The right Linux screenshot command depends first on whether your desktop session is X11 or Wayland, then on whether you need a still image, an interactive selection, or video. This guide compares eight free and open-source options without treating them as a universal ranking: several are X11-only, while the Wayland option has a compositor requirement. The list includes both still-image tools and a screencast recorder because “screen capture” can mean either.
Choose a tool for your session and capture task
Check the session type before choosing a command. X server tools such as ImageMagick import, scrot, and xwd are not native Wayland solutions. For Wayland, grim is a command-line screenshot option, but it works only when the compositor supports the required screencopy protocol. A package being present in a distribution repository does not establish that it will work with every desktop or compositor.
| Tool | Session and purpose | Capture and workflow |
|---|---|---|
ImageMagick import |
X server still screenshots | Whole screen or selected window; saves an image file |
scrot |
X11 still screenshots | Scriptable; supports window and rectangular-region capture |
grim |
Wayland still screenshots | Whole output or region; can write to standard output |
xwd |
X11 still screenshots | Lower-level capture; commonly piped to a converter |
gnome-screenshot |
GNOME still-image CLI; GNOME also has a graphical capture interface | CLI supports active window, selected area, and clipboard output |
xfce4-screenshooter |
XFCE desktop screenshot utility | Full screen, active window, or selected region; includes command-line use |
| Flameshot CLI | Screenshot commands and interactive annotation | Can be scripted or bound to keyboard shortcuts |
screencast |
X11 video recording | Third-party FFmpeg wrapper; supports offline recording and live streaming |
Choose a command-line primitive for scripts and repeatable capture; a desktop-integrated utility when you want selection or annotation; and a recorder when the result must be video rather than a still. The exact selection mechanism differs: a tool may prompt interactively, accept a target or region, rely on a separate selector, or require a conversion step.
Eight free and open-source options
1. ImageMagick import: capture from an X server
ImageMagick documents import as a way to “capture some or all of an X server screen and save the image to a file.” It can capture the root screen or a selected window. This is a practical choice when ImageMagick is already part of a command-line image workflow, but its documented target is an X server screen; do not assume it is a Wayland-native capture command. See the ImageMagick Import command-line documentation.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. scrot: scriptable X11 screenshots
Debian’s testing manual describes scrot as a simple command-line screenshot utility based on imlib2. It offers image-format and quality options and can capture a window or rectangular region, making it useful for scripted capture on X11. Confirm that the current session is X11 rather than treating it as a general Wayland choice. Consult the Debian testing scrot manual for the documented options.
3. grim: a Wayland screenshot command
Debian’s trixie man page documents grim as a Wayland screenshot utility. It can capture a specified region and write image data to standard output, which is useful in pipelines. It requires the compositor to support the screencopy protocol, so success on one Wayland desktop does not guarantee success on another. For interactive region selection, slurp is often paired with grim; that helper is separate from the eight tools listed here. See the Debian trixie grim manual and Debian’s screenshot wiki.

4. xwd: a lower-level X11 capture tool
xwd is a standard X.Org utility for capturing an X11 window or display. Its output may need a separate conversion step to become a common image format; Debian’s screenshot guidance shows piping it through ImageMagick or Netpbm. That makes it a reasonable fit for users comfortable composing Unix pipelines, rather than those seeking a polished interactive workflow. See Debian’s screenshot wiki.
5. gnome-screenshot: GNOME still-image capture
Debian’s trixie man page documents command-line capture of the active window, a user-selected area, and output to the clipboard. GNOME’s help separately describes a graphical capture interface with both still-image and screencast modes. Do not assume CLI flags and behavior are identical across GNOME releases; use the manual for the installed package and the desktop help for the graphical workflow. 6. xfce4-screenshooter: XFCE’s desktop utility
xfce4-screenshooter is a desktop utility rather than a minimal capture primitive. Debian’s documentation covers full-screen, active-window, and selected-region capture, as well as command-line usage. It is a natural option for an XFCE workflow when you want a desktop-oriented capture utility; check the installed manual for the exact command syntax. See the Debian source manual and Debian’s screenshot wiki.
7. Flameshot CLI: commands plus annotation
Flameshot is free and open source, with a command-line interface that can be scripted or bound to keyboard shortcuts. Its interactive annotation workflow distinguishes it from bare screenshot commands when you need to mark up an image as part of capture. Check the project’s current installation guidance and the requirements of your session’s capture backend before relying on it. See the Flameshot documentation.

8. screencast: an X11 video-recording wrapper
The third-party screencast project provides a command-line interface for recording an X11 desktop using FFmpeg, including offline recording and live streaming. It is a video tool, not another still-image screenshot command. Because current maintenance and distribution availability are not established here, verify both before choosing it for a new setup. See the project’s screencast repository.

Check compatibility before building a workflow
- Identify the session: verify whether you are running X11 or Wayland; the X server tools listed above should not be expected to work as native Wayland capture commands.
- Check compositor support: for
grim, confirm support for the screencopy protocol. For other Wayland-oriented desktop workflows, use the documentation for the installed desktop and tool. - Match the target: determine whether you need the full display, a window, or a region, and whether selection should be interactive or automated.
- Match the output: check whether the command writes an image file, standard output, or clipboard content, and whether conversion or a helper selector is part of the workflow.
- Choose still or video: screenshot utilities produce stills; GNOME’s graphical capture interface also offers screencast mode, while the
screencastproject is specifically an X11 video recorder. - Verify the installed version: Debian testing, trixie, and source manuals describe their documented package versions, not every Linux distribution’s current package. Confirm present package availability and options locally.
