For Parallel ATA (PATA, often called IDE) drives, use the setting supported by your computer, drive, and cable. Choose Cable Select (CS) when the host and both drives support it and the cable is configured for it; choose manual master/slave when the hardware documentation calls for explicit jumper roles. Check the exact drive’s jumper diagram before changing anything: jumper positions are model-specific.
How the two settings assign drive roles
Cable Select
With Cable Select, each drive is set to CS, and the system uses the cable-select signal on pin 28 (CSEL) together with the drive’s position on the cable to determine its role. Seagate’s Barracuda 7200.10 PATA Product Manual, Rev. A, describes the host selecting or deselecting CSEL and the drives’ roles depending on cable position. Cable Select is an option only when the computer or host adapter supports it and the drive provides a documented CS setting.
Manual master/slave
With manual configuration, jumpers on each drive set its role rather than relying on cable position. If two devices share a PATA channel, the hardware documentation may specify one as master and the other as slave. The jumper locations and combinations vary by model, so a pin layout from one drive should not be assumed to apply to another.
Which should you choose?

If the system documentation recommends one method, follow it. Otherwise, Cable Select is a reasonable choice only when support is confirmed for the host, drives, and cable. Manual configuration is appropriate when the documentation calls for explicit roles or you need to set them directly. Neither method is universally preferable.

Check the cable and jumper diagram before changing settings
Use the label printed on the drive or its exact model’s manual to identify the jumper positions. For example, Seagate’s Barracuda 7200.10 PATA manual specifies pins 5 and 6 for Cable Select on the drive family it covers. That pin assignment is not a universal PATA convention.
The same manual specifies an 80-conductor, 40-pin cable for Ultra DMA modes 3–5 and identifies connectors for the motherboard, master drive, and slave drive. Those details apply to the drive family and modes covered by that manual. Check your own host and drive documentation for the required cable and connector arrangement.

Troubleshoot a drive that is not detected
- Identify the exact drive model. Read its printed jumper diagram or model-specific manual; do not infer pin positions from another drive.
- Verify host support. If using Cable Select, check the computer or host-adapter documentation to confirm it supports the setting.
- Check both devices and the cable. Confirm both drives use the intended configuration and that the host and device connectors are attached as their documentation specifies.
- For manual configuration, confirm each role. Set the devices to the documented master/single and slave configurations where appropriate for the hardware.
- Use special jumper settings only as documented. Seagate’s Barracuda 7200.10 manual reserves its “master with a non-ATA-compatible slave” setting for a specific fallback: use it only if the drive does not work as master with no jumpers installed. This is not a general first troubleshooting step.
