Sometimes—but not universally. Microsoft documents specific security workflows that can evaluate certain password-protected attachments or inspect protected cloud files. That does not mean Windows Defender Antivirus decrypts every ZIP on your PC, or that Microsoft can silently open any encrypted archive.
What “look inside” means depends on where the ZIP is handled
Microsoft has several security products, and their documented actions differ: scanning archives on a Windows device, evaluating an email attachment after a recipient submits a password, checking protected files against known password patterns, or inspecting cloud files after an administrator grants consent. Those are distinct workflows, not one universal ability.
| Product or workflow | What Microsoft documents | Important limit or context |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Defender Antivirus | A policy allows scanning archive files such as ZIP and CAB. Archive scanning is on by default when the policy is enabled or not configured. Microsoft Defender Antivirus archive scanning | The policy page does not establish that Defender Antivirus decrypts every password-protected archive. |
| Defender for Office 365 Safe Attachments | A recipient can submit a password so a protected email attachment can be evaluated. Safe Attachments in Microsoft Defender for Office 365 | The documented workflow supports one password; it does not handle archive contents protected with different passwords. |
| Safe Attachments for SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams | During detonation, password-protected files are checked against known passwords or patterns often used by malicious actors. Safe Attachments for SharePoint, OneDrive, and Microsoft Teams | Microsoft says this service does not scan every file in those locations. |
| Defender for Cloud Apps DLP | Protected files can be inspected after one-time administrator consent. Microsoft documents a service principal permission to decrypt and inspect them. Inspect protected files with Defender for Cloud Apps | This is a configured cloud DLP workflow, not ordinary Windows archive scanning. |
| Defender SmartScreen | Checks the reputation of websites and downloaded files. Microsoft Defender SmartScreen | A reputation check is not the same as decrypting archive contents. |
Can Microsoft Defender scan a password-protected ZIP on your PC?
Microsoft documents an archive-scanning policy for Defender Antivirus that covers formats such as ZIP and CAB. However, the policy documentation does not say that local Defender Antivirus obtains passwords or decrypts every password-protected ZIP. “Scans archives” is therefore not enough evidence to conclude that it can read the contents of any encrypted archive.
The documented behavior also does not specify every archive format or encryption configuration. If your question is about a particular file on a Windows device, the answer depends on details the archive-scanning policy page does not establish; do not treat it as a guarantee that the file’s contents were inspected.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Can Microsoft 365 open a password-protected email attachment?
Defender for Office 365 Safe Attachments documents a workflow in which the recipient submits the attachment password for evaluation. This is not described as Microsoft silently extracting a password from the archive.
The workflow has a specific limit: it supports one password. If an archive contains items protected with different passwords, that workflow does not handle them. The distinction matters because “password-protected attachment” does not always mean one password unlocks everything inside.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Does Microsoft scan encrypted files in OneDrive, SharePoint, or Teams?
Safe Attachments checks some protected files against password patterns
For SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams, Microsoft documents a Safe Attachments detonation process that checks password-protected files against known passwords or patterns commonly used by malicious actors. This is a pattern check, not evidence that the service can decrypt every file or discover every user-created password. Microsoft also says that not every file in these locations is scanned.
Cloud DLP can inspect protected files after administrator consent
Defender for Cloud Apps DLP is a separate, configured capability. Microsoft says protected files can be inspected after an administrator provides one-time consent, and documents a service principal permission that allows decryption and inspection. This is materially different from routine antivirus archive scanning on a local PC.

Microsoft’s Defender for Cloud Apps documentation says file policies retire on January 6, 2027, and advises migration to Microsoft Purview DLP or auto-labeling policies. Because that date is approaching, administrators should check Microsoft’s current migration guidance and service status before relying on this workflow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What about SmartScreen?
Defender SmartScreen checks the reputation of websites and downloaded files. That can help identify risky sites or files, but Microsoft’s SmartScreen documentation is not evidence of a general system for decrypting password-protected ZIP contents.
