For a full webpage, use the browser’s own capture tool rather than a normal operating-system screenshot. Firefox and Microsoft Edge provide direct desktop shortcuts: Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux (or Command+Shift+S in Firefox on macOS). Chrome’s documented full-page workflow is in DevTools: open Device Mode, then choose More options > Capture a full size screenshot. A screen screenshot records only what is currently visible; a full-page capture includes content below the fold.

Choose the right kind of screenshot

There are three common results:

  • Visible-area screenshot: records the current viewport.
  • Selected-area screenshot: records a rectangle or highlighted page element.
  • Full-page screenshot: captures the webpage from top to bottom, including content you would normally have to scroll to see.

Use a full-page command when you need an article, dashboard, documentation page or landing page in one image. An operating-system shortcut such as Print Screen, Windows+Shift+S or Shift+Command+4 generally represents only the screen area currently displayed.

Firefox: the quickest full-page shortcut

Windows and Linux

  1. Open the page in Firefox.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+S.
  3. Choose Save full page for the entire document, or Save visible for the current viewport.
  4. Download the image or copy it to the clipboard.

macOS

  1. Open the webpage in Firefox.
  2. Press Command+Shift+S.
  3. Select Save full page or Save visible.
  4. Save the image or use the copy-to-clipboard option.

You can also right-click the page and choose Take Screenshot. Firefox’s interface can capture a selected region or an element highlighted while you move the pointer. Mozilla documents keyboard movement and resizing for the selection interface; crosshair movement does not work on Wayland. See Mozilla’s screenshot instructions for the current controls.

Microsoft Edge: full-page capture with Ctrl+Shift+S

  1. Open the webpage in Edge.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+S, or right-click the page and choose Screenshot. You can also open Screenshot from Edge Settings.
  3. Choose Capture full page to include content below the viewport, or select an area.
  4. Use the overlay to mark up the result, copy it, or save it.

Microsoft describes this as capturing an entire webpage “even the parts you’d have to scroll to see.” Availability and exact behavior can vary by device, market and Edge version, so use the menu route if the shortcut is unavailable. Details are in Microsoft Edge’s screenshot documentation.

Chrome: use DevTools for a full-page image

Capture the whole page

  1. Open the page in Google Chrome.
  2. Open DevTools with F12, Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows/Linux, or Command+Option+I on macOS.
  3. Turn on the device toolbar by clicking the phone/tablet icon, or press Ctrl+Shift+M (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+M (macOS).
  4. Open the device-toolbar More options menu.
  5. Choose Capture a full size screenshot.

Capture only the viewport

Follow the same steps but choose Capture screenshot. That command captures the current emulated viewport, not the page content below it. Chrome’s official documentation presents these as menu commands rather than a dedicated global screenshot shortcut; labels may change as DevTools evolves. The cited Chrome for Developers page was updated 2024-02-20 UTC: Device Mode screenshot controls.

Firefox DevTools for delayed, scripted or element captures

Firefox offers extra control when the simple shortcut is not enough. To expose a screenshot button, open DevTools, select Settings, and under Available Toolbox Buttons enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.

In the Web Console, Firefox’s :screenshot helper supports options including:

  • --fullpage to capture the complete page;
  • a delay before capture, useful for animations or late-loading content;
  • a device-pixel ratio;
  • a custom filename;
  • clipboard output; and
  • a CSS selector to capture one element.

For example, after opening the Web Console, a command such as :screenshot --fullpage --delay 3 page.png waits three seconds and saves a full-page image. Use a selector when you need one component rather than the document. Command syntax can vary with Firefox releases, so check the console’s built-in help if an option is rejected.

Browser shortcut comparison

Browser Direct shortcut Full-page route Visible or selected capture Output options
Firefox desktop Ctrl+Shift+S (Windows/Linux); Command+Shift+S (macOS) Screenshot tool > Save full page Save visible, selected region or highlighted element Save image or copy to clipboard
Microsoft Edge Ctrl+Shift+S Screenshot > Capture full page Select an area Markup, copy or save
Google Chrome No documented global shortcut DevTools Device Mode > More options > Capture a full size screenshot Capture screenshot for the viewport DevTools saves the image

Firefox is the shortest path when you want an immediate full-page or visible capture. Edge combines full-page capture with an annotation overlay. Chrome keeps the workflow in developer tools and is useful when you already need device emulation.

How to capture pages that change after loading

Wait for lazy content

Some pages load images, charts or text only after scrolling. A browser capture can therefore include placeholders if the page has not finished rendering. Wait until the page settles, scroll through it once to trigger lazy loading, then capture again.

Handle sticky headers and repeated content

Fixed navigation bars may appear repeatedly in a stitched image. If that makes the result unreadable, use Firefox’s element or selector workflow, temporarily hide the fixed element with a style rule, or capture separate sections.

Respect privacy and access controls

Do not capture passwords, private customer data or pages you are not authorized to access. A screenshot preserves whatever is visible, including personal information and tokens displayed in a URL or interface.

Troubleshooting

The shortcut does nothing

  • Confirm the browser window has focus, not another application.
  • Use the browser menu: Firefox’s page context menu has Take Screenshot; Edge has Screenshot.
  • On managed computers, a policy or another application may reserve the key combination.
  • In Chrome, skip shortcut hunting and use DevTools Device Mode.

There is no full-page option

Update the browser if your installation is unusually old, then reopen the capture UI. Edge notes that availability varies by device, market and version. In Chrome, make sure the device toolbar is enabled; the full-size command is inside its More options menu.

The image is blank or cut off

  • Wait for network requests, fonts and images to finish.
  • Disable a page overlay such as a cookie dialog if it blocks the document.
  • For very long pages, capture sections or use a developer-oriented tool with an explicit wait and full-page setting.
  • Check the downloaded file format and open it in an image viewer rather than a text editor.

Text looks tiny or blurry

A full-page image can be extremely tall. Increase the browser zoom before capturing, use a higher device-pixel ratio in Firefox DevTools, or capture smaller sections. Remember that enlarging a low-resolution image later cannot recreate detail.

Keyboard selection is difficult

Firefox’s screenshot selection UI supports arrow-key movement and resizing. On Wayland, Mozilla notes that crosshair movement is not available, so use the browser’s element or full-page choices instead.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need repeatable captures in a script, build pipeline or AI workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or a PDF. Its cleaning step accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled.

Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. The MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
