Outer hard-drive tracks generally deliver higher sequential transfer rates than inner tracks. The platter spins at the same angular speed across its surface, but outer tracks have a larger circumference; zoned recording also lets them hold more data per revolution. This is a tendency, not a guarantee for every drive or workload.
Why outer tracks can transfer data faster
Hard-drive tracks are concentric circles on a platter. An outer track is farther from the spindle and has a larger circumference than an inner track. Because a platter normally rotates at constant angular velocity, the surface at a larger radius moves faster beneath the read/write head.
Drives also use zoned bit recording: neighboring tracks are grouped into annular zones, and outer zones can store more sectors per track than inner zones. As the platter turns, more data can pass beneath the head in one revolution in an outer zone. Together, the higher surface speed and greater data per track support higher sequential transfer rates toward the platter’s outer edge. See the CRC Press/Taylor & Francis explanation of zoned bit recording and Virginia Tech OpenDSA’s overview of hard-drive geometry and zoning.
What “faster” means—and what it does not
The comparison is mainly about sequential transfer throughput: reading or writing data in a continuous stream. Outer zones generally have an advantage, but the size of that advantage depends on the drive’s design and recording layout. It does not mean every operation involving an outer track is faster.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Seek time: The time spent moving the head to a track is a separate factor from how quickly data streams once the head is there.
- Random I/O: Small, scattered reads and writes involve positioning and workload effects, so the outer-track sequential advantage does not predict their performance by itself.
- Other bottlenecks: Interface limits, caching, workload, and operating-system placement of logical blocks can also affect observed speed.
A 1997 USENIX paper reported outer-zone transfer rates 1.45–1.9 times inner-zone rates in its historical sample. That is an old measurement, not a specification or reliable ratio for current hard drives. Read the USENIX paper.
Can you choose whether a file goes on an inner or outer track?
Ordinary file-management settings do not provide a dependable way to choose a file’s physical platter track. Users and filesystems generally work with logical blocks; the relationship between those blocks and a drive’s physical recording locations is not a normal consumer control. Do not assume that moving a file to a particular folder, partition, or part of a disk will reliably place it on an outer track.
