Which Cat5 cable should you use?
For a typical replacement or short Ethernet connection, choose a Cat5e RJ45 patch cable in the length you need. Cat5e is 100-MHz twisted-pair cabling used for Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet; Intel specifies Category 5 or Category 6 cable for those Ethernet adapter classes (Intel Ethernet cable guidance; U.S. cabling standards summary).
RJ45 is the familiar name for the modular Ethernet plug; the connector is also described as 8P8C. For a ready-made patch cable, the main practical choice is the right length and an intact connector. If you are fitting a plug to bulk cable, match the conductor arrangement at both ends rather than mixing pinout schemes.
How should an Ethernet cable be wired?
T568A and T568B are the two recognized termination schemes. A normal straight-through Ethernet cable uses the same scheme at both ends. The schemes differ in the positions of the orange and green pairs, so an A termination at one end and B at the other changes the wiring and can cause a crossed-pair problem (cabling standards summary; Intel Ethernet cable guidance).

If you are repairing an existing cable run, copy the scheme already used at the far end. Keep each twisted pair together: Ethernet pin functions require pins 1 and 2 to form one pair and pins 3 and 6 another (Intel Ethernet cable guidance; Fluke Networks on split pairs).
- Choose T568A or T568B and use it consistently at both ends.
- Keep the pair twists as close to the connector as possible; do not untwist more than about 1/2 inch at a termination (Intel Ethernet cable guidance).
- Do not rearrange individual conductors simply to make their colors appear in a preferred order; preserve the intended pairs.
How long can a Cat5e Ethernet run be?
The maximum Ethernet channel length is 100 m (328 ft). A common installation breakdown is up to 90 m for the permanent link, plus patch cables of up to 5 m at each end. The 90 m permanent-link and 100 m channel figures are described by the Fiber Optic Association; Eaton describes up to 5 m of patch cable at each end (FOA 1000BASE-T reference; Eaton copper connectivity FAQ).

Count the entire path, including patch leads and the in-wall cable, rather than considering only the visible cable between two devices. Also check intermediate wall plates, jacks, or punch-down blocks; intervening hardware must match or exceed the cable category (Intel Ethernet cable guidance).

Work from the simplest checks toward cable testing. A crossed wire can prevent a switch from detecting a workstation, and visible link/activity lights can help establish whether the devices detect a physical connection (Intel Ethernet cable guidance).

- Check both devices. Look for link or activity lights at the computer and switch/router. Replace the suspected patch lead with a known-good cable.
- Inspect the terminations. Check that both ends use the same T568A or T568B arrangement, the conductors are in the intended pairs, contacts are secure, and the pairs have not been untwisted excessively.
- Run a wiremap test. A cable tester can identify opens, shorts, reversed conductors, crossed pairs, and pair-order faults (FOA cable testing reference).
- Investigate a passing continuity test if faults remain. A split pair can preserve simple end-to-end continuity while causing crosstalk problems. Some basic wiremappers do not detect split pairs, so use a tester capable of evaluating pair integrity or crosstalk when performance remains poor (FOA cable testing reference).
- Check the full run. Verify the channel length and examine wall plates, punch-down blocks, and jacks along the route. Ensure each intervening component matches or exceeds the cable category.
A tester is most useful when you terminate or repair cables regularly. For one-off troubleshooting, a known-good patch cable and a basic wiremap tester can help distinguish a bad lead or termination from a problem elsewhere in the connection.
