Contextual computing helps enterprise AI and decision systems act on data with its business meaning intact: who or what it concerns, how it relates to other information, when it applies, where it came from, and which rules govern its use. An enterprise information fabric enables this by connecting authoritative systems through shared semantics, entity relationships, retrieval services, and governance—not simply by collecting data in one lake or vector index.

What contextual computing means in an enterprise

Enterprise data is useful only when a system can interpret it in the situation where it is used. A customer name may refer to several people or companies; an asset reading may matter only during a particular maintenance phase; a policy may permit one user to see a field while restricting it for another. Contextual computing brings these signals together so a decision platform can interpret information in relation to the user, process, time, and business constraints.

Thanigaivel Rangasamy’s 2026 account describes a shift from rigid enterprise systems toward dynamic, context-driven decision platforms. Relevant context can include user roles, process timestamps, operational phases, system telemetry, and business constraints. In practice, it may also include relationships among customers, products, assets, events, cases, and documents; the provenance and freshness of each fact; and the permissions attached to it.

IBM’s Redpaper calls semantic technology “a key enabler to ‘contextual computing’ and the contextual enterprise.” The important distinction is that context is not just additional text placed beside a record. It is structured meaning and rules that systems can interpret and apply.

How an information fabric carries context

A fabric connects information where it lives and makes it usable across analytics, applications, and AI. Its value depends on retaining meaning and control as data crosses system boundaries. Microsoft explains that extracted data can lose the business meaning, relationships, and operational rules present in its originating applications. A fabric addresses that loss by making those elements explicit and reusable.

Authoritative systems and sources

ERP, CRM, IT service management, operational telemetry, documents, and external reference data remain the sources of record for their respective facts. Identify which system owns each important concept or attribute; otherwise, conflicting values can silently become competing truths.

Shared semantics and ontology

A semantic layer or ontology defines the business vocabulary: concepts, definitions, identifiers, permitted relationships, and policy meaning. It maps that vocabulary to source data so that “customer,” “account,” or “asset” can be interpreted consistently across systems. IBM describes RDF as a graph model that can accept new concepts and relationships without changing the schema, an approach that can support integration as domains evolve.

Knowledge graph and entity resolution

A knowledge graph represents connections among entities and events in a form that can be queried. Entity resolution determines when differently named or formatted records refer to the same real-world entity—and when similar names refer to different ones. This matters for questions such as whether a risk event belongs to a particular customer, or which service cases concern the same asset.

Context and retrieval services

Services can combine semantic search, graph retrieval, vector retrieval, temporal filters, lineage, and permission checks. Each answers a different need: semantic and vector retrieval find relevant content; graph retrieval follows explicit relationships; temporal filtering selects information valid for a given period; lineage shows where it came from; and access checks determine whether it may be used for a particular request.

Decision, agent, and governance layers

RAG applications, copilots, workflow agents, recommendations, and alerts consume the resulting context. Governance spans the full path: data-quality rules, approval workflows, audit trails, privacy controls, human review, monitoring, and controlled changes to models or ontologies. Without those controls, an agent can retrieve a plausible answer that uses stale, misidentified, or unauthorized information.

Why context changes retrieval quality

Retrieval quality is not determined by embeddings or model size alone. A system can retrieve text that looks relevant yet still answer incorrectly if it resolves the wrong entity, uses information that has expired, misses a relationship, or ignores a permission. Context-aware retrieval therefore needs a way to establish identity, time validity, source lineage, and allowed use alongside relevance.

Quantexa distinguishes ordinary RAG from contextual RAG and describes GraphRAG as knowledge-graph retrieval governed by an ontology. Its Contextual Fabric is described as combining unified internal and external data, entity resolution, graphs, and scores. The stated application includes decision intelligence such as perpetual KYC and customer-risk investigation, where confusing similarly named entities can distort the decision. These are vendor descriptions of capabilities and use cases, not independent comparative performance results.

Use retrieval methods according to the question. Vector retrieval can help find semantically similar passages; graph retrieval is suited to traversing known relationships; semantic search applies business vocabulary; and temporal filters narrow results to the relevant period. Combining methods is useful when a task requires both relevant evidence and a trustworthy relationship between the evidence and the entity under review.

