Rebase replays commits onto a different base; conflicts or other changes in context can affect the result. The available DEV Community listing for “I wanted Git to show me what would happen before changing history” identifies its author and tags, but not the tool or its capabilities. So the practical answer here is about what a Git preview can and cannot establish—not about an unidentified project.
What changes when you rebase?
A rebase transplants a series of commits onto a different base. Git selects commits that are not equivalent to the upstream history, checks out the upstream, replays the selected commits, and moves the branch to the final resulting commit. The result is a rewritten sequence of commits, not simply the old commits moved unchanged. See the Git rebase manual for the operation’s documented behavior.
Interactive rebase also lets you reorder or combine commits. That makes the proposed sequence important: even if the same changes are involved, changing their order or combining them changes how the history is represented.
What does “preview” actually tell you?
A preview can mean different things: a proposed commit sequence, a graph showing where commits would sit, or a diff showing changes. These views can help you understand the planned rewrite, but they are not equivalent to replaying the commits and checking the resulting tree. In particular, a displayed plan or diff does not prove that replay will be conflict-free or that the final result will match your intent.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Sequence or graph: helps inspect which commits are involved and their proposed order.
- Diff: helps inspect changes, but does not by itself establish how each commit will apply to the new base.
- Executed rewrite: exposes actual replay behavior, including conflicts that may require resolution before Git can continue.
Because a rebase replays commits, a conflict can stop the operation. Git documents resolving conflicts and continuing, skipping a commit, or aborting the rebase; a preview alone cannot promise that none of these steps will be needed.
How can you check history before and after?
Before choosing a rebase workflow, inspect the commits and changes you intend to move, then compare the resulting history and tree after the operation. A commit listing, graph, or patch comparison answers a different question than whether the replay completed cleanly. If the consequences of a rewrite matter to collaborators, coordinate before changing shared history; a local preview does not establish what other people have fetched or based work on.

The available article listing does not identify what its author built, which operations it supports, or whether it executes a rewrite in isolation. It therefore cannot substantiate claims that the project previews a particular command, detects conflicts, preserves the original branch, or makes collaboration safe.

Git sets ORIG_HEAD when a rebase starts, but other commands can change that reference. The rebase manual points to the branch reflog as the way to find the prior branch tip. Treat that as recovery context, not a guarantee that every unwanted rewrite is automatically or trivially reversible. For Git’s broader explanation of rewriting history, see Pro Git: Rewriting History.
