A credential audit record can contain a real key identifier and still name the wrong key. During rotation, a long-running session may continue using an earlier token even after configuration points to a replacement. If the system looks up credential metadata only when it writes the record, it can attribute that earlier call to the new credential instead.
How a rotation can make an accurate-looking record wrong
Credential rotation can leave a period in which two versions coexist: configuration has moved to a new key, while an established session still holds and uses the earlier token. The call and the audit write then observe different states. If the audit path reads the current configuration rather than preserving what the call used, the record can identify a credential that did not make that call.
This is the failure mechanism described by weiche chiu in a DEV Community essay. It is an author-reported example, not an independently reproduced finding or a quantified claim about how often this happens. The practical question for an audit trail is not merely whether it contains a valid credential identifier; it is whether that identifier was bound to the actual call.
Capture evidence at the call site
The essay’s central design recommendation is to capture identity and the credential values available at the point of use, then carry those values into the resulting record. Do not reconstruct the call’s credential later by consulting configuration that may have changed.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Review each field’s provenance and timing. Identity may originate in authenticated context, the call transport, a request body, or configuration; these sources are not interchangeable. Likewise, credential fields should represent the state at call time, not the state at record-write or record-read time. A useful review asks:
- Which trusted source identifies the authenticated actor and credential for this call?
- At what point are credential fields captured, and can rotation occur before the record is written?
- Which values are available for this credential type?
- Does a missing value mean unknown, unavailable, or genuinely absent?
As Chiu puts it, “The record has to hold what the system actually did rather than what it was asked to do.”

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Choose fields that match the credential type
JWT-based credentials
For a JWT, the essay discusses recording claims or identifiers such as kid, jti, and exp when they are available. Their meanings are distinct: RFC 7515 describes kid as a hint about which key secured a JWS, while RFC 7519 defines jti as a JWT identifier and exp as an expiration-time claim. These claims are optional; the standards define them but do not require an application to put them in an audit record. See the RFC 7515 and RFC 7519 references.

Do not apply JWT assumptions automatically to static keys. A provider key may expose no expiry value. In that case, a blank expiry does not establish that the old key can no longer be used. Chiu recommends tracking revocation confirmation separately rather than treating missing expiry as proof of revocation.

Make identity precedence explicit
A record can also misattribute a call when several inputs offer different actor identities. In the essay’s approval-record example, the request identity takes precedence over the actor supplied in adapter context. Chiu argues that the authenticated context is the evidence-bearing value. Engineering teams should document which trusted identity source wins and ensure a less authoritative input cannot silently overwrite it.
A request ID is useful for correlating events, but it is not necessarily a credential handle. The essay notes that its policy decision record includes a request ID without identifying the credential. Keep those concepts separate: a request identifier can point to the transaction while a credential identifier attributes the authentication used.

Review the rotation path without mistaking checks for proof
Chiu suggests examining calls from the most recent rotation and tracing where the identity fields in their records came from. Treat this as a review method, not as a reported test result: the essay does not establish that its recommendations were implemented or independently tested.
Recommended Free Tools
- Identify calls made during the last rotation, including calls from sessions that began before configuration changed.
- For each call, trace the credential identity from the authenticated context or call transport through to the stored record.
- Check whether the record captured credential fields at call time or looked them up later.
- For each unavailable field, determine whether the record represents it as unknown, not applicable, or absent; do not let an empty value imply a conclusion it cannot support.
- Compare the record’s attribution with the credential that the call path actually supplied, and correct the capture flow if they can diverge.
The available account provides no frequency estimate, incident count, or measured reduction in risk. The useful outcome of this review is a demonstrable data path from the credential used for a call to the identity stored for that call.
