To take a full-page screenshot in Chrome, you may not need an extension: Chrome DevTools includes a “Capture a full size screenshot” command. Use DevTools for an occasional capture without installing anything; consider an extension when repeat capture, image or PDF downloads, or editing and annotation are important. No cited comparison establishes a universal winner for speed or accuracy, so the right choice depends on the page, output, permissions, and current maintenance.
How to take a full-page screenshot in Chrome with DevTools
Chrome’s built-in route is a practical no-install baseline. Open the page, open DevTools, switch to device mode, and use the Command Menu to capture the full page.
- Open the page you want to capture in Chrome.
- Open DevTools using Chrome’s menu or keyboard shortcut.
- Turn on device mode in DevTools.
- Open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+P on Mac.
- Type “Capture full size screenshot” and select the matching command. Chrome describes this as capturing the whole page, including content outside the visible viewport.
See Chrome’s Command Menu documentation and device mode documentation. Exact labels can change as Chrome evolves. DevTools also offers an area screenshot from the Command Menu; Chrome notes that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked.
When DevTools is a good fit
- You need a full-page image now and do not want to install an extension.
- You are comfortable opening developer tools and can confirm the result visually.
- You do not need a built-in annotation or export workflow beyond the capture itself.
Which Chrome screenshot extension should you choose?
For a quick comparison, GoFullPage is the better-supported choice in the cited current evidence for whole-page capture and image or PDF download. FireShot’s cited feature details come from a 2016 manual, so treat them as historical rather than confirmation of what its current listing or version offers. Neither source supports a claim that one tool always captures pages more accurately or quickly.

| Chrome DevTools | Full-size screenshot in device mode; area screenshot via Command Menu | No extension installation for a basic capture | Area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked, according to Chrome documentation |
| GoFullPage | Chrome Web Store listing describes whole-page capture and image or PDF downloads | Repeat captures and straightforward downloads | Publisher says custom scrolling, PDFs, and some frame behavior can limit capture; check permissions and current listing |
| FireShot | Its 2016 manual describes visible-area, selected-area, entire-page, and browser-window capture, plus editing and several export routes | Potential editing and output workflow, if confirmed in the current product | The manual is old; current features, free/Pro boundary, price, and support are not established by that source |
GoFullPage: whole-page capture and downloads
The GoFullPage Chrome Web Store listing describes capturing an entire page and downloading it as an image or PDF. Its publisher says the extension captures successive portions of a page and describes support for complex pages, inner scrollable elements, and embedded iframes. These are publisher statements, not independently verified compatibility results.
A retrieved Chrome Web Store snapshot from 2026 showed 11,000,000 users and a 4.9 out of 5 rating from 84.2K ratings. Those numbers are a dated, volatile store snapshot—not evidence of screenshot quality. The store listing says ratings update daily and may not reflect the newest reviews. The listing’s changelog showed version 8.9 dated September 24, 2026, with a Chromium 153 URL requirement fix and improved dialogs. Check the current Chrome Web Store listing for availability and release details.
Where it may struggle
GoFullPage’s FAQ says it cannot access a PDF document to scroll and capture it in the described way, and that sites using custom JavaScript to control scrolling may pose a problem. Pages with nested scrolling, frames, fixed headers, or content that loads only as you scroll deserve a visual check after capture; compatibility is not guaranteed for every site.

Permissions and local data claims
The publisher says basic use needs no special permissions, while download controls may request Downloads permission and scrolling iframe or frame content may request iframe access. It also says screenshot data is held in browser HTML5 filesystem or IndexedDB storage on the user’s computer, not on its servers. These are the publisher’s claims, not an independent privacy audit. Review the actual permission prompt and current listing before installing. See the GoFullPage FAQ.

FireShot’s publisher manual, marked © 2016, describes visible-area, selected-area, entire-page, and browser-window capture. It also documents an editor, annotations, and saving to PDF, PNG, GIF, JPEG, or BMP, as well as clipboard, printing, email, and external-editor options. Because that manual is old, do not assume these formats, features, support status, or free-versus-Pro boundaries are current. Confirm them in a current publisher or store listing before choosing FireShot for a specific workflow. The cited manual is available as a FireShot Pro manual.

Match the capture target to the job
Decide whether you need the full page, only the visible viewport, a selected area, or a specific element. DevTools’ documented full-size and area commands cover two of those needs; GoFullPage’s listing focuses on whole-page capture. The cited FireShot manual lists several capture targets, but its age makes current availability uncertain.

Expect edge cases on dynamic pages
A page can behave differently from a simple document when it has an inner scroll region, iframe, custom scrolling logic, fixed header, or a feed that loads more content as you move down. The GoFullPage FAQ specifically identifies some of these limits. Inspect the final image for missing sections, repeated or misplaced elements, and content that did not load; no cited source supplies a cross-tool success rate or benchmark.
Choose output and editing before installing
If the deliverable must be a PDF, an image format, an annotated image, or a clipboard or print handoff, confirm that the current extension version supports that exact route. The current GoFullPage listing describes image and PDF downloads. FireShot’s broader format and editing details come from its 2016 manual and should be verified before relying on them.

Chrome explains that website-data access can let an extension read, request, or modify page data; optional permissions may be requested only when needed. Permission names and prompts can vary by extension and version, so inspect the live prompt rather than relying on a feature summary. Troubleshooting full-page captures
The DevTools command is missing
Make sure DevTools is open and device mode is enabled, then reopen the Command Menu and search for “Capture full size screenshot.” If labels differ, consult Chrome’s current device mode guide.

The screenshot omits content or shows gaps
The page may load content only after scrolling, or it may use nested scrolling, an iframe, or custom JavaScript scroll behavior. Try the page’s own scroll area and inspect whether the missing content appears before capture. GoFullPage’s publisher identifies custom scroll logic and PDF documents as limitations; no method cited here guarantees success on every page.
An extension requests a permission
Check what the permission enables in the current Chrome prompt and listing. GoFullPage’s publisher says download and frame-related permissions may be requested for those workflows; deny permissions you do not need, understanding that the related function may then be unavailable.
The result is not the format or layout you need
Check the current tool’s export options before capturing again. For FireShot in particular, the available cited details are from 2016, so confirm current format support and editing options rather than assuming the manual still describes the installed version.
