Recommended Free Tools
duf is a command-line utility for viewing filesystem capacity and free space in a more readable, configurable format than the traditional df listing. Run duf to see mounted filesystems, or tailor the results with paths, filters, sorting, inode data, and JSON output. It reports filesystem-level usage; it is not a tool for identifying which individual folders or files occupy the most space.
What duf shows—and what it does not
The project describes duf as “Disk Usage/Free Utility (Linux, BSD, macOS & Windows)” and presents it as a more user-friendly alternative to df. Its output organizes filesystem usage and available space in a terminal-adaptive table. You can group devices, sort and filter the listing, choose columns, set color thresholds or themes, and request JSON. See the duf project README for the command reference and platform guidance.
The distinction matters when troubleshooting a full drive: duf helps show which filesystems or mount points are low on space, but the documented purpose is not to find the largest directories or files. Use a directory-size analyzer when you need that level of detail.
Install duf on your operating system
The project documents package-manager installation, downloadable binaries, and building from source. Which route is available depends on your operating system and distributor; check the upstream README for current commands and packages.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Ubuntu and Debian: The README lists package routes for Ubuntu 22.04 and later and Debian 12 and later. These documented baselines are not a guarantee that every derivative distribution provides the package.
- Fedora-family systems: The project lists
dnfas a package-manager route. - macOS: Homebrew and MacPorts are listed. Homebrew Formulae currently lists duf version 0.9.1 under the MIT license and states binary package support for Apple Silicon and Intel macOS, as well as Linux ARM64 and x86_64. That is Homebrew’s listing, not a claim that every package source has the same version. Check Homebrew Formulae for its current package details.
- Windows: The README lists Chocolatey, Scoop, and downloadable binaries.
- BSD and Android: The README lists FreeBSD
pkg, OpenBSDpkg_add, and Termuxpkgfor Android. - Build from source: The README states that source builds require Go 1.23 or higher. Follow its current build instructions because requirements can change.
Check filesystem space with duf
View the default listing
After installing duf, run:
duf
The command displays filesystem capacity and free-space information for the filesystems it normally includes. To limit the display to devices or mount points associated with particular paths, pass those paths:
duf / /home
Replace the example paths with ones relevant to your system. The command reports the filesystems associated with those paths rather than scanning their directory contents to calculate folder sizes.

Include filesystems normally left out
Use --all to include pseudo, duplicate, and inaccessible filesystems:
duf --all
This is useful when an expected filesystem is missing from the ordinary view. Including these entries can also make the listing busier, so use the option when you need the broader view.

Filter, sort, and customize the output
Show or hide selected entries
The documented filter pairs let you include or exclude filesystems and mount points. The project also documents mount-point wildcard patterns, which should be quoted so the shell passes the pattern to duf:
duf --only local --hide network
duf --only-fs ext4 --hide-fs tmpfs
duf --only-mp '/mnt/*'
These examples illustrate the --only/--hide, --only-fs/--hide-fs, and --only-mp/--hide-mp filter families. Use the values and pattern forms documented by the README for your system; filesystem names and mount points vary.

Sort by the field you need
Sorting options accept documented keys for fields such as size, usage, and inode measures. Consult the README’s supported keys and pass the one that fits the comparison—for example, sorting by usage when you want to bring heavily used filesystems together. The available key names are part of the command’s documented interface and should not be guessed.
Choose columns or inspect inode use
Output-column options let you select which fields appear in the table; use the README’s documented column names. To switch the display to inode information, run:

duf --inodes
Inode capacity is a separate resource from byte capacity. A filesystem can run out of inodes even when it still has free space measured in bytes, so this view can help investigate that particular failure mode.
Use JSON for scripts
For machine-readable output, run:
duf --json
JSON is more suitable than parsing the human-oriented table in a script. Check the project documentation when building automation that depends on particular fields or output details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.duf compared with df
Both tools address filesystem-capacity reporting. duf’s documented difference is primarily its presentation and workflow options, rather than a different kind of disk scan.
| Need | duf | df |
|---|---|---|
| Check filesystem usage and free space | Displays filesystem information in a formatted terminal table. | Provides the familiar filesystem-capacity listing. |
| Sort and filter the listing | Documents sorting, device grouping, and filters for filesystems and mount points. | The cited duf README does not establish equivalent presentation options for df. |
| Customize visible fields | Documents selectable output columns and an inode view. | The cited duf README does not establish equivalent presentation options for df. |
| Machine-readable output | Provides a documented JSON option. | The cited duf README does not establish an equivalent JSON option for df. |
| Find the largest folders or files | Not its documented purpose; it reports filesystems and mount points. | Not established by the cited duf README as a directory-size function. |
Use whichever capacity listing fits your workflow; duf is particularly useful when sorting, filtering, or a more configurable terminal view helps. Neither should be mistaken for a directory-by-directory space analyzer.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot a missing command or filesystem
- The shell cannot find
duf: Confirm that installation completed and that the executable is available on your shell’s command path. If you built from source, follow the README’s current build and installation directions. - Running
dufinvokes an alias instead: The project notes thatoh-my-zshdefines an alias namedduf. In that shell, remove the alias withunalias duf, then try the command again. - A filesystem is absent from the listing: Try
duf --allto include pseudo, duplicate, and inaccessible filesystems, or pass a relevant path to limit the listing to associated mounts.
