Choose ArchiveBox to preserve web pages in multiple formats; choose Wallabag to save articles for a cleaner reading queue. Both can be self-hosted, but they serve different purposes: ArchiveBox aims to retain a record of web content, while Wallabag extracts article content for reading later. Wallabag also offers a hosted option for people who would rather not manage a server.

How their capture approaches differ
ArchiveBox preserves more than a reading view
ArchiveBox describes itself as self-hosted web archiving software. Its documented capture options include original or single-file HTML, screenshots, PDFs, WARC, extracted article text, headers, and media or source content. It also exposes outputs such as HTML, PDF, PNG, TXT, JSON, WARC and SQLite. That makes it the more suitable starting point when the goal is to keep a record of a page in forms that may be useful beyond a reading interface.
ArchiveBox accepts imports from multiple sources, including bookmarks, browser history and feeds, and supports scheduled imports. The exact capture result can vary by site; product documentation describes capabilities, not a guarantee that every page or embedded asset will archive successfully.
Wallabag prioritizes readable article content
Wallabag’s documentation describes a different goal: saving a web page by keeping its content while removing elements such as navigation and ads. That produces a cleaner reading item rather than a full-fidelity copy of the original site. Its workflow is oriented around reading later, including browser and mobile apps, RSS and e-reader use.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A simplified reading copy should not be treated as equivalent to a preservation archive. If retaining the page’s structure, screenshots, or other capture formats matters, ArchiveBox’s documented approach is closer to that need.

Wallabag is the more direct fit when saved items are primarily articles to read later. Its app and e-reader workflows support taking saved reading beyond a desktop browser. Its integrations include browser extensions, RSS and an API; check Wallabag’s current documentation for the specific client or platform you plan to use.

Choose ArchiveBox for a collection to preserve
ArchiveBox can ingest links from several sources and run scheduled imports, which is useful when building a broader archive rather than manually saving each article to a queue. Its emphasis on multiple output formats also helps when you want files that are not limited to a single reading application.
Think about export before you commit
ArchiveBox emphasizes standard files and multiple formats. wallabag.it says users can export their data at any time, with formats including PDF, ePUB and mobi. Export options do not make the products interchangeable: the captured content and intended use remain different.

Self-hosting or hosted Wallabag
Self-hosting either product
Both ArchiveBox and Wallabag offer self-hosted software. That means you take responsibility for setting up and maintaining the service. ArchiveBox’s project site recommends a Docker Compose installation; consult its current installation instructions for platform and setup requirements. Wallabag’s self-hosting page identifies version 2.6.14 as the latest release observed in the documentation reviewed for this comparison, but versions can change.
Using wallabag.it instead
For readers who want Wallabag without maintaining a server, wallabag.it is its documented hosted service. Its pricing page in 2026 lists a 14-day free trial, €4 for three months, €11 for one year, and a €30 annual support subscription. These are the service’s listed commercial terms, not independent performance figures; check the pricing page before subscribing because prices can change.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose ArchiveBox if you need to retain website material in several formats, collect links from multiple sources, or schedule imports.
- Choose Wallabag if your main job is to save articles, strip away page clutter and read them later through supported app or e-reader workflows.
- Consider using both if you want a convenient reading queue and a separate preservation archive. Treat them as separate workflows, not as substitutes with identical capture behavior.
This comparison reflects the products’ official documentation and descriptions, not hands-on testing or a comparative benchmark. Test your own sites and collection workflow before relying on either for material that must be preserved.