What current platform examples document

Platform descriptions illustrate different ways vendors frame context capabilities. The table reports only what each named source documents; it does not establish equal feature scope, availability, performance, or interoperability across products.

Example Documented approach Reader-relevant implication
Google Cloud Knowledge Catalog Google describes it as a “universal context engine” that maps and infers business meaning across a data estate using aggregation, enrichment, and search. The announcement also lists zero-copy federation across enterprise applications, data products with intent, SLAs and governance constraints, reusable data-quality rules, structured approval workflows, and column-level lineage. Assess how the catalog represents business meaning and constraints, and how its federation and lineage capabilities fit the systems and governance needs in scope.
Microsoft Fabric IQ ontology Microsoft describes an ontology that binds business vocabulary to data sources, represents relationships as a graph, and supports data agents and semantic search. It also describes data-usage constraints, personal-data handling rules, compliance requirements, quality judgments, and approved exceptions. Evaluate whether the ontology can express the concepts, relationships, and usage rules your agents need, and how those definitions map to authoritative data.
Quantexa Contextual Fabric Quantexa describes a layer combining unified internal and external data, entity resolution, graphs, and scores; it distinguishes this from ordinary RAG and describes GraphRAG as knowledge-graph retrieval governed by an ontology. For entity-centric decisions, examine how the system resolves ambiguous identities and how its graph and ontology support the decision workflow.

These descriptions should be treated as documented capabilities, not proof that a product will deliver a particular retrieval gain, latency, or return on investment in a specific environment. How to introduce contextual computing safely

  1. Choose a bounded, high-value domain. Start with a use case such as customer risk, field service, network operations, or environmental monitoring. A well-scoped problem makes it possible to establish the relevant entities, decisions, and success measures before expanding the fabric.
  2. Name authoritative sources and domain owners. Identify the systems that own key facts, then work with domain owners to define the business vocabulary and resolve conflicting definitions.
  3. Map the vocabulary to data and rules. Connect concepts and identifiers to source fields. Add relationships, timestamps, provenance, and access rules so the resulting context states not just what a fact is, but where it came from, when it applies, and who may use it.
  4. Match retrieval to the task. Add entity resolution, semantic search, graph retrieval, and vector retrieval where each is appropriate. Test identity matching and time validity as well as whether a retrieved passage appears relevant.
  5. Put controls before actions. Attach quality checks, lineage, policy constraints, approval gates, and human review before an agent can trigger consequential actions. Record what information informed a recommendation or decision.
  6. Pilot recommendations before automating. Measure retrieval and decision quality in a recommendation-first workflow. Expand the ontology and permit more automation only as controls and outcomes are demonstrated.

IBM’s environmental-analytics example illustrates the pattern: an integrated system performs real-time measurement and analysis of physical, biological, and chemical data during operations to support earlier detection and response. The paper says the semantic framework supplies observation and measurement context needed for integration, analytics, and optimization. The broader lesson is to model the operational meaning of a measurement, not treat its value as self-explanatory.

How to compare architectures and platforms

Compare candidates against the work your domain must perform, not a single “AI readiness” claim. Ask for demonstrations using representative entities, data, policies, and time-sensitive cases from the intended workflow.

  • Semantic coverage: Can the ontology express the domain vocabulary, identifiers, relationships, and policy concepts that matter?
  • Graph and entity resolution: Can it connect relevant entities and distinguish duplicate records from genuinely similar names?
  • Freshness, time, and lineage: Can users determine when information was valid, how current it is, and which source produced it?
  • Retrieval choices: Are semantic, vector, and graph retrieval available where needed, and can they be combined with temporal filters?
  • Policy and privacy enforcement: Can access, personal-data handling, compliance requirements, and exceptions be enforced for the actual users and agents?
  • Integration and portability: How does the architecture connect to authoritative applications, and what dependencies or vendor lock-in would result?
  • Oversight and explanation: Can reviewers inspect sources, lineage, approvals, and the reasoning inputs behind a recommendation or action?
  • Operational fit: Measure latency, scalability, and operating cost in the intended deployment; the cited platform descriptions do not establish comparable values for these dimensions.

A strong choice is the one that preserves the meaning, identity, time context, provenance, and permissions required for the target decision—and makes them inspectable by the people accountable for it. If an architecture cannot demonstrate those properties on a bounded workflow, adding more content to a vector index is unlikely to solve the underlying context problem.
