Kedro is an open-source Python framework for building reproducible, maintainable, modular data science and data engineering pipelines. It gives projects a consistent structure and makes data flow explicit through three core concepts: nodes, pipelines, and the Data Catalog. Kedro helps organize pipeline code; it is not, by itself, a hosted production service. Deployment depends on the compute, orchestration, and storage tools chosen for the project.

What Kedro is used for

Kedro is intended for Python practitioners who want to turn data-processing and modeling code into a structured project they can inspect, test, and run consistently. The project describes it as “a toolbox for production-ready data engineering and data science pipelines.” That describes the framework’s purpose, not a guarantee that a Kedro project is production-ready without suitable testing, infrastructure, and operational practices.

Kedro starts from a modifiable project template and encourages conventions such as pytest, Sphinx documentation, linting, and standard Python logging. These practices can make a project easier to maintain, but teams still need to apply them and decide what quality checks their work requires. The project overview also describes connectors for local and network filesystems, cloud object stores, and HDFS, as well as file-based data and model versioning.

The three core Kedro concepts

Nodes: make function inputs and outputs explicit

A node wraps a Python function and declares the inputs it consumes and the outputs it produces. The function can remain ordinary Python code; the node definition adds a clear contract for how that code fits into the pipeline. This separation helps keep business logic readable while making data dependencies visible to Kedro.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Pipelines: connect work by dependency

A pipeline is a collection of nodes. Kedro uses their input and output relationships to determine dependencies and execution order, creating a graph of work that can be run and inspected. Rather than relying on a long script’s implied sequence, the project describes how each step relates to the data produced by other steps.

Data Catalog: register datasets and their storage

The Data Catalog registers project data sources and connects pipeline code to dataset types and storage locations. That lets pipeline nodes refer to logical datasets rather than embedding every file format and path directly in processing code. A dataset’s configuration can vary between environments while the function that uses it remains the same. The available connectors and their configuration details depend on the current Kedro version and project setup; use the official documentation for the connector you plan to use.

How to get started with Kedro

The official learning route combines the documentation with the hands-on Spaceflights tutorial. The tutorial is designed to take you from creating a project through registering data and building processing and data science pipelines, then testing and packaging the project. The official introduction says prior Python experience makes the learning curve easier. Because Python requirements can change between Kedro releases, check the current installation documentation rather than relying on an older version-specific minimum.

  1. Start at the Kedro documentation. Follow its current installation and project-creation guidance so commands and prerequisites match the version you intend to use.
  2. Learn the concepts, then work through the Spaceflights tutorial. Pay attention to how functions become nodes, how dependencies form pipelines, and how datasets are registered in the catalog.
  3. Use the tutorial’s project as a map, not a requirement to copy its design. Adapt the structure to your own data sources, transformations, testing needs, and team conventions.
  4. Consult the API references and Kedro-Viz guidance when you need version-specific details. The documentation landing page links to current user guidance; the Kedro Academy repository is an additional source of team-curated learning material.

What Kedro-Viz adds

Kedro-Viz is an interactive aid for exploring Kedro projects and pipeline graphs. Its documentation describes filtering and search, focus mode for modular pipelines, metadata panels, Plotly chart support, and autoreload. These features help developers inspect pipeline structure and related information; they do not replace the code, data infrastructure, or runtime that executes the workload. Check the current Kedro-Viz documentation for feature availability and setup details, since capabilities can vary by version.

A separate distinction matters when discussing hosting: the Kedro-Viz repository documents deploying a visualization build to cloud static hosting. That is hosting the visualization artifact, not deploying the pipeline workload itself.

How Kedro pipeline deployment works

Kedro provides structure for defining pipeline work, while deployment depends on how and where that work should run. The project overview names single-machine and distributed deployment strategies and lists integrations or options including Argo, Prefect, Kubeflow, AWS Batch, and Databricks. They are not all built-in equivalents, nor does every project need one. Confirm the current integration documentation, platform requirements, and version compatibility before choosing an implementation.

Decision What to establish
Compute environment Whether the workload should run on an existing machine or platform, and what that environment supports.
Execution scale Whether local or single-machine execution is enough, or the workload needs distributed execution.
Orchestration Whether the team needs scheduling, retries, dependency management across jobs, or another orchestration capability.
Storage and datasets Which storage systems and dataset connectors the pipeline must use, and whether their configuration works in each environment.
Operational ownership Who is responsible for deployment, monitoring, credentials, failures, and maintenance of the runtime and surrounding services.
Compatibility Whether the chosen Kedro version, integration, and target platform are supported together.

Choose an integration only after matching it to those needs and the infrastructure your team operates. Kedro organizes the pipeline; the selected platform and deployment strategy provide the execution environment and operational capabilities.

Is Kedro a good fit?

Kedro is worth considering when a Python project has multiple data-processing or modeling steps, needs clearer data dependencies, or would benefit from consistent project conventions. Its abstractions are most useful when the team wants to separate function logic from data configuration and to inspect work as a connected pipeline.

For a small, one-off script, introducing a framework may add structure the task does not need. Kedro also does not remove the need to understand Python, choose suitable storage and compute, write tests, or operate deployed workloads. The decision is whether the benefits of explicit structure and reusable conventions outweigh the setup and learning required for your project.
