You cannot expand an existing AMD SB750 RAID 1 mirror by simply selecting a third drive in RAIDXpert. SB750 RAID 1 is a two-drive mirror; adding a disk for more capacity requires a different storage plan. If a member failed, the correct operation is replacement and rebuild, using the instructions for your exact motherboard.
What “add a drive” means on SB750
There are three different objectives that are often described as adding a drive:

Why a third disk does not enlarge this RAID 1
The AMD SB6xx/SB7xx controller manual states: “RAID 1 logical drives on the AMD SB6xx/SB7xx Controller consist of two physical drives.” RAID 1 usable capacity is the capacity of the smaller member. AMD’s example of two 100 GB drives provides 100 GB usable, not 200 GB.
The AMD RAIDXpert User Manual v2.1 documents same-level drive-count expansion for RAID 0, RAID 5 and JBOD, but does not document adding a member to RAID 1 while retaining RAID 1. Its migration table lists a two-drive RAID 1 as a source for changing to other RAID levels; that is not an instruction to create a three-drive RAID 1.

Do not transfer online capacity-expansion guidance from the later RAIDXpert2 product to the legacy SB750 RAIDXpert software. They are different RAID generations.
If a RAID 1 member has failed
A failed-member replacement is a rebuild operation, not an expansion. A Gigabyte motherboard manual for SB750-era hardware instructs users to replace the failed disk with one of equal or greater capacity and rebuild the RAID 1 array with the AMD RAID utility. Exact labels and screens differ by motherboard, firmware and driver package.

Safe replacement checklist
- Identify the actual failed member from the controller status and the motherboard documentation.
- Make a verified independent backup before changing membership or starting a rebuild.
- Use a replacement disk whose capacity is at least as large as the failed member, as required by the cited board procedure.
- Follow the exact replacement and rebuild workflow in your motherboard manual or its supported AMD RAID utility.
- Allow the rebuild to complete and confirm that the array returns to a healthy state.
If the array is Critical or Offline, do not delete the logical drive as a troubleshooting shortcut. First determine whether the problem is a disk, cable, port, controller setting or driver issue, and follow the board-specific recovery procedure.
If you want more usable capacity
The documented SB750 materials do not establish a supported way to add a third disk and grow the same RAID 1 set. Rebuilding a mirror also does not, by itself, enlarge its logical-drive capacity.

Plan a different two-disk upgrade
Replacing both members with larger disks may be possible on some systems, but the retrieved manuals do not establish a universal sequence or guarantee that space beyond the original logical-drive size will automatically become usable. Check the exact motherboard manual, RAID utility version and controller behavior before planning a staged replacement. Keep a separate, tested backup throughout the process.
Add independent storage
An additional disk can be configured separately if your board, available SATA ports and operating system support the intended arrangement. It will not be protected by the existing RAID 1 mirror unless you create a separately supported array, and the cited manuals do not verify the hardware layout of an unspecified computer.

What not to do in RAIDXpert
- Do not assume an unused SATA port can be added to the current RAID 1 logical drive.
- Do not select a third disk in Migration expecting RAID 1 to gain capacity.
- Do not delete and recreate the logical drive before you have a verified backup; the SB750 manual warns that deleting a logical drive deletes its data.
- Do not run secure erase unless you intentionally want permanent data deletion.
- Do not apply RAIDXpert2 instructions to an SB750 RAIDXpert installation.
Information needed for click-by-click advice
There is no universal SB750 interface sequence for every motherboard. Before following detailed directions, record:
- Exact motherboard model and BIOS version
- Current array state (Healthy, Critical, Offline or another status)
- RAIDXpert or AMD RAID driver/software version
- Which physical disk is reported failed, including its capacity
- Operating system and whether important data has been backed up independently
With those details, consult the original motherboard manufacturer’s manual for the supported replacement, rebuild or migration path. A manual for one Gigabyte board should not be treated as a universal specification for every SB750 board.

Can SB750 RAID 1 use three drives for extra capacity?
