For U.S. data scientist roles, a relevant bachelor’s degree is the safer default credential if you do not already have comparable education or quantitative experience. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says data scientists typically need at least a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related field. Courses can help you build or update specific skills, but the available evidence does not show that a short course generally substitutes for a degree.
The right choice depends on your starting point, target role, local hiring market, and the actual cost and quality of the program. The evidence discussed here concerns U.S. data scientists; it does not establish the same requirements for data analysts, machine learning engineers, or jobs in other countries.
What do employers typically expect for data scientist roles?
The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook states: “Data scientists typically need at least a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related field to enter the occupation.” It also notes that students need extensive study in mathematics and statistics. This describes typical entry education, not an absolute rule followed by every employer.
That distinction matters when weighing a credential. A degree can provide a recognizable, broad signal of formal preparation, while a course is usually narrower. A course certificate may show completion or focused study, but it does not by itself establish equivalent depth in mathematics, statistics, computing, or applied work.

Requirements vary by employer and role. Before choosing a program, check current job listings for the specific positions and organizations you want. Look for stated degree requirements, acceptable fields of study, required experience, and the technical skills employers repeatedly request.
What does a degree offer that a course may not?
Sequenced foundations
A well-designed degree program can arrange mathematics, statistics, computing, and applied work into a progression. That structure can be useful if you are starting without a quantitative background and need to identify and address foundational gaps. Program quality varies, so examine the curriculum rather than assuming every degree provides the same preparation.
Formal credential and broader access
A degree is a formal qualification that may satisfy screening requirements where an employer asks for one. Depending on the institution and program, it may also provide access to advising, peers, internships, and employer networks. These opportunities are not guaranteed; check whether the specific program offers them and whether students in your situation can use them.

Time and total cost
A degree usually requires a longer commitment than a short course. Compare tuition with the full cost: fees, materials, financing, and earnings you may forgo while studying. A lower tuition figure does not necessarily mean a lower overall cost if the program takes substantially longer or requires reducing paid work.

Filling a specific skills gap
If you already have a relevant degree, work experience, or strong quantitative preparation, a focused course may be a proportionate way to learn a particular tool or topic. That is a practical decision, not a result proven by a direct study comparing course takers with degree holders.
Testing interest or learning a defined topic
A course can let you explore data science or study a bounded subject before committing to a longer program. Check what you will actually learn, how much practice is included, and whether the course evaluates your work. A certificate for attendance or completion is a different signal from assessed projects that demonstrate what you can do.

Showing applied ability
Projects can help demonstrate how you apply skills to a relevant problem. Their value depends on the quality of the work, the clarity of your explanation, and its connection to the roles you want. A portfolio may complement formal education, but this evidence does not show that a portfolio universally replaces a degree requirement.
What does the evidence say about earnings and job outcomes?
Occupation-wide statistics provide context, not a degree-versus-course return. The BLS reported a median annual wage of $120,230 for U.S. data scientists in May 2025 and projected 35% employment growth from 2025 to 2035, with 24,800 average annual openings over that period. These figures describe the occupation overall; they are not a salary premium for degree holders, a course-completion outcome, or a promise about an individual’s pay.

In 2025, U.S. full-time wage and salary workers age 25 and over with a bachelor’s degree had median usual weekly earnings of $1,578 and an unemployment rate of 2.8%. Those with some college and no degree had median weekly earnings of $1,062 and an unemployment rate of 3.8%. A randomized study by Susan Athey and Emil Palikot examined encouraging Coursera learners to share certificates. In the analyzed LinkedIn subset—about 40,000 learners who supplied profile links, mainly from developing countries and without college degrees—the intervention group was 6% more likely to report new employment within a year and 9% more likely to report certificate-related employment. These are relative increases reported by the study, not percentage-point changes or universal placement rates. The experiment tested certificate visibility, not assignment to a degree versus a course, course quality, or data science job outcomes.
For institution- and major-specific graduate outcomes, the U.S. Census Bureau’s experimental Post-Secondary Employment Outcomes data provide earnings and employment information by degree level, major, and institution for participating schools. Coverage depends on institutions sharing transcript data, and the product does not provide a universal comparison between degrees and short courses.

- Fit with your target jobs: Does the curriculum match the skills and education named in current listings for your intended role?
- Depth and sequence: How much mathematics, statistics, computing, and applied practice does it cover, and in what order?
- Assessment: Are assignments and projects evaluated, or does the credential record only attendance or completion?
- Evidence of outcomes: If a provider reports placement or earnings, what population, timeframe, and definition does the figure use? Ask for audited outcomes where available, and do not treat an unverified placement claim as a guarantee.
- Full cost and time: Add tuition, fees, materials, financing, and foregone earnings; compare those costs with the time required to finish.
- Support and access: Verify whether you will have advising, peers, internships, or employer connections, and whether access is included in the program.
- Your starting point: A learner with a relevant degree and experience may need targeted study, while someone without quantitative preparation may benefit more from a structured foundation.
How can you check whether a degree’s outcomes justify its cost?
Use the Census Bureau’s experimental Post-Secondary Employment Outcomes (PSEO) data to explore employment and earnings by degree level, major, and institution where participating-school data are available. Treat the results as one input: coverage is limited to schools with data-sharing agreements, and graduate outcomes do not isolate the causal value of the degree.
For typical occupation requirements and national outlook figures, consult the BLS Data Scientists profile. For broad education-group earnings and unemployment, the BLS explains its measures in Education pays, 2025; those averages are not a substitute for program-level or data-science-specific outcomes.
Quick Recap
Which option makes sense for your situation?
- You lack a relevant degree and quantitative preparation: A relevant bachelor’s degree is the safer default for a U.S. data scientist target, given the BLS’s typical entry-education guidance. Compare the program’s curriculum and total cost before enrolling.
- You have a relevant degree or substantial experience: A targeted course may be a more proportionate way to close a defined skill gap. Choose one with meaningful practice and assessment if you need evidence of applied ability.
- You are unsure whether the field suits you: A focused course can help you test interest before making a larger time and financial commitment. Treat it as exploration, not proof that you have met every employer’s requirements.
- You are deciding based on advertised ROI: Ask for program-specific costs and outcomes with clear definitions and timeframes. The available evidence does not provide a matched, tuition-adjusted causal comparison of data science degrees and short courses.
