The six standalone programs below progress from a simple outline to filled, colored petals and a flower with a stem and leaves. Run each program separately, then change its radius, turn angle, or colors to see how the drawing changes.
Before you run the programs
Python Turtle turns drawing commands into visible output, making it a useful way to explore programming concepts. The examples use a named turtle.Turtle() instance so the drawing commands and pen state are explicit. Each program calls turtle.done() to keep the window available after drawing. See the Python 3.14.8 turtle documentation for the module’s reference.
- Save one example in a file such as
flower.py. - Run it with Python. A Turtle graphics window should open and display the drawing.
- Change a value such as the radius or color, then run it again to compare the result.
These are six ways to build a flower, not a canonical set of Turtle programs. The first pattern is also shown in Al Sweigart’s Simple Turtle Tutorial for Python; the other variations combine documented Turtle drawing, fill, color, and pen controls.
1. Draw a six-circle flower
This is the simplest radial pattern: draw a full circle, turn 60 degrees, and repeat six times. The repeated circles overlap to make a flower-like outline. Since 360 degrees make a full turn, six evenly spaced elements use a 360 ÷ 6 = 60-degree increment.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
import turtle
pen = turtle.Turtle()
pen.color("royalblue")
pen.pensize(2)
for _ in range(6):
pen.circle(60)
pen.left(60)
turtle.done()
Change 60 in circle(60) to make the circles larger or smaller. The loop repeats the same two actions; its final turn returns the heading to its starting direction.
2. Make a rosette with a petal function
A function lets you define one petal once and reuse it. Here each petal is made from two arcs, each with a radius of 50 and an extent of 60 degrees. The turtle turns 120 degrees between petals; six repetitions distribute them around the center.

import turtle
pen = turtle.Turtle()
pen.color("darkorchid")
pen.pensize(2)
def petal():
for _ in range(2):
pen.circle(50, 60)
pen.left(120)
for _ in range(6):
petal()
pen.left(60)
turtle.done()
circle(radius, extent) draws an arc rather than a full circle when extent is less than 360 degrees. The turn inside petal() connects the two arcs into a pointed loop. The additional 60-degree turn positions the next petal. This is one useful petal construction, not the only possible geometry.
3. Build petals directly from arcs
This variation places a pair of broader arcs in each petal. Each arc has a radius of 70 and an extent of 45 degrees; the turtle turns 135 degrees between arcs, then 45 degrees before starting the next petal. The six petals are therefore spaced by one sixth of a full turn.

import turtle
pen = turtle.Turtle()
pen.color("seagreen")
pen.pensize(2)
for _ in range(6):
pen.circle(70, 45)
pen.left(135)
pen.circle(70, 45)
pen.left(45)
turtle.done()
The extent argument sets the arc angle, and Turtle changes the turtle’s heading by that extent as it draws the arc. Adjusting the arc extent and the turns changes the petal’s shape and how the petals meet.
4. Change color for each petal
The loop can also change the pen color on every pass. This program draws six two-arc petals and selects a new color before drawing each one; its petal geometry stays the same throughout.

import turtle
pen = turtle.Turtle()
pen.pensize(3)
colors = ["crimson", "darkorange", "goldenrod", "mediumseagreen", "royalblue", "mediumorchid"]
for color in colors:
pen.pencolor(color)
pen.circle(55, 60)
pen.left(120)
pen.circle(55, 60)
pen.left(120)
turtle.done()
pencolor() changes the outline color, not the interior fill. There are six colors and six loop passes, so each petal receives one color. The final 120-degree turn inside the loop leaves the turtle ready for the next petal.
5. Fill the petals
To color a petal’s interior, set a fill color and place begin_fill() before tracing its closed outline and end_fill() after it. This program uses the two-arc petal from the rosette example; the second arc and turn close the petal path.

import turtle
pen = turtle.Turtle()
pen.pensize(2)
pen.color("darkslateblue", "plum")
for _ in range(6):

pen.left(120)
pen.circle(50, 60)
pen.left(120)
pen.end_fill()
pen.left(60)
turtle.done()
For a Turtle instance, color(outline, fill) sets both colors; begin_fill() and end_fill() mark the boundary that Turtle fills. Keep the fill calls around the complete petal path so each interior is filled as intended.
6. Draw a flower with a stem and leaves
This final program combines a filled rosette with a separately drawn stem and two leaves. It lifts the pen while moving between parts, preventing unwanted lines that would otherwise connect the flower head, stem, and leaves.
import turtle
pen = turtle.Turtle()
pen.pensize(3)
# Flower head
pen.color("darkgreen", "lightpink")
for _ in range(6):
pen.begin_fill()

pen.begin_fill()
pen.circle(35, 60)
pen.left(120)
pen.circle(35, 60)
pen.left(120)
pen.end_fill()
# Right leaf
pen.penup()
pen.setheading(20)
pen.forward(22)
pen.pendown()
pen.setheading(20)
pen.begin_fill()
pen.circle(35, 60)
pen.left(120)
pen.circle(35, 60)
pen.left(120)
pen.end_fill()
turtle.done()
In standard Turtle mode, the initial heading points east, and setheading(90) points north. This program sets explicit headings before drawing the stem and leaves, so their direction does not depend on the heading left by the rosette. penup() and pendown() temporarily stop and resume drawing while the turtle moves.
How to adjust the flower geometry
For n equally spaced elements, use a turn increment of 360 / n degrees. For example, eight petals are spaced 45 degrees apart. That rule positions repeated elements evenly, but a petal’s shape still depends on the radii, arc extents, and turns used to construct it.

Its optional steps argument controls the number of segments; when omitted, Turtle chooses automatically. If the curve looks angular, try specifying a higher number of steps, such as pen.circle(60, steps=60). The steps setting approximates a full circle, so use it when drawing full circles; for partial arcs, adjust the radius and extent instead.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common problems
- The drawing is partly off-screen: Reduce the circle radii or move the starting position before drawing.
- Lines connect separate parts: Call
pen.penup()before repositioning andpen.pendown()when ready to draw again. - The window closes immediately: Run the script in a way that leaves Turtle’s window open and ensure
turtle.done()is present at the end. import turtlereports an_tkintererror: Turtle depends on tkinter. Python’s Windows and macOS installers include it, but Linux and other platform packages can vary; install or enable the Tk interface package provided for your Python distribution. See the Python turtle documentation.
