in hand, use a paste/upload converter and select CSV for a flat interchange file or XLSX for a workbook. For a webpage URL and a need to work inside Excel or refresh imported data, start with the web connector. In either case, choose based on the actual table structure, inspect how merged cells and multiple tables are handled, and validate the file before using it as a source of record. The inspected product documentation establishes different capabilities and limitations, but no independent performance test establishes a universally best converter.

Can I extract a table from a webpage without copying its HTML?
Yes, if the page is accessible to Excel’s web connector: connect with Data > From Web and choose a detected table in Navigator. A converter that only accepts pasted or uploaded HTML cannot fetch the URL itself.
Will an HTML-to-CSV converter capture a table that appears after the page loads?
Not necessarily. If scripts create the grid after the original HTML is delivered, a parser working on that source may not see it. Check the supplied HTML for the data and confirm what the converter preview detects.
Should I choose CSV or XLSX?
Choose CSV when the next system needs a flat delimited file. Choose XLSX when you want a workbook, or when a converter places multiple tables on separate sheets. Check how your receiving application interprets types and quoted fields.
